Chapter 131: Chapter 36: Becoming a Father_2
"Sister-in-law, take a deep breath, don’t rush, don’t rush," Zhou Fengqin’s panicked voice came from behind at that moment.
Lin Nianqiang turned around abruptly upon hearing this and saw Li Fangmei staggering and about to fall, with Lin Xiaomao in her arms also looking like she was going to tumble down. Zhou Fengqin was struggling to support her, but ultimately, she was old and it looked like she wouldn’t be able to hold on for long.
He realized in an instant that his sister-in-law had been frightened by the cleaver he had just wielded; after all, if someone had died, even he wouldn’t be able to escape being locked up.
"Quick, get those two brats to help," he wanted to step forward himself, but after showing such force just moments ago, he truly didn’t have much strength left.
It was fortunate that in the past two years, his niece had sent all sorts of nourishing gifts home, otherwise, he would be feeling more than just drained of strength.
Without needing him to say anything, two younger members of the clan rushed up to steady the people, "Auntie, are you all right?"
Li Fangmei finally caught her breath, putting aside her anger at Lin Nianqiang and hurriedly placed the child down. She then turned to the clan elders and said, "My fellow clansmen, look at the state her own mother has left this child in."
Only then did everyone notice Lin Xiaomao. Seeing the bruises on her face and the thin cotton jacket filled with holes of varying sizes, revealing cotton stained with bright red blood, and the mottled blood on her exposed hands, they all gasped in shock.
"Did you beat her?" the tall, bald elder, who seemed to be the oldest there, glared at Zhu Fen and asked.
The Lin Family had always been united, a fact that had not changed even through the Cultural Revolution. Instead, their bonds had grown even closer as they supported each other through those times.
Zhu Fen was now lacking the arrogance she had earlier, shrinking back and saying feebly, "The child was disobedient, what’s wrong with me hitting her a bit?"
"Shut your damn mouth!" another skinny old man, his anger clearly visible, retorted, "Lin Guoqiang really had bad luck, encountering such unfilial descendants like you, first selling his daughter and now trying to beat his granddaughter to death. Are you even human anymore? Aren’t you afraid that Lin Guoqiang will not rest in peace and will come looking for you in the middle of the night?"
The issue with Lin Xiaoguai before was not that the clan didn’t want to intervene; after all, Lin Xiaoguai, even though a girl, was a prospective university student who brought honor to the clan, and they naturally afforded her special attention.
But Lin Xiaokang and the other brothers, as Lin Xiaoguai’s own siblings, had made their decision, and the elders really had no place interfering. They tried to get Li Fangmei and Lin Nianqiang’s families to step in, but upon hearing Li Fangmei’s views—which seemed quite reasonable to the clan—they reluctantly agreed.
Hearing the old man’s words, the other elders nodded in agreement. Lin Guoqiang had been a notable figure in the clan, and who would have guessed that not one of his four sons turned out well, even selling off his cherished daughter.
"What’s everyone gathered here for?" Suddenly, a voice sounded from behind the crowd.
Lin Xiaofu made his way through the crowd to his own doorstep, looking at the broken window and Zhu Fen with a puzzled expression, "Ah Fen, what happened?"
Zhu Fen reflexively wanted to snitch, but upon seeing the surrounding Lin Clan members, she shrank back and said, "Oh, I just accidentally hit Xiao Mao too hard."
Xiao Mao?
Lin Xiaofu subconsciously searched for his second daughter and, upon seeing the girl with a bruised face, frightfully pale, he was momentarily stunned and then spoke with a hint of disbelief, "Xiao Mao?" His voice was very soft, as if he couldn’t believe that the child whose features were hard to discern from the beating was his daughter.
"Daddy," Lin Xiaomao’s voice was timid as she called out, then she buried her head in Li Fangmei’s embrace.
She remembered her sister’s words, her sister had said that neither Daddy nor Mom could be trusted. She also knew that if Mom intended to beat her to death, Daddy certainly wouldn’t be able to stop it.
Strangely enough, at that moment, the previously blurred memory of her aunt became crystal clear in her mind—the tender love made the tears well up in her eyes even more.
It was then that she began to understand why her sister had exclaimed, "She truly seems more like my mother."
Lin Xiaomao cried even harder, while Lin Xiaofu, unsure of what to say, found himself faced with increasingly scornful looks from the surrounding Lin Clan members.
Lin Xiaofu’s mood grew darker. He did care for the child—notwithstanding regret that she wasn’t a boy—but in the end, she was his own flesh and blood, how could he genuinely be indifferent? But since his wife was against spending money on the children, all he dared to do were stealthily slip them a coin or two; more than that was out of the question.
He was anxious when his eldest daughter disappeared, running out to search for her, yet upon returning, to see his second daughter beaten so badly pained his heart. Even more so, he felt an anger toward Zhu Fen that he had never felt before.
However, accustomed to his own timidity, his anger didn’t last long before it dissipated.
He thought to himself, let it go, after all, he had a lifetime to spend with his wife.
Seeing him like this, Li Fangmei and the other elders shook their heads internally; Lin Xiaofu was beyond help.
"Xiao Mao and Xiao Yu can’t live with their parents anymore," Li Fangmei had made up her mind, looking at Lin Xiaofu, she declared, "Today, I intend to take the two children away. What do you think?" If not for the 3,000 yuan and her son’s accomplishments, she wouldn’t have been able to make such a decision, but now she didn’t mind raising two more children at all.
Li Fangmei’s greatest virtue was her casual attitude toward money; she never took it too seriously.
Everyone thought Lin Xiaofu would refuse, but instead, he looked at his daughter and said, "Alright, Aunt, take the children with you. I will send their living expenses to you every month."
This was the only thing he could do for his children as a father.
As her partner, he was all too aware of Zhu Fen’s plans for the daughters.
