Chapter 127: Chapter 34 Lin Xiaoniao_2
As a rural man, Shen Chi always felt skeptical about his younger sister’s avidity, just like boiling water; when the fire is too strong, it’s easy for the water to run dry.
He worried that Shen Chi might pick up the city folk’s habit of loving the new and growing tired of the old. Wouldn’t that just end up causing his little sister to suffer?
However, his concerns were baseless, and he couldn’t voice them; he could only keep them hidden in his heart.
That’s why he had even more motivation to do business.
Upon hearing his words, Li Fangmei, Lin Nianqiang, and Zhou Fengqin all showed a hint of a smile on their faces. Lin Nianqiang, waving his fist, said, "If he dares to treat Wanwan poorly, I’ll punch his nose flat."
That was his signature move, although it had caused plenty of trouble in the past and given his older and younger brothers endless headaches.
Lin Nianqiang sighed sadly; of the three brothers, he was the only one left now.
"Little sister said that lamb and beef have to be fresh to taste good, so she told me to send some to big sister’s place as well," Lin Xiaoxi added, pointing at the meat.
Though they had to distribute it amongst seven or eight families, there was so much lamb and beef that there really was no worry there wouldn’t be enough to go around.
Here, Li Fangmei directed everyone to start dividing the meat, while on the other side, Lin Xiaoguai’s four older brothers couldn’t help feeling bitter upon hearing the news.
Chen Hong glanced at the shoe upper in her hand that no matter what she did wouldn’t come out right and sighed with a bitter expression. Lin Xiaokang chopped the pig feed with a gloomy face, and Lin Chao bowed his head to do his homework, his face hidden in shadow, unreadable.
At Lin Xiaofu’s house, Lin Xiao Niao vigorously scrubbed dirty clothes in the basin while Lin Xiao Mao sneaked a glance at her sister and then at their temper-flaring mom, whispering fearfully, "Sis, I’m scared..."
She thought her voice was very soft, but in reality, the house was so quiet that everyone present heard her.
"What are you scared of?" Zhu Fen glared at her, "Am I, your mother, really going to eat you up?"
"Why are you snapping at Xiao Mao?" Lin Xiao Niao slammed the clothes in her hand down, "You’re only tough at home. I’ve told you not to only have eyes for money, but you won’t listen. So, who are you jealous of now?"
"Who said I’m jealous?" Zhu Fen bit back fiercely, "Have your eyes seen wrong? I am dissatisfied, do you understand? What has Lin Xiaoguai done? She gives all the goods to outsiders but none to her own brother’s family, is there any sense in that? Go ahead and ask anyone, and they’ll agree I’m not in the wrong."
"Even if they don’t know you sold off my aunt!" Lin Xiao Niao glared with eyes filled with loathing, "Uncle Xiao Ping and the others are outsiders, and you’re the insider? Are you acting like one?"
"You ungrateful girl!" Zhu Fen felt shivers from her penetrating gaze but still stubbornly said, "Who are you talking to? I am your mother!"
"I would rather not have a mother like you!" Lin Xiao Niao shouted, "Apart from giving birth to me, what else have you done for me? When I was young, it was my aunt who washed my diapers; she even took me with her when she went to school. I’d crawl under her desk; when I was hungry, she fed me, and when I was thirsty, she gave me water to drink. I’ve only worn new clothes three times in my whole life, all made by my aunt who bought the fabric with her own money. She is more of a mother to me! And as for Xiao Mao and Xiao Yu, when have you ever looked after them? Before, it was my aunt, now it’s me. Do you think you qualify as a mother?"
"Who asked you to not be sons?" Zhu Fen retorted self-righteously, "If you were a son, would I need to sell off your aunt? In the future, when you’re all married off and leave your mother behind, shouldn’t I save some money for my old age?"
"That’s what you said!" Lin Xiao Niao snapped back viciously, "Since you said that, don’t ever expect me to spend a cent on you in the future!"
"You!" Unable to argue with her, Zhu Fen felt intimidated by her wolfish ferocity but habitually sought to vent her anger on the timid Lin Xiao Mao. Quick as lightning, Lin Xiao Niao slapped away her hand and said with fierce words, "Try to lay a finger on her, I dare you!"
She shielded the nearly crying Lin Xiao Mao behind her back and warned, "Let me tell you, since you refuse to provide for us, don’t even think about hitting us!"
Zhu Fen stormed off in a rage while Lin Xiao Niao breathed a sigh of relief. She knew she could never win in a fight against her mom. She glanced at her father who sat at the door in complete silence the entire time, filled with disappointment at the realization that this home was no longer tenable.
She pulled Lin Xiao Mao into the room where Lin Xiao Yu was taking her afternoon nap.
"Sis, why doesn’t Xiao Cao play with us anymore? Last time I went to find her, she ignored me," Lin Xiao Mao said with tears brimming, confused.
Lin Xiao Niao looked at her and felt both helpless and worried; if she left, what would become of Xiao Mao, who was as meek as their father? And Xiao Yu too...
But she knew she simply couldn’t stay. If their mom could sell off her aunt, she could do the same to her own daughters; she couldn’t just sit and wait for that to happen.
She reached out and touched Lin Xiao Mao’s dry yellow hair, "Xiao Cao doesn’t play with us because our mom and dad did something wrong, so you shouldn’t be sad, Xiao Mao. It’s not your fault."
"So, did mom and dad really sell off my aunt?" Lin Xiao Mao, being a somewhat grown child, still had a vague memory of her aunt, unlike Lin Xiao Yu, who was too young to remember anything.
Because she was timid and not as assertive as her sister, she was also bullied by other kids in the village. Lin Xiao Niao didn’t always hear the taunts, but she did.
Struck by her question, Lin Xiao Niao paused, unsure of what to say next.
Looking into her sister’s innocent eyes, Lin Xiao Niao’s throat felt dry, and she resolvedly said, "Xiao Mao, remember this: mom and dad made mistakes, but we can’t be like them. You might not understand right now, but remember my words; if I’m not around, you have to take care of yourself, don’t trust them too much, especially mom. She only cares about herself, you have to be wary. You’re also a big sister, you must take good care of Xiao Yu."
Lin Xiao Mao didn’t grasp the full meaning of her words but nodded innocently.
