Chapter 180: Chapter 180 Intimidation

Fu Ying sat on the cabinet by the door, leaning against the wall, gasping for air after being kissed by the man for a long time before she could catch her breath.

"Let’s go." His lips slid to her ear, his voice low and hoarse with desire barely contained.

Fu Ying, clutching the collar of her clothes that had been unbuttoned, blushed and nodded lightly, "Mhm, be careful on your way."

"Call me if anything happens, you can call no matter how late it is."

"Mhm." Her eyes were blushed, embarrassed.

Shen Liguang repeated the words he had said downstairs before leaving.

She rubbed her hot cheeks, straightened her clothes, stepped down from the shoe cabinet, locked the door from the inside, and then went to check the windows, closing each one tightly.

After pulling the curtains, she took her pajamas and entered the bathroom.

Just as the warm water began to wet her body, there was a knock at the door.

The sound was loud, like something heavy striking forcefully.

Fu Ying’s nerves immediately tensed; she quickly washed the bubbles off her body, put on her pajamas, and stepped out of the bathroom.

She carefully approached the peephole while wearing slippers; empty, there was no one at the door.

Just as Fu Ying was about to withdraw her gaze, a dead mouse suddenly dropped into view, hanging on the door, right over the peephole.

Fu Ying let out a scream, stumbling backwards, her face pale, and a layer of fine sweat immediately broke out on her forehead.

The lights in the room suddenly went off, plunging everything into darkness.

Then the pounding on the door began anew.

It was like a death knell from a horror film.

Fu Ying shivered with fear, her body frozen in place, stiffening more and more; her feet felt as if they weighed a thousand pounds, unable to take a single step.

Outside, there was only the sound of knocking; the perpetrator, as if deliberately, alternated between pounding on the door and abruptly stopping.

Fu Ying dared not ask aloud who was at the door; she could only remain silent, pretend there was nobody home.

She turned towards the pitch-dark living room, suddenly overwhelmed with chilling terror, fear seeping from her bones.

The knocking from outside abruptly ceased, the quietude then felt eerily.

Fu Ying took a deep breath and groped her way toward the sofa, searching for her phone.

After a laborious search in the dark, feeling over the sofa and coffee table and every crevice, she couldn’t find her phone.

Fu Ying recalled that she had carelessly placed it on the cabinet by the door when she entered.

Just as she prepared to move closer to the door, the knocking resumed.

Suddenly a series of eerie events made Fu Ying think of that chubby girl.

The door was knocked so loudly that it disturbed the neighboring tenant; Fu Ying heard someone scolding from outside, and the person seemed to have left, the pounding stopping abruptly.

Fu Ying walked to the door, successfully retrieved her phone which had been charged to ten percent and now only had one percent battery left; she had just managed to dial Shen Li’s number when someone outside actually began to speak.

At that moment, Shen Li was at home preparing a herbal concoction for Li Ruolan; hearing his phone ring, he picked it up without thinking and saw it was Fu Ying, sliding his finger to answer.

There was no sound on the phone, and then the call dropped.

Shen Li stared at his phone, tried dialing back, but heard a notification that the phone was turned off.

Shen Li turned off the stove, stood up, grabbed his coat, and prepared to leave.

Seeing him rushing out, Li Ruolan asked, "What happened? Is there some trouble?"

"I don’t know, going to have a look."

Racing in his car, Shen Li felt agitated while waiting at a red light, stuffing a cigarette into his mouth.

He hadn’t taken two puffs before he arrived at the apartment.

All around was quiet, only the sound of his footsteps.

The small high-rise had no elevator; Shen Li entered the building, looking back once he was inside the stairwell, but there was no one in sight.

He went upstairs, approached the door, where a freshly dead mouse was still dripping blood, swaying in the wind that poured in.

Shen Liguang frowned, put the cigarette between his fingers into his mouth, reached out to snap the string, and took another glance at the stairwell.

Under the overly bright lights, the corridor was eerily silent, the window at the end of the hallway was open, and a breeze blew through, making the prank seem like a real haunting.

Shen Liguang withdrew his gaze, fished out his keys from his pocket to unlock the door, and the room was pitch black, with only a bit of light from the hallway entering.

The living room was like an endless void of darkness, the house so quiet it seemed as though there was no one, and even when Shen Liguang reached for the switch, there was no response.

He turned on the flashlight on his phone, illuminating the living room, which was empty.

As he called out for Fu Ying, he pushed open the bedroom door.

The girl under the blankets was curled up into a ball, only cautiously popping her head out upon hearing Shen Liguang’s call.

Shen Liguang hurried to the bed and sat down.

"What scared you like this?"

Fu Ying swallowed, her little face still pale, and kept burrowing into his embrace.

Shen Liguang wrapped an arm around her, letting Fu Ying sit on his lap, and looked down at her face in the light of the phone.

"It’s just a prank."

Fu Ying nodded, her voice hoarse: "I know, I even know who did it."

"I’ll take care of it." Shen Liguang’s eyes darkened as he took a drag, then stubbed the half-burnt cigarette on the table.

"Can you handle it? With legs attached to her body, she comes whenever she wants." Fu Ying, thinking about what had just happened, felt aggrieved, and her eyes turned red as she sulked in his arms.

In the end, she lay on his shoulder and let slip a curse with a sob: "That just scared the hell out of me..."

Sometimes curses aren’t meant to scold people; they’re meant to express emotions.

Fu Ying only realized that now.

"Your swearing sounds like you’re cooing." Shen Liguang couldn’t help but laugh, planting a kiss on her cheek, "Haven’t calmed down yet?"

Fu Ying snuffled and rubbed against his coat in retaliation.

"I want to go home."

"Okay."

Without even changing clothes, she wrapped herself in a down jacket over her nightgown, too scared to stay, hastily wanting to go back, wearing slippers on her feet, her pale ankles exposed to the air.

Shen Liguang held her hand, carrying the string with the mouse in the other.

"A real dead mouse?"

"Mhm." Shen Liguang responded, checking the circuit breaker, which had been flipped off.

Seeing his frown, Fu Ying asked nervously: "What’s wrong?"

"Nothing. The breaker was just flipped off." Shen Liguang squeezed her hand a little tighter, his eyes deepening in the dark night, "Don’t come to the apartment for the next few days."

Fu Ying nodded, still spooked, involuntarily glancing back.

Behind her, the orange pendant light in the building’s hallway swayed in the wind, creaking, casting shadows flickering on and off, resembling a scene straight out of a ghost film.

Fu Ying leaned closer to Shen Liguang, her fingers gripping tightly onto the man beside her, virtually melting him with her small gestures.

"Were you scared to death just now?"

He held her hand to his mouth and breathed on it, gently rubbing it.

The little girl’s hand was ice cold; he warmed it in his palm.

The little girl muttered, "Not at all."

Shen Liguang raised an eyebrow, a hint of humor in his tone: "I don’t believe it, who was crying just now?"

In the cold night, the champagne-colored streetlights spread across the avenue, the girl stubbornly turned her head away, not paying him any further attention.
