Chapter 114 Cold Hands
Chapter 114: Chapter 114 Cold Hands
In the evening, Fu Ying ran over with a quilt to sleep with her grandmother.
They talked quite late into the night.
By almost ten o’clock, the old lady was still spirited, recounting life during their era, which wasn’t as prosperous as now and lacked the glitz and glamour of nightlife.
Fu Ying listened quietly, occasionally agreeing with what was said.
Her grandmother mentioned the story of her and her grandfather again.
She never tired of telling it, and Fu Ying never tired of listening.
When she finished, she would laugh shyly as if the events of ten years ago had occurred just a second earlier.
Sadly, her grandfather had passed away a long time ago.
As Fu Ying listened, she slowly closed her eyes.
Unable to sleep, her grandmother sang a lullaby to soothe her.
Her grandmother’s palms lightly patted her, and soon, she drifted off to sleep.
Her grandmother looked at her and smiled.
With old hands, she gently touched Fu Ying’s little face, eyes filled with tenderness.
In the middle of the night, Fu Ying’s phone suddenly vibrated.
She woke with a start, glanced at the screen, then looked back at her grandmother.
Finding her sound asleep, she snuck out to answer the call.
The night was deadly quiet, so much that any little noise seemed audible; Fu Ying went into her own bedroom and answered the phone.
"Sorry for disturbing your rest again," his voice was very low.
In the silence of the night, Fu Ying dared not speak loudly, whispering softly, "Not at all."
Fu Ying stood by the window, looking down to see him standing below in the cold wind, leaning against his car and smoking.
Fu Ying asked, "Brother, where are you?"
"At home."
"Then how come I can see your car downstairs?"
Shen Liguang looked up towards the girl’s room.
Fu Ying was just standing at the window, looking down.
Shen Liguang couldn’t help but smile: "I just wanted to see you; don’t come out, it’s cold."
"But, I want to go down."
Sometimes, Fu Ying wasn’t so obedient.
Shen Liguang was about to speak when the girl’s figure disappeared from the window, and then she was seen coming out of the front door.
Before he could react, the little girl wrapped her arms around his waist.
She was petite in stature, and hugging him was somewhat endearing.
Shen Liguang put out his cigarette.
"Get in the car."
Fu Ying’s hands were cold; Shen Liguang turned on the heater and held her hands in his.
"Why are your hands so cold?"
Fu Ying shook her head: "I don’t know."
"Wear more clothes."
"I rushed out just now; I usually wear a lot."
Shen Liguang lowered his head, massaging her hands, very gently, very tenderly: "I’m going to head back soon, why did you come down?"
Fu Ying leaned closer to him, embracing him, not saying a word.
The atmosphere in the car stagnated, filled only with their breathing sounds.
Shen Liguang kissed her hands: "Why the silence? Are you unhappy?"
Fu Ying’s body slowly tensed, she shook her head: "No."
Shen Liguang could hear the grievance in her tone.
It was quite distressing to listen to.
"I’m free the day after tomorrow, is there somewhere you’d like to go?"
"Let’s watch a movie, it’s not cold."
Shen Liguang nodded: "Then I’ll pick you up when it’s time, you should go upstairs now, you’ll be discovered soon."
Fu Ying got up from his embrace, gazing at him for a while, her eyes growing deeper.
Then, she leaned forward and kissed him.
Shen Liguang furrowed his brow, held her shoulders, and did not let her pull away.
Fu Ying rested her arms on his shoulders, her breathing became slightly heavy.
Shen Liguang suddenly let her go: "Go upstairs."
Fu Ying, with a flushed face and a husky voice, said: "Alright, goodnight, brother."
"Goodnight."
Shen Liguang waited until she entered the door, he sat at the doorway for a while before leaving.
Fu Ying waited for him to leave before returning to bed.
...
The winter vacation arrived, and Wen Tian came back.
It’s been a long time since we last met, and he’s become even less talkative.
Fu Ying was a bit bored and squatted in the yard to build a snowman. He helped her.
Fu Ying turned her head to look at him: "You’ve become more and more gloomy."
Wen Tian looked away from her face and opened his mouth: "I, I don’t know what to say."
"You can talk about your life at University B."
Wen Tian paused: "Studying."
"Nothing else?"
Wen Tian shook his head: "That’s it."
Fu Ying thought for a moment: "Tell me, are you the younger brother, or am I the younger sister?"
It took a moment for Wen Tian to catch on, then he understood.
She was asking, if their parents formed a blended family, who would be older between the two of them.
"I should be the older brother."
Fu Ying frowned: "But what if I was the older sister?"
"Your birth month isn’t earlier than mine."
"That’s not necessarily the case."
Wen Tian smiled and didn’t speak further.
Inside the house, Wen Qing watched the two people in the yard and sighed: "Tian Tian has never been much of a talker since he was young. Since he came back this time, he’s spoken even less. It’s my fault for pushing him too hard with his studies in the past. His personality is completely different from when he was little."
Fu Mingchuan reassured her: "It’s fine, look at how chatty Yingying is; she keeps talking to him."
"I’m worried Tian Tian might have a psychological illness, thinking of finding him a psychologist."
Fu Mingchuan frowned: "Don’t talk nonsense when the child is fine."
Fu Ying waited and waited, and Shen Liguang came to pick her up.
Shen Liguang: Turn right out the door, a hundred meters.
Fu Ying replied: Okay.
Fu Ying looked up and saw his car parked on the side of the road. She glanced around and saw nobody nearby, so she quickly got into the vehicle.
"What movie do you want to watch?"
Fu Ying shook her head: "I don’t know, anything."
Fu Ying looked outside and realized they were on the road to his house.
"Aren’t we going to the cinema?"
"The cinema is closed for the New Year; we’re going to my place."
Fu Ying grew anxious: "Let’s not, I don’t want to watch a movie anymore."
Shen Liguang: "What are you afraid of?"
"Not scared, just feel it’s a bit different, different from the feeling of going to my brother’s house before."
He asked loudly: "How is it different?"
"I can’t put it into words." Fu Ying said, pulling at the woolen coat she wore,
Shen Liguang chuckled: "My mom isn’t home; she went back to her hometown."
"That’s good..."
Fu Ying found it odd to go back to his house with him. He led her into the room and even closed the door.
Shen Liguang saw her blush and laughed lightly: "I brought you to my room because there’s a projector, and I closed the door just wanting to turn on the air conditioning."
"Oh." Fu Ying touched her nose awkwardly.
"Should I just pick a random movie?"
"Mhm."
He searched on his phone and then connected to the projector.
Fu Ying looked around his room.
It has been a few years since her last visit.
She was in her second year of high school at the time.
Fu Ying saw a family photo of four on the desk.
She had never known much about his family situation, but it seemed like he had always lived with his aunt.
In the photo, there was a little boy, probably his younger brother?
Shen Liguang turned around and saw her staring at the photo, lost in thought.
"Come here."
Fu Ying turned around, and Shen Liguang waved at her.
She walked over to him, just as obedient as that fifteen-year-old girl she used to be.
"You pick one."
Fu Ying pointed at a horror film: "This one."
"Are you sure?"
Fu Ying nodded: "Mhm."
Initially, Fu Ying thought his asking if she was sure was out of concern that she might be scared, but as the movie started playing, she realized she had misunderstood.
Modern movies always seem to include a bit of adult content.
Fu Ying turned her face away, looking elsewhere.
