Chapter 368: Chapter 368: Emotions Are Beyond Your Control
In the hospital room, Lin Qian walked to the bedside and sat down, her lips curling slightly as she looked at Qinglan.
She didn’t know why Qinglan had called her in, but it likely had something to do with Moran.
"Qinglan."
"Hmm, Lin Qian, I’m really sorry."
Qinglan looked at Lin Qian, her tear-streaked eyes still red, yet her expression had already calmed down.
She was offering an apology.
Lin Qian froze for a moment, then smiled faintly, "Qinglan, you haven’t done anything wrong, so why are you apologizing to me?"
Hearing this, Qinglan’s fingers curled slightly, and a flash of guilt crossed her face. "Because of me, you and my brother have found yourselves under public scrutiny. I made you the subject of others’ ridicule."
She truly felt ashamed facing them.
However, Lin Qian would eventually marry her brother, and she didn’t want Lin Qian to harbor resentment towards her.
Even though she cared for her brother, she didn’t want to ruin their relationship.
All she wanted was to bless them.
Seeing Qinglan’s distressed appearance, Lin Qian pressed her lips together and reached out to take her hand.
"Qinglan, this isn’t your fault. Feelings are not something you can control, and I understand how you feel. Compared to many others, you’ve done well enough. You haven’t obsessively pursued something that doesn’t belong to you, nor have you sabotaged anyone’s relationship. You’ve been rational, and you’re kind, Qinglan. I truly admire you and like you."
The gentle words carried a sense of closeness.
Her liquid eyes were filled with sincerity and encouragement.
Qinglan’s heart couldn’t quite describe the emotions it held—a mix of relief and faint comfort.
She was genuinely happy that the brother she loved had encountered Lin Qian, and she sincerely wished them well.
"Thank you, Lin Qian. I like you a lot too."
Feeling her mood lighten, Qinglan grasped Lin Qian’s hand in return, her almond-shaped eyes shining brightly.
The two exchanged a smile, and Lin Qian shifted the topic.
"By the way, I happened to overhear Li’s conversation with you just now. Congratulations—you’re going to be a bride!"
Upon hearing this, Qinglan’s smile faltered slightly.
Her lips eventually lifted again, albeit slowly. "Well, I guess I’m lucky. I was originally an orphan, but because my mom brought me into the Yin Family, I led a fortunate life and even met Nangong Li—a handsome and wealthy man. It’s just that..."
Qinglan paused, her gaze lowering to conceal a trace of resignation.
"The Nangong Family is also highly prominent. With this latest news spreading like wildfire, it’s likely that everyone in high society has heard the rumors. Li wants to marry me, but there will inevitably be resistance from his family. I’m really scared of bringing trouble into his life."
Earlier, she had impulsively agreed to Nangong Li’s proposal.
Now that her mind had settled, she was beginning to have second thoughts.
Under these circumstances, Nangong Li’s proposal to her would surely make him a subject of ridicule—people would mock him for "taking over someone else’s mess." They were bound to view him with disdain.
She felt she owed him and was deeply uneasy.
Watching the faint sorrow on Qinglan’s face, Lin Qian smiled and comforted her.
"Qinglan, don’t overthink it. I feel that Li is a man with firm resolve. If he’s decided to marry you, he’s surely well-prepared. Just relax and enjoy being his bride-to-be."
Nangong Li may seem like a playful philanderer, but in her eyes, he was absolutely devoted to Qinglan.
As for those outside rumors about him, there was little certainty to the truth behind them.
Regarding familial objections, the Yin Family was a respected household, and with their backing Qinglan, combined with Nangong Li’s assertiveness, it shouldn’t be much of an issue.
Upon hearing Lin Qian’s reassuring words, Qinglan lifted the corners of her lips slightly.
Her gaze landed on Lin Qian, and she teased, "Lin Qian, you’re great at comforting people. When will you officially become my sister-in-law so we can all celebrate your wedding with my brother?"
"Sister-in-law?"
Lin Qian’s face flushed instantly, "Ahem, Qinglan, weren’t we talking about you and Li just now? Why drag me into this? Uh, are you hungry? Thirsty? I’ll go buy you something to eat."
"Sis-in-law, avoiding the topic won’t help! Quick, tell me—when are you planning to marry my brother? The Yin Family has a rule: only once my brother gets married can I tie the knot myself."
"Huh? The Yin Family actually has such a rule? Qinglan, you must be joking with me."
"..."
The two bantered lightheartedly, and outside, two tall men overheard bits of their conversation. Seeing Qinglan’s face brighten with a smile, they exchanged glances before Nangong Li pushed the door open with a grin, holding a tray of food.
"Now, ladies, after all this chatting, are you hungry? It’s time for dinner."
Judging by their lively conversation, there was no need to worry about any lingering tension between them.
"Dinner already?"
Lin Qian glanced at the time and suddenly realized.
Time had flown—it was already 8 p.m.
Her stomach was indeed grumbling like an empty city fortress.
However...
Lin Qian pressed her lips together and cast a glance at Moran, "Moran, I..."
She had hurried over and had no idea where Ziyang was at the moment.
"Let’s eat first. Han Chen has already taken Ziyang downstairs to Chu Yelin’s room. I’ll take you there afterward."
Moran, as if knowing what Lin Qian was thinking, spoke in a gentle tone.
"Exactly, Sis-in-law! No rush now—sit down and have your meal."
Nangong Li laid out all the dishes, expertly scooping a bowl of soup and personally handing it to Qinglan.
"Qinglan, this is a bone broth I specially had the chefs from the Imperial Garden prepare. Come, let me feed you."
Qinglan glanced at the cheerful man, her gaze flickering momentarily toward Moran, who was already seated on the sofa. She bit her lip and said nothing.
Nangong Li’s smile dimmed slightly, seemingly understanding her thoughts.
The public scandal earlier must have left Qinglan particularly sensitive to Moran’s attitude.
At this moment, Lin Qian, who had just been pulled down by Moran to sit beside him, noticed Qinglan’s lack of response and immediately glanced at the bed.
Seeing Qinglan’s expression, her almond eyes sparkled.
Her slender fingers tugged at the man’s shirt sleeve next to her, and when he looked her way, she winked at him before glancing at Qinglan again.
This man—could he be any more oblivious?
It wouldn’t hurt to say a few words to Qinglan to dissolve some of the unnecessary awkwardness, right?
Moran had been completely engulfed in his thoughts about Lin Qian, his heart entirely focused on her, leaving little room to think about anyone else.
But, as Lin Qian blinked those expressive eyes and hinted at him with her gaze, he instantly understood her meaning.
His lips curved upward slightly, his dark eyes sparkling with a hint of amusement.
His soon-to-be wife was so thoughtful.
Moran’s slender hand enveloped Lin Qian’s petite one, as he rose and led her to the bedside.
Qinglan looked at him, her gaze flickering briefly as her nose began to sting once again.
She hurriedly turned her head away, biting her lip in silence.
A soft sigh sounded.
Something warm rested on her shoulder, and the man’s low voice spoke from beside her.
"Qinglan, as my sister, you must be strong. Never pull something so reckless again, or I’ll be sure to take it out on Nangong Li instead."
Nangong Li: "..."
