Chapter 132: Chapter 37: Sibling Affection
Lin Xiaofu was defiant for once. Not to mention the shock of the Lin Clan present, Zhu Fen was the most vehement in her reaction.
"Lin Xiaofu, what are you talking about?" Without caring about her fear, Zhu Fen’s eyes bulged with rage as she shouted, "Why should my own daughter be raised by someone else?"
In her heart, she thought that her eldest daughter was now irrevocably lost, and given that headstrong girl’s temperament, she’d likely never give her mother the chance to sell her for a betrothal gift. Zhu Fen was determined not to let her remaining two daughters escape her clutches.
Lin Xiaofu hung his head in silence, not uttering a word, yet his silence spoke volumes of his resolute decision.
"You speak so righteously, but when, aside from these two years, have you ever cared for a daughter?" Zhou Fengqin couldn’t stand this niece-in-law, "I’ve never seen such a heartless mother, treating her daughter like an enemy. No wonder you have no sons to this day; it’s clear you’ve accrued too much bad karma!"
Zhu Fen’s face twitched with anger, her expression turning fierce. "What did you say, old hag?"
The Lin Clan members around frowned. Lin Nianqiang stood with his eyebrows raised, saying, "See that? This is truly how my younger brother’s daughter-in-law behaves. What respect do you have for your elders?"
"Ah Fen!" Lin Xiaofu’s tone was reproachful.
"What do you want me to do?" Zhu Fen would have none of it, pointing at Zhou Fengqin, she argued: "She cursed me for not bearing sons; what’s wrong with calling her an old hag? You’re actually siding with her! Do you not want a son?"
Lin Xiaofu opened his mouth but couldn’t speak, feeling entirely helpless.
"Isn’t that the truth? Does my mom need to curse that?" Lin Xiaole’s voice cut in. Li Fangmei glanced over and saw that her son and several nephews had arrived. She asked, "What brings you back? Did you find Xiao Niao?"
"No," replied Lin Xiao’an, his expression somewhat grim. "We asked at the station, but that child never got on any bus."
"Maybe she hasn’t gone far then, perhaps just acted in the heat of the moment and will come back on her own in a few days," Li Fangmei said, hoping for the best despite feeling uneasy.
Everyone knew she was just trying to comfort herself, and they sighed without saying much more.
Zhu Fen, angered by Lin Xiaole’s words, turned as red as a liver, but seeing the eyes of the entire Lin Clan on her, she wilted.
"Aunt, please come in and take Xiao Yu away," Lin Xiaofu said, ignoring Zhu Fen’s attempts to block him.
Li Fangmei gave her nephew a long look before turning to her son, "Xiao Xi, go get Xiao Yu."
Zhu Fen tried to block the door, but Lin Xiaoxi was not having any of it; he pushed past her, found the child, and carried him out.
Lin Xiaomao hugged Xiao Mao to her chest, finally feeling settled. Remembering her sister’s instructions, she tightened her hold.
Her sister had said, "Don’t trust our parents and take good care of Xiao Yu."
As things were wrapping up, Lin Xiaoxi suddenly remembered the 1,900 yuan. He turned back to Lin Xiaofu, saying, "Xiao Fu, I need to talk to you, bring Xiao Kang, Xiao Lu, and Brother Xiao Shou to my house."
After a pause, with a glance at Zhu Fen, he added, "The wives don’t need to come."
Lin Xiaofu, worried about his wife’s tantrum, saw this as a chance to get away. He nodded and, without bidding Zhu Fen farewell, rushed over to his big brother’s house.
"You’re saying this money is for us?" The four brothers had braced themselves for a scolding from Aunt and Second Aunt, only to find out they were being given money?
Lin Xiaoxi’s expression was cold, "You know about the 7,900 yuan returned by the government. By the family rules, it should all be ours. But out of consideration for familial ties, we figured we keep 3,000 yuan, give 3,000 to Second Uncle’s family, and the remaining 1,900 to our little sister."
He paused, his voice dripping with sarcasm, "After all, you’ve also got the 3,000 yuan from selling our sister, so you’re not at a loss."
The four brothers Lin Xiaokang all hung their heads, shamed by the taunting from the cousin they watched grow up. No matter how thick-skinned, they felt humiliated.
"But when I visited our sister, she didn’t want the money."
At the mention of Lin Xiaoguai, the four Lin Xiaokang perked up their ears.
Lin Xiaoxi’s lips curved into a sneer, "She said she didn’t want to take the money only to let you think you don’t owe her anymore."
Hearing this, the brothers felt a pain in their hearts. Only now did they fully realize that they had truly lost their sister.
In the past, they felt a similar pain watching their sister arrive with gifts for Aunt and Second Aunt’s families, though she never came to see them, her brothers. But now, they were forced to face the reality.
