Chapter 196: Chapter 196 Mistaking Someone for a Brother
Fu Ying froze in place for a long time before she realized what had happened and ran to the area for patients with minor injuries.
A young nurse who recognized her told her that a man had come looking for her and had gone to the area for patients with moderate injuries.
Fu Ying then rushed to the moderate injury area, but by that time, he had already gone over to Zhao Zhi’s side.
That night, they seemed very close, yet also very far apart.
The entire A City had no signal, and they seemed to have lost their way, circling around and missing each other.
Initially, Fu Ying’s heart clenched tightly, but later, she let out a sigh of relief.
Knowing that she was alright was enough.
She looked up at the night sky filled with stars stretched across the entire horizon; under the cold moonlight, Fu Ying took a cup of instant noodles passed to her and muttered a "Thank you."
The young nurse smiled and said, "Don’t mention it, you’ve been a lot of help these days."
Fu Ying: "It was nothing."
"It might have been nothing, but because you took care of the small things, I was able to handle the big things."
Another nurse chimed in: "Yeah, we’re really thankful to have you; otherwise, I wouldn’t have known what to do with those kids today."
Fu Ying forced a smile; having eaten bread and biscuits for several days, now the scent of instant noodles seemed fragrant to her.
Someone asked: "Who was that man looking for you today? He seemed to be in quite a hurry."
Fu Ying thought for a moment and replied with two words.
The nurse was surprised: "You, you’re married? Weren’t you just in university? You don’t look that old, do you?"
"Just got our marriage certificate."
The nurse nodded: "Did you two get to meet then?"
Fu Ying shook her head.
The area was just this big; it seemed like fate was playing with them. They kept searching for each other but in the end, didn’t see each other.
If someone had just quietly stayed put, perhaps, they could have met.
In the quiet of the deep night, some were busy outside, others had slipped into slumber.
Listening carefully, one could still hear the painful groans of the injured.
At night, a car quietly drove away, carrying the wounded in urgent need of treatment.
Fu Ying couldn’t sleep; she came out of the tent and walked along the roadside.
It was once a road, with trees and greenery on both sides, now all that remained was debris.
Her elder brother, Li Guang, was carrying a stretcher with an injured person they had somehow rescued, covered in blood and barely breathing.
"Why are you walking around outside so late at night?"
"Can’t sleep."
"Don’t wander off."
"Mhmm."
Her brother, Li Guang, was very busy, and after a hurried exchange, he left.
Fu Ying returned to the tent, where a few nurses of similar age to her were already resting.
She tiptoed over and lay down to sleep.
Tomorrow was another clear day, and business resumed as usual.
Today, Fu Ying planned to stay in the green zone and not go anywhere, in case he came to look for her.
If she waited in one spot, she wouldn’t miss him.
"Fu Ying, come over and help."
"Oh, okay."
"Can you help deliver these medicines to the moderate and critical injury areas?"
A small cart was packed full of medications, as tall as Fu Ying herself.
The young nurse looked worried: "Can you manage by yourself?"
Fu Ying nodded: "I can."
"Then I’m relying on you."
Fu Ying delivered the medicine to both areas and only returned around noon.
The young nurse pointed to a man’s back and said to her: "That man who was looking for you yesterday came again, it’s him."
Upon hearing this, Fu Ying immediately turned and started looking for him among the people.
Fu Ying ran over, getting closer and closer to him, her steps growing stiffer until finally, they came to a slow halt.
Fu Ying tugged on the clothes of a man behind her, softly, tentatively calling out, "Bro, Big Brother?"
The man turned around, frowning: "Miss, you’ve mistaken again."
It was the same man from yesterday. Fu Ying awkwardly released her grip: "I’m sorry, I’ve mistaken someone for someone else again."
At that moment, Shen Liguang had exchanged a few words with Fu Yi, and when he turned around, he saw his own little thing holding onto another man and calling him "brother".
Shen Liguang couldn’t help but laugh in frustration.
"I’m not even dead yet. What are you doing mistakenly calling someone else ’brother’?"
That voice sounded from behind her. Fu Ying’s body suddenly stiffened.
It took her quite a while to slowly turn around. The man was wearing a black and blue outfit similar to the one she’d mistaken on someone else, complete with a baseball cap.
People were bustling around them, the air stagnant, as though time had frozen for a second.
He was holding a cane, looking extremely disheveled, yet there was a smile on his lips, as bright as today’s sun.
Fu Ying’s nose felt sour, tears shining in her eyes as she buried her head into the man’s embrace.
Her strength was substantial. He, standing on one leg, couldn’t withstand her sudden charge and stumbled half a step back against the emergency car behind him. Holding onto his cane with one hand, and with the other embracing her, he chuckled within his chest, "Trying to knock me dead, are you?"
Fu Ying didn’t speak, her arms tightly wrapped around his waist, her small body trembling in his embrace, crying sorrowfully. Shen Liguang’s heart ached unbearably.
As the midday sun gradually climbed overhead, he rested his chin on top of her head, his hand gently patting her back.
"I almost thought I was dead."
Fu Ying, without a word, at the mention of "death," the tears she was close to stopping started flowing uncontrollably once more.
"Stop crying."
Her tears were like a flood; his heart shattered into pieces.
But the little girl clung tightly to him, her slender body shivering nonstop in his arms, as if to drown him in her tears.
Shen Liguang felt terrible inside; she must have thought he was dead and got terribly frightened.
"Your leg..."
The male doctor who had been treating Shen Liguang’s leg found him and saw a little girl crying in his arms. After a pause, he said, "Do you still want this leg? You had an old injury, and now you’ve got a new one. You shouldn’t be walking around. Rest in the tent. If it weren’t for the fact you’re a firefighter, I wouldn’t bother telling you all this as a disobedient patient. Consider it yourself."
With injured people everywhere, the doctor left as soon as he finished speaking.
Fu Ying lifted her face from his chest, "You’ve got a leg injury?"
Shen Liguang smiled, brushing her red nose with his finger: "It’s a minor injury."
"Let’s get back and rest."
She furrowed her brow and he obediently agreed.
"Alright."
That evening, Fu Ying stayed in his tent. There were many injured; they had no time for niceties or taboos; the primary concern was finding a place to sleep in the harsh environment.
Several people were in one large tent, including an elderly couple who occasionally stared at them, making Fu Ying particularly uncomfortable.
"Give me your hand."
He had a cut on the base of his thumb. Fu Ying held his hand, gently applying medicine.
He kept silent, just watching her quietly.
Fu Ying bowed her head, meticulously disinfecting the wound with a gentle touch.
"Do you have your phone on you?"
"I lost it."
Fu Ying’s eyes reddened, her voice playfully aggrieved: "It’s with me. I saw the divorce agreement you wrote for me."
"I thought I was about to die. It’s better to be a divorcee than a widow," Shen Liguang looked down at her, licking his dry lips, "You’re still young, divorce is bad enough, but to become a widow shortly after getting a marriage certificate, who would want you after that?"
"Then why didn’t you return the wallet to me?"
"That’s something I’d take with me to the grave."
Fu Ying sniffled, "Good thing it wasn’t made of paper, otherwise I would’ve signed it."
"If you signed it, you’d just get married again."
"I’m not the kind to revisit the past,"
"You would."
Fu Ying pursed her lips, ignoring him.
