Chapter 117: Chapter 29: Trouble?_2

Bai Lian was so revered by many precisely because she emerged from the mire unsoiled.

Lin Xiaoguai now seemed to fit a similar mold in the eyes of these two individuals.

Seeing them a bit dazed, Lin Xiaoguai tapped on the table and said, "Let’s get back on topic. If you want to plant vegetables on the balcony, you’ll need to prepare the racks yourselves. As for how to plant, I can’t give you a full theory course, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask, and I won’t be stingy with answers."

Hearing this, Bian Yumei and Hu Fangfang breathed a sigh of relief, but then seemed somewhat troubled.

"Xiao Guai, where did you buy those racks? Can you tell us?" Bian Yumei asked, while Hu Fangfang also nodded eagerly in anticipation.

"They weren’t bought." Seeing Little Niangao playing until he was sweaty, Lin Xiaoguai went over to loosen his clothes and then continued, "They were a gift from a friend. If you want some, you can go to Sister-in-law Er Mei’s husband, Jiang Wei; he’s skilled in carpentry. If you buy the wood and offer him some labor fees, he should be willing to make them." She figured Sister-in-law Er Mei wouldn’t mind earning some extra cash.

Bian Yumei and Hu Fangfang were somewhat stunned by this information, and after hesitating for a while, Bian Yumei tactfully said, "Our relationship with Wu Ermei isn’t that great."

"Not that great?" Lin Xiaoguai was a bit confused.

Bian Yumei touched her nose and said, "In the Military Family Area, some military wives come from the city, some from the countryside. Except for a few, there isn’t much interaction between the two groups."

Lin Xiaoguai suddenly understood; she had sensed something was off before, but since she wasn’t close friends with Wu Ermei or Yu Xiaomiao, she hadn’t inquired. So that was the situation.

"Then have you had any disagreements?" she inquired.

"No, nothing like that," Hu Fangfang bit her lip and said, "But isn’t it a bit embarrassing to ask for help just like that?" The key issue was that it would really be a blow to their pride.

As city dwellers, even if their lives were not necessarily better than those from the countryside, there was still a sense of pride in their hearts.

Lin Xiaoguai picked up on her implication, and although she was somewhat speechless, she also understood. But...

"Then I really can’t help you; you’ll have to find another carpenter to make the racks for you. Though, I should remind you, if you don’t have really good wood, don’t make three layers like I did." Lin Xiaoguai offered her humanitarian advice.

Seeing that it was getting close to dinner time, Lin Xiaoguai asked, "Would you like to stay for dinner?"

"No, no, we better not," they hurriedly stood up. They knew very well that Lin Xiaoguai was just being polite; if they really stayed for dinner, that would be utterly shameless.

Once the guests had left, Yaya came bouncing over and hugged her leg, "The guests are gone; Auntie, come play with us."

Yaya was very sensible. She knew when there were guests, she always kept Little Niangao entertained and didn’t disturb the adults’ conversation, even managing to soothe Little Niangao whenever he wanted his mother.

She loved playing with Aunt Lin because Aunt Lin was very patient, spoke interesting words, told her stories, taught her fun arithmetic games—with kisses and hugs as prizes—and sang songs for her and her brother, never getting annoyed by them.

"That won’t do," Lin Xiaoguai tapped her nose, "Auntie needs to cook now. Isn’t Yaya hungry?"

Yaya was a bit disappointed, but perked up at the mention of eating, "What are you making today, Auntie? Can I help?"

"Yes, you can help. Auntie is making fish stew with tofu and mushrooms, and Moo Shu Pork. Yaya, can you wash the mushrooms for me and tear the wood ear mushrooms into small pieces?" Even though Yaya was there, Lin Xiaoguai still only prepared two dishes at lunch but in slightly larger quantities.

Lin Xiaoguai always encouraged children’s interest in helping with tasks.

"Okay!" Yaya replied cheerfully, then asked, "What will little brother eat?"

"Little brother will have shrimp and tofu puree."

Little Niangao was playing on the carpet alone, while Yaya followed Lin Xiaoguai into the kitchen to help.

When Wu Ermei arrived, Lin Xiaoguai was serving Yaya her food, and was a little surprised to see her, "Sister-in-law Er Mei, what brings you here?" She knew the other woman had never visited at mealtime before.

As she spoke, she motioned to let her in.

"No need, I’ll just say a few words and go." Wu Ermei waved her off and asked, "I heard Bian Yumei and Hu Fangfang came to see you?"

"They wanted to know about planting vegetables on the balcony; what about it?" Lin Xiaoguai couldn’t understand why she looked so anxious.

"Planting vegetables?" Wu Ermei paused and then said, "Anyway, listen to me, don’t get involved with Hu Fangfang at all."

"What’s that supposed to mean?" Lin Xiaoguai was a bit perplexed, knowing Sister-in-law Er Mei wouldn’t say this just because Hu Fangfang was from the city; had she only mentioned Hu Fangfang and not Bian Yumei?

But today, it was almost all Bian Yumei doing the talking, and she hadn’t really noticed anything wrong with Hu Fangfang.

"That Hu Fangfang..." Wu Ermei furrowed her brows, as if struggling to describe her, and after a long pause, she tapped her head and said, "There’s something wrong with her brain."

"Huh?" Lin Xiaoguai was stunned. What did she mean?

Seeing her reaction, Wu Ermei simply leaned in and whispered, "That woman, she treats everyone she knows as a friend, which would be fine on its own. But whenever she encounters a problem, she immediately turns to her ’friends’ for help. If you don’t oblige, she’ll squeeze out a couple of crocodile tears, and you’ll be the worst of the worst."

Seeming to feel this was still not enough, she left with, "I can’t talk more now, wait for me, I’ll come to you again later," and went back.

Lin Xiaoguai was left standing there, reflecting on Wu Ermei’s words, with an uneasy feeling in her mind. (To be continued.
