Chapter 107: Chapter 24 Yu Xiaomiao’s Request_2
Little Niangao, however, didn’t behave as usual and slipped into the blankets.
Yu Xiaomiao looked surprised, and Lin Xiaoguai explained helplessly, "He seems a bit frightened and now is reluctant to eat anything."
Indeed, since Little Niangao was born, he’d never faced much hardship; his body was exceptionally strong but that also had a downside. His tolerance for pain wasn’t as high as other babies his age, and he was still a bit traumatized.
Lin Xiaoguai, feeling sorry for her son, coaxed softly, "Little Niangao, come out. Mommy has cooked some nice porridge for you. If you eat it, your tummy won’t hurt anymore."
Little Niangao peeked out a pair of eyes, shining brightly as if asking, "Really?"
"Shall we try a spoonful to see if it’s good? If it isn’t tasty, we won’t eat it," Lin Xiaoguai continued to coax.
Knowing his mother always kept her promises, Little Niangao slowly emerged from the blanket, opened his mouth with an ’ah’, and took a taste.
Lin Xiaoguai smiled as she fed her son a small spoonful of porridge. As expected, Little Niangao enjoyed it and obediently finished the entire bowl of job’s tears and lotus seed porridge.
Although it was just a bowl of porridge, Lin Xiaoguai had put a lot of effort into it. The water she used to cook the porridge was the spiritual spring water from her space, the job’s tears weren’t the ordinary kind but the best-tasting variety from the exchange store, and the lotus seeds were a very special kind known as baby lotus. This type of lotus seed had an exceptionally gentle nurturing effect on a baby’s stomach. She had chosen them out of tens of thousands of different lotus seeds while enduring dizziness and blurred vision.
After finishing his meal, Little Niangao continued to play with toys. Lin Xiaoguai looked at Yaya and said, "There’s another bowl of porridge in the kitchen for Yaya. Go ahead and get it." Since Yu Xiaomiao had already figured it out, she saw no need to hide it anymore.
Yaya looked at Yu Xiaomiao eagerly. Yu Xiaomiao opened her mouth as if to object but then thought better of it, considering how long they had already taken advantage. To refuse now would only appear pretentious, so she nodded, "Go ahead."
Yaya silently cheered and scurried off to the kitchen.
"You spoil her too much," Yu Xiaomiao complained.
Lin Xiaoguai pursed her lips with a smile, "You can’t blame me for that. Yaya is just too lovable."
Yu Xiaomiao sighed and remained silent. If it were someone else, they might have felt uncomfortable or even insulted. But she was a perceptive person; clearly, the other party intended only kindness. Who would spend so much effort and money to "insult" others?
Thinking about it made her feel bittersweet. She wished her daughter could eat more good food too, but her mother-in-law was so afraid of her taking control of her son’s money. She held onto most of Guo Zhong’s allowance and, without much left, Yu Xiaomiao felt powerless even with the best intentions.
Unaware of Yu Xiaomiao’s thoughts, Lin Xiaoguai carried her son to the living room carpet, turned on the television for the two children to play together, and then asked Yu Xiaomiao, "How is your job search going?"
Yu Xiaomiao had mentioned looking for a job some time ago, hence Lin Xiaoguai’s inquiry.
At her words, Yu Xiaomiao’s expression softened, and she smiled, "I got lucky and found a private restaurant looking for waitstaff, offering twenty yuan a month."
She hesitated before adding, "The only thing is, they want me to start work next week, but the kindergarten I asked isn’t willing to take Yaya because they think she’s too young."
Lin Xiaoguai frowned upon hearing this. She knew that kids had to be at least six years old in nominal terms to attend kindergarten at that time, but children who were born earlier in the year and thus larger in size could be accepted at the age of five. Yaya’s birthday was in February, so theoretically, she should have been eligible for kindergarten by then.
But soon, Lin Xiaoguai realized the likely reason; the children in their area all attended the kindergarten of the military’s guard zone, where the teaching quality was no less than that of the outside, with teachers being military wives who graduated from preschool education programs. Given this, the teachers would surely know about Yaya’s mischievous nature.
She felt there was nothing wrong with a child being naughty, as it was their nature, but teachers of that era didn’t seem to think so. If she were to ask the kindergarten teachers of the future what kind of children they liked most, they’d surely say lively and imaginative ones. However, back then, such children would definitely be labeled as "troublesome," while quiet and obedient children were most preferred.
However, these thoughts were better left unsaid to Yu Xiaomiao to avoid making Yaya suffer when she returned.
"So, what are you planning to do?" Lin Xiaoguai asked.
She believed there was little chance Yu Xiaomiao would give up on the job.
Sure enough, Yu Xiaomiao spoke hesitantly, "I was wondering if you could help look after Yaya for me? I’ll give you ten yuan out of my monthly wage." She was originally only planning to offer five yuan, as it was really just for one meal a day and the monthly food expenses for a child were no more than two yuan at most. The rest could be considered payment for Lin Xiaoguai’s services, which wasn’t much, but after all, the other party was already looking after her own son and taking care of one more wouldn’t be a hindrance.
But the food at Lin Xiaoguai’s home was simply too good, and from how she treated Yaya, it was clear she wouldn’t let her suffer in the future. She figured even if it were only ten yuan, it was still better than having no income at all.
Though she’d spoken, she didn’t hold out much hope. It was apparent that Lin Xiaoguai wasn’t in need of money, and ten yuan probably wasn’t even enough for her family’s weekly expenses.
Lin Xiaoguai was taken aback on hearing this and after a moment’s thought responded, "Well, I could do that, considering I don’t have much else on my plate." If it were any other child, she would definitely refuse, but she did have a soft spot for Yaya.
Originally wanting to decline the ten yuan, she reconsidered, thinking it might make Yu Xiaomiao feel awkward. Yet she figured she could accept the money and spend it all on Yaya.
"Really?" Yu Xiaomiao looked surprised and then hesitated, "Don’t you need to discuss it with Lieutenant Colonel Shen first?"
"There’s no need, he won’t object," Lin Xiaoguai confidently stated.
