Chapter 420: Chapter 414: I Just Like Being a Little Closer to You

Chen Jiayan withdrew his gaze and drove the car out.

Xie Baola was actually a bit sleepy, but considering that he was spending New Year’s alone, and was driving out in the middle of the night, she stayed awake.

The temperature in the car was very comfortable, making one drowsy.

She didn’t ask Chen Jiayan where he was taking her.

There was a faint scent of crisp lime on him, lingering subtly at her nostrils.

Xie Baola leaned against the seat and turned her head, her eyes resting on Chen Jiayan’s handsome face.

Suddenly, she spoke up, "Chen Jiayan, you are really good-looking."

Chen Jiayan, upon hearing her unexpected compliment, said nothing.

Xie Baola’s gaze shifted to his long fingers, "Your hands are good-looking too."

Chen Jiayan, "Can you keep quiet?"

Even though his heart was still, being praised in such a manner by a beautiful and enchanting woman inevitably stirred his emotions.

Right after he spoke, Xie Baola became even more audacious, "Even your voice is intoxicating to me."

Chen Jiayan, "..."

He fell silent.

Xie Baola chuckled a few times.

She folded her arms, watching him unwaveringly.

Her gaze was so intense it was impossible to ignore.

Chen Jiayan’s Adam’s apple bobbed slightly.

Xie Baola, as if she had discovered something new, exclaimed, "Chen Jiayan, your Adam’s apple moved."

Chen Jiayan’s voice was calm, "Swallowing."

He added indifferently, "Is that strange?"

Xie Baola puzzled, "Why would you swallow all of a sudden?"

"..."

He shouldn’t have spoken.

He sighed long and hard, "If you don’t quiet down, I’ll get out of the car."

Huh, threatening me?

So Xie Baola thought but she didn’t speak further.

Seeing her quiet down, Chen Jiayan’s rigid body gradually relaxed.

He kept his eyes strictly on the road ahead.

Xie Baola’s eyelids fought each other; after a tug of war, they finally shut, and her breathing deepened.

More than forty minutes later, Chen Jiayan finally stopped the car.

He turned his head to speak, but upon seeing Xie Baola’s peaceful sleeping visage, he paused.

Her sleeping face bore none of her usual sharpness, nor her usual fierceness—her alluring and delicate brows were like a bold, richly inked painting silently flowing before his eyes.

Seeing she had crossed her arms throughout the journey, he turned up the heat a few degrees.

He didn’t wake her.

He dimmed his phone screen and opened WeChat.

There were many New Year’s greetings from friends.

He glanced at them but didn’t reply.

On Moments, he scrolled past a video posted by Qiao Xi an hour earlier. Without even opening it, the video started playing before him.

The silhouette of Shen Dang in the video was incredibly clear.

Fireworks twinkled in Chen Jiayan’s eyes, his cold features shadowy and indistinct, his emotions obscure.

Chen Jiayan saw Xie Baola’s comment below; his finger paused slightly on the like button, eventually he scrolled on pretending not to see.

After finishing checking Moments, he sent Qiao Xi a New Year’s greeting.

Hoping she’s forever happy.

Chen Jiayan turned the sound off and opened a gaming app.

His tech company had a wide range of projects.

From AI to e-commerce, to game software development.

Currently, the company was planning a new game, not yet launched. He had the app installed on his phone and was still in the testing phase.

Chen Jiayan rested his head on one hand, his posture relaxed, as he looked at the vividly colored screen.

His fingers occasionally moved around on it.

Chen Jiayan glanced beside him, seeing no sign of Xie Baola waking up, he chuckled softly to himself.

Was he here to watch her sleep or to watch the fireworks?

Xie Baola didn’t know how she had fallen asleep.

She had been working on scripts all day at home, overusing her brain, and had come out late at night to find him, dozing off inadvertently.

Xie Baola was suddenly awakened.

The car lights were off, only the streetlamps and the lights from the riverfront faintly illuminated the inside of the car with a soft glow.

Xie Baola instinctively looked towards the driver’s seat.

Empty.

She felt like cursing.

Had Chen Jiayan just left her alone?

Wasn’t he afraid she’d be picked up by bad guys?

"Really a cold-hearted, bad man!" Xie Baola gritted her teeth—"Chen Jiayan!"

The last few words seemed to vent her frustration.

Just then, the car door suddenly opened.

Chen Jiayan’s head peeked in, the light hitting his face just right, his handsome features very pleasing to the eye.

"Were you talking about me?"

Xie Baola, "..."

The car was warm, but when he opened the door, the cold wind outside rushed in.

Xie Baola rubbed her arms, her foxy eyes slightly aggrieved, "So, you haven’t left?"

Scolding him, and he heard it.

Humph.

Indeed, one shouldn’t talk ill behind others.

Chen Jiayan stared at her for a few seconds, then leaned into the car, snuffing out a cigarette in the ashtray.

"If I had left, I wouldn’t have heard you cursing me," he said, his voice neither salty nor bland.

Xie Baola snorted softly, "How was I to know? I thought you just left me here and went."

Chen Jiayan reached over to the back seat to pick up her jacket and handed it to her.

Xie Baola, still a bit groggy, murmured in a girlish tone, "Chen Jiayan, how long have I slept?"

Chen Jiayan mildly replied, "Two hours."

"I slept that long?" Xie Baola was somewhat surprised.

"Why didn’t you wake me up?"

Chen Jiayan avoided her question, instead asking, "Still want to set off fireworks? If not, we’ll head back now."

"Since we’re here, we definitely should set them off before going back."

"Then let’s get out of the car."

Chen Jiayan waited for her to put on the jacket, then pushed open the car door and got out. He went straight to the trunk and took out the fireworks, setting them on the ground.

Xie Baola, bundled up in her jacket, followed behind him.

Chen Jiayan glanced back at her, "Don’t stand here, move back farther."

Xie Baola, "?"

Her temper rose instantaneously, "Why do you care where I stand? What if I like being close to you, is that so wrong?"

Self-righteously.

Chen Jiayan helplessly, "If you stand so close, how can I light the fireworks? Aren’t you afraid to get your face scorched?"

Xie Baola raised her eyebrows, her eyes intrigued, "Aren’t you saying that because you care?"

Xie Baola detected a trace of meticulous tenderness beneath his stern demeanor.

It was a tenderness unique to him.

How wonderful it would be if he showed all that tenderness to her.

Chen Jiayan’s eyes were flat, "No, you’re overthinking it. Isn’t this just common decency?"

Xie Baola didn’t press him further.

He was different around her.

Otherwise, why would he care what she did?

Men, always say one thing and mean another.

Xie Baola turned and walked a few steps forward, then turned back to look at him.

Chen Jiayan took out a lighter to ignite the fuse.

He walked towards Xie Baola, and with a "bang," the fireworks shot up behind him, bursting into colors.

Xie Baola watched him without a moment’s distraction.

At that moment, no fireworks could outshine the man before her.

Chen Jiayan stood beside her, watching the fireworks above slowly settle.

Xie Baola lifted her chin, "Why don’t we set off the rest?"
