Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Emotions Before the Melody is Formed

New Year’s Day holiday was gone, and the whole school was busy decorating the venue for the evening party.

Ribbons, balloons, and busy, laughing classmates filled the school, making it as lively as the New Year.

Fu Ying stared at herself in the mirror, dazed. Dressed in traditional costume, she felt as if she had returned to the palace.

She wondered if he would come today.

Just thinking about meeting him in this outfit made her nervous.

As Fu Ying was contemplating, someone called her from the doorway.

"Fu Ying, your little brother is here."

Fu Ying was startled, and immediately walked out holding her lute.

The young girl was clad in a pink gauzy dress, her long black hair tied up with a ribbon, a jade hairpin inserted in it.

She walked slowly, the light fabric of her dress flowing like glimmers of light.

"Holy smokes! Is this a little lolita?" Ying Haoyang was shocked, circling around Fu Ying, "Holy cow, holy cow!!! For real? Why do I feel like she is an ancient relic?"

Fu Yan was also stunned, thinking his little sister really seemed like a girl from ancient times.

Fu Ying’s eyes were shy, and she quickly glanced at the man.

He was also looking at her.

Shen Liguang stared at the little figure before him, dressed in the traditional costume like the day he had rescued her, holding a lute, looking graceful and charming.

He asked, "You can play the lute?"

Fu Ying’s heart tightened, and she bowed her head.

Feeling a bit nervous, she nodded slightly, holding her lute tightly, "I have a slight understanding of the four arts."

Fu Yan laughed, feeling his little sister was bragging. He intended to tease her, but thinking she rarely had a chance to show off in front of her crush, he couldn’t spoil it.

Fu Yan said with a smile, "Wow, this outfit, definitely the most beautiful act at your school."

Ying Haoyang, surprised, found his voice again, "Little lolita, you really look like a child from ancient times? Every move, how is it so authentic?"

"People rely on clothes, did you know that?" Fu Yan looked at Ying Haoyang, "With your ugly face, if you put on makeup, you could turn into a handsome guy."

"Get out of here, I’m the original handsome guy."

Fu Yan couldn’t help but laugh, "You? Don’t hurt my eyes."

Fu Ying wanted to say something to Shen Liguang, but Fu Yan and Ying Haoyang kept teasing each other, and she couldn’t get a word in.

Behind her, someone shouted, "Fu Ying, it’s your turn."

"Coming."

Fu Ying quickly responded and turned to run.

"Fu Ying, your dress looks really good."

"It’s alright."

Holding the lute with one hand and lifting her dress with the other, Fu Ying ran to the backstage.

Feeling a burning gaze on her back, she suddenly turned around and looked at Shen Liguang.

Shen Liguang lowered his eyes, his gaze obscure, hands tightly clenched.

The prince, the queen mother, the Father Emperor, and the General...

That letter...

Shen Liguang looked up; the girl’s figure had already disappeared into the crowd.

...

"I heard the boss is also going to perform on stage? What will she perform?"

Lin Lishan shook her head, "She didn’t say, I don’t know."

"What kind of performance can the boss have? Breaking stones with her chest? Carrying a jar on her head?"

Li Hanyi laughed, "You think this is a stunt show."

Wen Tian paused his pen, pushing his glasses up with practiced ease, "Don’t underestimate anyone."

Lin Lishan, "Exactly."

Du Yong, a bit embarrassed, touched his nose, "No, I was just curious about what the boss would perform."

"I’m curious too."

Several people in the audience looked forward with anticipation.

Shen Liguang stood behind the crowd, his gaze firmly fixed on the stage.

Fu Ying was nervous backstage.

"Go on, are you chickening out?" Zhou Wei saw her dressed up nicely and thought she was capable, but she seemed to falter before even starting.

Fu Ying looked back at Zhou Wei, then walked towards the stage.

As she sashayed, her delicate wrists peeking through the light fabric, everyone quieted down.

Du Yong stared, "Damn, the boss is... too beautiful..."

Fu Ying sat down in the middle of the stage, dressed in traditional costume, a thin veil covering her face, holding the lute, eyes shy, not only delicate but also elegant.

Her eyes lowered, her slender fingers gently plucking the strings, every frown and smile exuding a gentle charm.

It reminded people of a poem.

Moving the boat closer to invite a meeting, adding wine and re-lighting the lamp to continue the banquet. After many calls, finally she appears—still holding her lute, partially covering her face. Just strumming a few strings before the tune, emotions already begin.

Before the tune... emotions...

Though the audience couldn’t quite understand the piece, it seemed to resonate.

Mainly, the girl on stage looked just like an ancient young lady of a noble family.

Fu Ying lifted her eyes, accidentally catching Shen Liguang’s gaze as he stared at her.

Fu Ying’s heart skipped a beat, and she hurriedly looked down, mistakenly strumming the wrong chord.

Then, she tried to calm down, managing a bitter smile.

A young girl’s troubles, how could she tell him.

"Fu Yan." Ying Haoyang looked at Fu Ying and teased towards Fu Yan, "Not bad, loli."

Fu Yan, with a cigarette in his mouth, laughed: "Just learned it during the summer vacation."

Shen Liguang’s gaze was intense, fixed on the girl.

He slightly lowered his eyes, painfully smiled, and then turned away into the night.

Fu Ying looked up again, towards the direction he was in, but he was already gone.

A wave of loneliness struck her heart; she quickly took her bow, clutching her lute as she left the stage.

...

The city was vibrant with lights and revelry everywhere.

As soon as Xia Jinyun entered the residential area, she heard someone scream.

"The child has fallen!"

Driven by her doctor’s instincts, Xia Jinyun dropped her shoulder bag and ran over.

"Excuse me, please make way."

Xia Jinyun looked up and was startled.

It was the dead of winter, Fu Yi was covered in sweat, about to head upstairs, when he bumped into Xia Jinyun.

"You are a doctor."

Xia Jinyun nodded: "Yes."

"The child is three years old. Fell from the third floor. I’ve already called emergency."

"Okay, I got it."

Xia Jinyun squeezed through the crowd, where the mother was holding her blood-covered son, crying.

Xia Jinyun hurried over: "Don’t hold the child, lay him down gently."

"Trust me, I’m a doctor."

"Please, save my child, please, doctor."

Xia Jinyun frowned, removing the woman’s grasping hands, calming her: "I know, just calm down."

Xia Jinyun carefully examined the wounds, couldn’t feel a pulse in the carotid artery: "No pulse..."

Hearing her child’s heart had stopped, the woman immediately broke down into panicked sobs.

"Doctor, please, I beg you, save my child!"

"Stay calm, let me perform CPR."

Xia Jinyun pressed on the chest repeatedly, dozens of times, but the child didn’t respond.

Xia Jinyun frowned, bent down, started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

CPR, mouth-to-mouth, alternating, the child’s breathing slowly resumed, and the emergency team arrived.

"He has a heartbeat."

"Thank you, thank you."

Watching as the child was taken to the hospital, Xia Jinyun stood up and picked up her bag from the ground.

"Thank you."

Xia Jinyun looked at Fu Yi: "Why say thank you?"

Fu Yi shook his head: "I don’t know, just thank you."

"I am a doctor, saving people is my duty."

Fu Yi smiled: "Saving people is my duty too."

He laughed, turned around, and walked away with his people.

Xia Jinyun watched his retreating figure in a daze.

When she got home and heard her mother chatting with others, she learned that it was the woman’s drunken husband who had first beaten his wife and then threatened to jump off the building with the child.

The rescue team was a step too late; the child was thrown down by the man.

Xia Jinyun sighed, looking down, she noticed an unknown missed call on her phone.

As soon as the call connected, a familiar voice spoke.

"Hello, Miss Xia, this is Fu Yi, could we have dinner together sometime?"
