My Happy Daily Life After Being Reborn -
Chapter 110 - 26 **
Chapter 110: Chapter 26 **
Upon entering the kitchen and seeing the countertop brimming with all sorts of ingredients, especially the whole chicken, whole duck, an entire slab of ribs, and the huge pork hock, Yu Xiaomiao was astounded. Then her eyes fell upon the basin containing two sizable carps. She knew Lin Xiaoguai’s family was well-off, but she hadn’t expected such an extravagant welcome for a subordinate.
She was only stunned for a moment before quickly stepping forward to help.
As they were nearly done, Lin Xiaoguai checked the time and realized it was almost mealtime. She took out some cold rice from the cupboard, beat six eggs, added some chopped green onions, and quickly whipped up a pot of egg fried rice.
"Xiao Miao, stay and have dinner with us and Yaya," Lin Xiaoguai called out while serving the egg fried rice, to Yu Xiaomiao who was tending the coal stove on the balcony.
"No need, we’ll go back and eat," Yu Xiaomiao said, placing the pot filled with water and ribs on the stove and wiping her sweat as she walked inside.
Lin Xiaoguai placed three plates of egg fried rice, varying in size, on the dining table and said directly to Yaya, "Yaya, come eat."
Yu Xiaomiao paused for a moment, looking up to see her daughter’s eyes filled with longing. She found she couldn’t bring herself to refuse.
"Xiao Miao, I’ve already made the rice. If you don’t eat, no one in our house eats reheated fried rice, and it’ll just have to be thrown away," Lin Xiaoguai added, as she put more firewood in the stove.
Eventually, Yu Xiaomiao murmured, "Then, I’ll have to trouble you."
"Auntie, what will little brother eat?" Yaya inquired, not forgetting Little Niangao.
"Don’t worry, Little Niangao won’t go hungry," Lin Xiaoguai replied with a smile. "I’m steaming an egg custard for him."
Reassured, Yaya scooped a generous spoonful of egg fried rice into her mouth and swallowed it voraciously, asking, "How many eggs did you use, Auntie?"
"Why don’t you guess?" Lin Xiaoguai said, smiling at her.
Yaya pondered for a moment before hesitantly guessing, "Three?" Her mother had made egg fried rice for her, but it wasn’t as delicious as Aunt Lin’s. Her mother was stingy with oil, and for the three of them, they’d only use two eggs. One could taste the egg but not actually find any in a mouthful. But just now, she had actually bitten into bits of egg!
Yu Xiaomiao also took a bite of the egg fried rice and instantly knew that no shortage of eggs was used in this dish.
"Wrong, it’s six," Lin Xiaoguai said with a smile.
Yaya’s eyes widened in amazement, looking at her plate of egg fried rice with something akin to worship. "For the three of us, does that mean I ate two eggs myself?"
Lin Xiaoguai couldn’t help but laugh. She was still just a child and didn’t consider that her appetite certainly couldn’t match that of the adults. However, she didn’t want to spoil her good mood and chose not to correct her misconception.
Listening, Yu Xiaomiao felt a twinge of sadness. It was only two extra eggs. Although she had grown up in the countryside, and her family wasn’t wealthy, her mother would steam two eggs for her on top of the rice every birthday. But now, her daughter was overjoyed by just two eggs.
She must be such a failure as a mother to let her child live a life even worse than her own childhood.
Yu Xiaomiao’s self-blame was brief. Realizing that she would be able to earn money and her daughter’s life would surely improve, she gradually calmed down.
Coming back to her senses, Yu Xiaomiao noticed the three portions of egg fried rice on the table. It was understandable for Yaya being a child, but Lin Xiaoguai’s portion was just over half of her own. Influenced by her daughter, she thought, with only a little more than half the rice that Lin Xiaoguai had, did that mean she had eaten three eggs herself?
"Xiao Guai, is that enough rice for you? Do you want me to give you some of mine?" she said, beginning to push her own rice towards Lin Xiaoguai.
Lin Xiaoguai quickly intervened, "No need, this is plenty for me. I’ve always eaten this amount."
Yu Xiaomiao believed Lin Xiaoguai had no reason to lie to her and felt envious, thinking how nice it would be to have such a small appetite herself and save a lot of food back home.
Lin Xiaoguai was unaware of Yu Xiaomiao’s thoughts, otherwise, she would have found it awkward. Her appetite wasn’t natural; in fact, she could eat as much as Yu Xiaomiao, if not more. But having been through the future once, she could no longer return to "normal." However, Yu Xiaomiao didn’t need to do anything. Once the country’s supplies became abundant and the people’s intake increased, everyone’s appetite would naturally decrease to match hers.
After the meal and making sure Little Niangao was fed, Yu Xiaomiao insisted on staying to help. Lin Xiaoguai tried to decline several times without success, then stopped insisting. Having an extra person around would certainly make things a lot easier for her.
