Chapter 160 - 4 Middle-aged Man
Chapter 160: Chapter 4 Middle-aged Man
Although there’s a saying that scholars can argue black is white, Lin Xiaoguai had never mastered this skill in either of her lifetimes, even when working in a magazine where others engaged in verbal sparring, she mostly used real strength to make her point.
Actually, she should be grateful she was born in the sixties rather than the eighties. Society in the 21st century isn’t as simple as it was then. Even with real skill, if you can’t deftly manage relationships above and below you, don’t even mention promotion; one might encounter numerous vexing issues. Sometimes, even the slickest individuals, if lacking the right background and relationships, had to suffer and compromise, let alone the former.
Lin Xiaoguai wasn’t good at arguing with people, largely because her character was too upright. But even the most upright person, as a mother seeing her son endure such grievous wrong, couldn’t remain rational.
That being said, she blurted out a sentence that was quite "unreasonable".
No need to mention Shen Chi, even Lin Xiaoguai herself was startled.
The man opposite blinked in surprise and then angrily said, "I was sincerely apologizing, don’t push your luck!"
"Pushing our luck?" Lin Xiaoguai laughed furiously, "Listen to this, it’s a real-life instance of the pot calling the kettle black."
By this time, there were already quite a few onlookers who laughed upon hearing this.
"What happened here, who scratched Little Niangao’s face?" At this moment, Mr. Jiang and Mrs. Jiang both came out, and Mrs. Jiang exclaimed in alarm upon seeing Little Niangao’s face.
Over there, the man’s face showed impatience as he pulled out a stack of banknotes, "This is my sincerity, I hope you stop pestering me."
With that, he handed the stack of money towards Shen Chi, thinking it was useless to talk to Lin Xiaoguai and figuring that the man of the house had always been calmer and might be easier to communicate with.
Was that really the case?
Shen Chi was furious to see his son’s face scratched in front of him, but even when angry he was too reserved, which made people misunderstand.
"No need," Shen Chi said with a slight grin, "I think you need this money more than I do."
"Ah?" The man was perplexed, not sure whether to offer the money or take it back.
Accompanied by the phrase "Injuries naturally require medical fees!" Shen Chi suddenly punched the man in the face.
He hit hard, and the man staggered back several steps, failing to hold onto his daughter; the little girl fell to the ground and started crying loudly. The man’s face swelled visibly, and he couldn’t even tend to his daughter as he clutched his face, incredulous, "You dare hit me!?"
"What about it?" Shen Chi smirked, "You can bully my son, can’t I punch you once?"
Shen Chi, deep down a military man accustomed to resolving issues with fists after spending a long time in the army, usually held principles—or rather, pride—typically refraining from striking women and children. Today, however, if this man had been more respectful, genuinely apologetic, Shen Chi might not have hit him, but what was this man’s character like?
Apologizing with smooth words, yet his gaze carried an air of casual indifference, clearly not taking the day’s events seriously, thinking everything could be solved with money.
In his view, beating him up was letting him off lightly.
Just like the police who are always the last to arrive on the scene, train conductors also appeared last.
"What’s going on here?" Unlike later generations, attendants at this time usually got their jobs through connections, and their attitude was worlds apart.
The beaten man was the first to point at Shen Chi and complain to the conductor, "Comrade, he hit me!"
Shen Chi nearly laughed, exposing Little Niangao’s injured face, and said to the conductor, "Comrade, look at this child’s face. He, an adult, isn’t even embarrassed, still trying to solve things with money. How can I not be angry?"
His composure contrasted sharply with the other man’s frantic demeanor.
Yet... the onlookers were somewhat silent, knowing falsities weren’t usually so overt. Those unaware might even think the adult was the one who hit the child.
Someone wanted to speak up, but a glance from Shen Chi made them too frightened to move.
Damn, this guy is terrifying; no wonder the previous brash girl hid in the man’s arms.
The conductor indeed misunderstood, especially when he saw money scattered all over the ground; he looked at the man with utter disdain, "Bullying a child, he deserves to be hit by the child’s parents. Alright now, everyone go back to your carriages, the train is about to leave!"
