Chapter 105: Chapter 23 Little Niangao Gets Sick_2

"Wanwan, let’s take Little Niangao out to play tomorrow," Shen Chi said while flipping through the channels.

Lin Xiaoguai was taken aback, "Why do you suddenly want to go out to play?"

"There are so many attractions in Shanghai, it would be such a waste not to visit them in the next two years," Shen Chi usually wouldn’t think of these things when he was away, but he overheard his subordinates discussing where to take their relatives visiting the military base. He was annoyed with himself for not considering this before, even though he and Wanwan were now married. Weren’t their circumstances similar to those dating couples? Besides, although he had taken a shortcut in marrying Wanwan, he didn’t want to deprive her of anything other women could have.

"Sure, you can make the arrangements," Lin Xiaoguai replied belatedly.

Although she had visited all the attractions of Shanghai in her previous life, revisiting the same places at a different time and under different circumstances would certainly evoke different feelings.

Hearing her replied, Shen Chi smiled, "Don’t worry, I will make sure you have a great time." He had done his homework for this.

But despite their good intentions, the trip did not materialize because Little Niangao, who had always been healthy, suddenly fell ill.

"What’s the matter? He hasn’t caught a cold or eaten anything odd, how could a healthy child suddenly have diarrhea?" Shen Chi asked the military doctor anxiously.

Lin Xiaoguai was also very distressed, especially when she heard Little Niangao’s whimpering due to discomfort. The child had barely cried a few times up to this point, and this sudden illness was heartbreaking for her.

The veteran military doctor, in his fifties, frowned, listened again with his stethoscope, and finally said, "This is clearly food-related diarrhea."

"That’s impossible," Shen Chi and Lin Xiaoguai declared in unison.

The old doctor was slightly annoyed at their response. Lin Xiaoguai said, "Doctor Zhou, I am extremely careful with my child’s diet, and this is the first time Little Niangao has had diarrhea."

"What have you been feeding him in the past few days?" The doctor frowned but persisted.

Lin Xiaoguai recalled carefully, "From yesterday morning until now, he has had egg custard, apple puree, beef and oat porridge, vegetable and rice paste, and chicken and corn porridge, all of which were served warm. Right, he also had a small cup of carrot juice this morning."

The doctor was surprised by this somewhat luxurious menu but remembered that the child’s father was a Lieutenant Colonel. He figured the parents must really cherish their child, and indeed, the diet was faultless and very nutritious; the mother obviously put a lot of thought into it.

"Are you sure there’s nothing else?"

Lin Xiaoguai was about to shake her head when Yaya rushed in, looking panicked, "Auntie, is Little Niangao sick?"

"Yes, Little Niangao has an upset stomach," Lin Xiaoguai nodded but had no time for more questions, turning to the doctor, "I’m sure he hasn’t eaten anything else. I prepare my son’s food myself; he never eats out."

The old doctor was puzzled too; this military wife didn’t seem like she was lying. Besides, when it comes to a child, he didn’t think she would. After some thought, he said, "Well, it’s a good thing the diarrhea isn’t severe. To spare the child the hardship, we should avoid giving him an IV drip. Just go home and make some shepherd’s purse soup, and he should recover in a few days."

"Really, no IV drip?" Shen Chi was skeptical. Though child mortality rates were lower these days, accidents still happened, and while he didn’t care about others, his own son simply couldn’t have any issues.

"No need," the doctor confirmed, "Too many IV drips aren’t good either."

"Thank you, doctor," With that, Shen Chi still half-doubtingly dressed his son, wrapped him in a cloak, and picking him up, said to Lin Xiaoguai, "Let’s go home."

Seeing that Little Niangao had fallen asleep and was no longer whimpering, Lin Xiaoguai let out a sigh of relief. She noticed the somewhat bewildered Yaya nearby and took her hand, "Yaya, we’re going home."

Yaya nodded but continued to frown, deep in thought.

"Uncle, Auntie, I know what made Little Niangao sick!" Yaya suddenly shouted halfway home.

Shen Chi and Lin Xiaoguai were startled.

"What are you talking about, Yaya?" Lin Xiaoguai asked, puzzled.

"I mean, I know what made Little Niangao get diarrhea," Yaya repeated her earlier statement and added, "Yesterday afternoon, near the shooting range, I saw Aunt Liang giving Little Niangao soda to drink." What she didn’t say was, she, too, had craved it but knew that Aunt Liang didn’t like her, so she endured her thirst.

Shen Chi looked at Lin Xiaoguai, "Who’s Aunt Liang?"

"It’s Liang Yuwei," Lin Xiaoguai answered with a stern face.

She remembered the scene at the time. Lately, she had been "coincidentally" running into Liang Yuwei quite often, but since they didn’t get along, she had purposefully distanced herself from her. Yu Xiaomiao was also there at the time, and though they were engaged in a deep conversation, she had still kept an eye on her son.

She remembered that Yaya had pushed Little Niangao into the shooting range in the stroller, and many children found pushing the stroller fun, all vying for their turn. After playing for a while, Yaya took out a water bottle and a cup from the stroller to pour water for Little Niangao...

No, that wasn’t right! Lin Xiaoguai suddenly realized she hadn’t actually seen Yaya pour the water; she had just assumed it was Yaya because she had instructed her to give Little Niangao water from time to time.

But before that, Liang Yuwei had entered the shooting range with a bottle of soda, an extravagant item rarely purchased in those times. She was drinking it, and for a while, she had stood in such a way that both she and Little Niangao were out of Lin Xiaoguai’s view. Although Yaya also seemed to be holding the water bottle, tilting it as if she was pouring water, Lin Xiaoguai had not given it much thought then.

Lin Xiaoguai could imagine that Yaya had intended to pour water for Little Niangao, but Liang Yuwei must have said something and poured soda into the cup first. Yaya was young and didn’t understand that Little Niangao couldn’t drink cold soda, so she wouldn’t have thought to stop her. (To be continued.
