Chapter 101: Chapter 21 Fun Facts_2
"After that, things got simple," sighed Wu Ermei. "What should have been an easygoing couple became mired in hardship because of that woman’s interference, and they went through a lot before they could finally get married. Even now, because Yu Xiaomiao has only given birth to a daughter, her mother-in-law is still pushing her son to divorce and marry the woman who, due to past incidents, has a ruined reputation and can’t find anyone to marry."
"This mess was initially instigated by Liang Yuwei, but the root cause lies with that woman. Therefore, Yu Xiaomiao bears no grudge against her, but she definitely can’t live peacefully with her."
So that explained it; no wonder the atmosphere between those two had been so strange. However...
"Shouldn’t this matter be their personal affair? Sister-in-law Er Mei, how come you know so much about it?" Lin Xiaoguai asked, puzzled.
"Personal affair?" scoffed Wu Ermei, shaking her head. "Wang Guozhong’s mother made such a fuss that it reached the military district, and even the leaders were alerted. How could that be considered a personal affair?"
She curled her lip. "It’s been five years, and Wang Guozhong is still that minor company commander. In the end, it’s still because of that incident. It’s just his confused mother who still thinks Yu Xiaomiao has held back her son. On the other hand, Li Kun, because of his family connections, even though he was called by his superiors for a thought work session, still got promoted."
Lin Xiaoguai also felt somewhat sorry; it appeared that Wang Guozhong was truly unlucky. Liang Yuwei indirectly caused such trouble for Wang Guozhong, yet Yu Xiaomiao didn’t berate her harshly, which showed commendable restraint.
But it made sense—if one could tolerate such a troublesome mother-in-law, anyone’s patience would improve.
With this new understanding, Lin Xiaoguai grew more appreciative of Yu Xiaomiao. As a result, when she brought Yaya to visit the next day, her attitude had subtly changed.
"This little girl asks me every day where Little Niangao lives, saying ’Mommy, didn’t Aunt Lin tell you to take me to her house to play? You agreed,’" Yu Xiaomiao mimicked her daughter’s tone, a helpless look on her face. "I have no idea where she gets her thick skin from, since her father and I are not like that."
"No worries, I can’t wait," Lin Xiaoguai said, pulling out a can of mangoes. "Yaya, how about I open this can of fruit for you and your brother to enjoy?"
Yaya’s eyes glistened as she nodded incessantly, "Auntie, get me a spoon." Despite being a girl, she was much more generous than Xiao Shan and Xiao Liang.
Lin Xiaoguai really liked children who were straightforward and unabashed; it wasn’t a prejudice, but she found that such kids were bold and fun to talk to, making communication more relaxed.
It seemed Little Niangao shared preferences with his mother, as evidenced by his less enthusiastic interactions with Xiao Shan and Xiao Liang compared to Yaya.
"You shameless thing!" Yu Xiaomiao tapped her daughter’s head, then turned to Lin Xiaoguai, "Don’t listen to her, you should keep the canned fruit for yourself. Even if she gets it, she won’t appreciate the taste."
Canned fruit was expensive these days, and Yu Xiaomiao wouldn’t usually buy it for her daughter unless she was sick.
For this exact reason, Yaya craved canned fruit even more since she was rarely ill year-round.
Seeing Yaya look over eagerly, Lin Xiaoguai laughed, "Let her have some since it’s her first visit. Shen Chi and I don’t like it anyway, and Little Niangao can’t eat much of it."
With Lin Xiaoguai saying so, Yu Xiaomiao had no grounds to object and glared at her daughter, "Don’t just think about yourself."
"Mm-hmm," Yaya nodded vigorously, eyes glued to the bright orange mango in Lin Xiaoguai’s hand.
Lin Xiaoguai got a bowl and poured all the mangoes out, handing a spoon to Yaya. The little girl scooped some for Little Niangao first and then for herself, her eyes squinting in delight.
Lin Xiaoguai and Yu Xiaomiao watched, smiling. Yu Xiaomiao remarked, "This girl, all she knows is eating. Last time, the young guy next door coaxed her to call him daddy with some meat, and she actually did it. Guo Zhong was furious when he found out."
Lin Xiaoguai chuckled, "Really? I better be careful then, don’t want to raise a kid just for them to call someone else daddy."
Though she said this, she wasn’t worried at all; Yaya was like that because she rarely got to eat meat. Naturally, Lin Xiaoguai wouldn’t let Little Niangao crave meat.
"Mommy, you’re the silly one," quipped Yaya out of the blue. "Meat costs one yuan per pound now. If I can get some by calling someone daddy, only a fool wouldn’t!"
The phrase "only a fool wouldn’t" was one of Wang Guozhong’s pet sayings, which Yaya cleverly appropriated, leaving the adults in stitches yyn Xiaoguai.
"I never knew our Yaya was such a good little accountant!"
"That’s right," Yaya stated proudly, tilting her chin up. "Mommy’s so silly; lucky she has me to protect her."
"Oh my, I can’t handle it!" Lin Xiaoguai held her belly, laughing. "Yaya is just too funny."
She had never seen such an amusing child in either of her lifetimes. There were plenty of clever kids in the 21st century, but one as naive and cute as Yaya was a first for her.
Yu Xiaomiao was both amused and frustrated, but she couldn’t scold her.
"You hear what she says? It’s all because her dad spoils her," she finally managed to say.
Yaya had heard it so often she could’ve grown calluses on her ears she scooped a large spoonful of mango and swallowed it before looking up at Lin Xiaoguai, "Auntie, could you pretend I didn’t come today?"
"Why is that?" Lin Xiaoguai asked, curious.
Yu Xiaomiao already covered her face, embarrassed.
"That way, next time I come over, it would still be my first time, and I could eat canned fruit again!" Yaya’s face lit up with glee.
