Chapter 791: 397. Liberation Theology
"Reincarnation..."
Alfen’s eyes flickered:
"Then my family..."
"As long as you are willing to practice the truths of Gio Zieou, your entire family can enjoy the chance of reincarnation."
The old man said earnestly:
"I am not forcing you, child. You can stay here for a few more days, until you have rested well. It is alright if you don’t want to think about it. However, we will be leaving soon, so we won’t be able to provide much food for you."
"You are leaving? Where else are you going to go? Everywhere outside of here is just desolate disaster ruins!"
Alfen couldn’t help but ask.
In his view, it was a waste of medical supplies, food, and manpower for them to venture into the disaster area—it was simply heading towards death!
Yet the elder merely said indifferently:
"We are heading north."
"North... you mean The Capital?"
"In this world of chaos and starving corpses, at a time like this, the Kingdom Parliament remains indifferent, the Knights of the High Table refuse to emerge from their sanctuary, completely neglecting the lives of Civilians—this kingdom doesn’t treat you and me as human, why should we remain loyal to them!"
The old man spoke with fervor:
"If the Sovereign is heartless, don’t blame the Civilian for being unrighteous. If the Kingdom is unwilling to save its people, the Deities are willing to! If the Kingdom is unwilling to relieve the disaster, our Church will go to the most dangerous places! The knights of the High Table indulge in their wealth and glory, colluding with the Void, not sparing a thought for the lives of the Civilians. What use is such a cruel and unjust kingdom and its sovereigns!"
As soon as the old man finished his declaration, the refugees who were being treated in the hospital ward all turned to look. The old man raised his hand and shouted with an infectious voice:
"The Sovereign is unrighteous, the Council is unrighteous! Is there anyone who will seek justice for us?"
"We are all children of the Kingdom, all persecuted by the Void Invasion. Why should the High Table and the lordly knights have double standards for life, while we commoners, scavenging in the dirt, have to starve to death?"
"The upper echelons of the Kingdom have never seen us as equals; they call us Outcasts! To them, we are mere numbers and labor, we own nothing, and we still have to be chased and devoured by the Void! Is this fair? Only beasts would tolerate the killing of their own kind, but we humans are the spirit of all beings, and only the divine have the right to decide on a person’s worth!"
"The King does not have that right! The Kingdom Parliament does not have that right! The leeching Hierarchy of the Kingdom do not deserve it!"
"Are you content with this? How can human life be decided by those who are merely humans themselves, who rely on power and the achievements of their ancestors? Why should everything you produce from your labor be taken away by the nobles of the Kingdom?"
The old man swung his arm in a gesture:
"We have never even contemplated betrayal."
"Thankfully, the Deities above! Gio Zie under his crown has told us: we must take back what belongs to us!"
"God grants a soul to men, and the kings of mankind have no right to take away the sweat and blood of the populace!"
"This is not a country of the kings and noble lords, it is our country! Divine Fate guides us forward, granting us the right of life and death. Mere Mortal kings, how dare they usurp the majesty of the divine!"
"Yet the Kingdom Parliament is stubborn in its ways; their arrogance and disdainful attitude have abandoned the children of the earth, preferring to curry favor with the foreign invaders from the Void rather than to provide aid to you."
"However, the Deities are infinitely merciful, Gio Zie under his crown will forever welcome every Believer!"
"Since the upper echelons have abandoned us, let them fall! Reclaim the country that belongs to us!"
"If those rebellious Demons who defy the divine will dare to resist, then let the Kingdom burn! In the flames, we will break away from the false and establish the Divine Country upon the earth!"
The old man shouted loudly, all the past Suffering, bitterness, and sorrow, at this moment transformed into fuel for anger.
The crowd’s fervor surged to new heights, and someone shouted:
"Shatter the illusion! The Divine Country on earth!"
The next moment, like a pressure cooker exploding, voices instantly burst forth from the tent, continuously circling overhead.
"Long live Gio Zieou! The deity who shatters delusions guides us forward!"
"The Kingdom is heartless, casting us aside, so why should we still recognize that damned Council? Overthrow it!"
"Those knights shine in their dazzling armor, while I can only barely survive on the flesh of my children—they are all due to the inaction of the knights! We are the majority—it’s they who have taken what rightfully belongs to us!"
"Our land has been invaded by the Void, our lives bloodsucked by the Kingdom, everyone is in unbearable pain, isn’t it the same for all people on this planet? As long as we unite under the banner of Gio Zie, under His Excellency’s flag, this country is ours! Even the deities have said so!"
"Shatter the illusion! Shatter the illusion! Shatter the illusion!"
Alfen stared blankly at it all, his dreams of becoming a kingdom knight crumbling bit by bit.
Amidst the crowd’s outraged sentiment, Alfen’s mindset gradually shifted. He couldn’t immediately accept faith in the deities, but his resentment towards the Kingdom and knights reached a peak at that moment.
He gently tugged at the old man’s clothes and, as the other turned his head, revealing deep blue eyes, Alfen opened his mouth, made up his mind, and said:
"...On my way here, I heard a curious anecdote. I think it might be useful to you, but I’m a bit scared to say it out aloud... I, I don’t know if I should."
"Don’t be afraid, child," the old man said soothingly. "Tell me, what do you know?"
"...It’s about the Fermi Research Institute. While avoiding the Substance Rain, I overheard a conversation among some institute personnel."
Alfen said:
"They were saying that the knights of the Kingdom Parliament were assisting the institute’s staff in tracking the Substance Rain. The purpose is to capture someone called..."
He paused, his brow furrowed in thought, then said:
"It seems like, it’s someone named ’Zhi Xiang’."
The old man nodded slightly, indicating for him to continue.
"They say the Knights of the High Table place great importance on ’Zhi Xiang’, believing that if they catch Zhi Xiang, they can control the Substance Rain, drive away the Void with it, and also strictly control the movement of civilians through the rain, trapping us forever in fixed areas to toil and farm. It seems to be very secretive, and I was so scared, I immediately ran away. If the institute finds out I did this, they might kill me..."
As Alfen thought more and more about it, his anger grew, and he blurted out, not fearing any pursuit anymore:
"Those institute people seemed to be headed to a place called ’The High Tower’. There, they are entertaining the knights of the High Table. If you have the ability, just go there and give those bastards a lesson they won’t forget!"
"We are only mortals and have no right to decide their fate."
The old man stood up slowly, handed something to the youth, and turned to leave:
"Only God has the right to decide the fate of mortals."
Long after the old man had left, Alfen looked down at the heavy object in his arms and almost choked.
It was a glint of pure, untarnished gold.
A Gold Coin, terrifyingly pure!
Alfen was nearly scared witless.
In the distance, he could faintly hear a voice echoing through the air:
"And I am God."
