Chapter 116: Chapter 29: Trouble?

Ignoring the discomfort in her heart, Lin Xiaoguai tore open a custard bun and used a small spoon to feed some of the filling to Little Niangao.

Little Niangao had already eaten breakfast, so after half a bun, he refused to eat any more. Lin Xiaoguai wiped his mouth and was about to carry him to play on the carpet when she heard the doorbell ring.

"Yaya, watch your brother for a moment; Auntie’s going to answer the door."

"Okay," Yaya swallowed her mouthful of custard bun and nodded vigorously.

As Lin Xiaoguai approached the entrance, she opened the door, expecting Wu Ermei to have arrived – after all, the only military wives she was close with were those two – but instead, there were two unfamiliar women standing at the door.

The woman on the left had short hair just past her ears, a round face with large eyes, and a friendly smile at the corners of her mouth. The woman on the right was slightly taller, with curled hair past her shoulders and a small, delicate, pretty oval face, her expression somewhat awkward.

"May I ask who you are?" Lin Xiaoguai asked, puzzled. She was certain she didn’t know these two women, who didn’t seem to belong to any group of military wives friendly with Sister-in-law Er Mei. From their clothes, it was clear these two were definitely from the city.

"Hello, I am Bian Yumei, and this is my good friend Hu Fangfang," said the woman with the round face, her smile still present but with a hint of embarrassment. "We need to speak with you about something; may we come in?"

Lin Xiaoguai hesitated for a moment but then thought of the safety of the Military Family Area, so she nodded and let the two women in.

After pouring two cups of tea for her guests, Lin Xiaoguai kept an eye on Yaya and Little Niangao playing beside her while she asked, "What can I do for you?"

Bian Yumei and Hu Fangfang exchanged a glance before Hu Fangfang pursed her lips and said, "We want to ask you to teach us how to grow vegetables on the balcony."

"What?" Lin Xiaoguai was startled; she hadn’t expected this request.

Bian Yumei, holding her tea cup, explained, "Here’s the thing: both of us grew up in the city, and we never went to the countryside to do farm work, so we don’t know how to farm, and we can’t handle tasks like applying manure or fertilizer, which is why we never tried to open up a plot of land. But now, seeing you grow vegetables on your balcony, and you use only chemical fertilizers, we were hoping to learn from you." Both her and Hu Fangfang lacked experience in farming – one an only child and the other from a large family, neither had the opportunity to do farm work in the countryside.

Before, they had thought about growing their own vegetables to save on grocery costs, but they were quickly discouraged when they saw the work involved, especially handling manure, which was too much for them to bear. They admired the stories they heard from others who knew about farming, but when it came to actually doing it themselves, especially without any pressure, they were quite unwilling.

However, Lin Xiaoguai’s live example showed them a different way to cultivate vegetables, which naturally sparked their interest.

Although they were city girls, they weren’t spoiled; as long as they didn’t have to handle manure, they were willing to get dirty and tired to save on household expenses.

"This really isn’t something that needs teaching; it’s all based on the experience of farmers, with no real theory to follow," Lin Xiaoguai said truthfully. Even in her previous life when she started learning to grow vegetables, without the space and system benefits, she had no instructional books, and she simply followed her father’s farming advice from memory.

Back in the countryside, she might not have worked the fields, but her father would still chat with her about when it was time to sow, when to thin out the seedlings... She had never done it but listened closely, and with a good memory, she still retained most of that knowledge years later.

"You’re not from the city?" Bian Yumei asked, her face full of surprise, with Hu Fangfang showing the same expression.

Lin Xiaoguai paused, not understanding why the conversation had turned this way, but still answered, "Yes, I was born in the countryside and only moved to the city after I got married."

Despite getting the confirmation from Lin Xiaoguai herself, Bian Yumei and Hu Fangfang still seemed incredulous. There was nothing about Lin Xiaoguai that seemed unrefined like a country person; her clothes might not be fashionable, but they were attractively neat and tidy.

Standing next to her, they couldn’t feel any sense of superiority – in fact, they had previously thought she was a lady from a wealthy family.

But at this moment, it was difficult for them to harbor any feelings of disdain. Not only were they not the haughty, influential type to start with, but the demeanor of the person before them not only prevented them from looking down on her, it actually increased their respect.

It’s like when a child, trained from a young age to be an elite, grows up to create a big company as an entrepreneur, people naturally give them a thumbs up, but if a child comes from poverty, without education, and builds their own company from scratch, the admiration and praise in people’s hearts are even more genuine.
