Chapter 759: 368.Redemption

[Record Log: 10079]

January—Damn, who even remembers the exact date and time anymore!

Five years, it has been five years! And I’m still required to log this damn diary, it really never ends!

But, who is to blame when this is to make up for the mistakes Dr. Chen Wenjing made? After Dr. Chen Wenjing suffered from the Void Infection, his name, gender, country, ethnicity, even his abilities, all vanished, and we are still unable to piece together his entirety.

Though the Void Infection, in name, devours everything, in the world there is no uncaused ’disappearance’ and ’appearance’; in fact, most of the attributes stripped from those infected by the Void are lying right beside them.

Clearly, The High Tower has always restricted people from learning these truths. Well, I can’t blame them because confronting the Void is so despairing, they obviously do not want the common folk to get involved in such endeavors.

The reason the research institute studies the Void is for profit

—That is a lie, we lovers, adore humanity more than anything else.

For humanity, we are willing to sacrifice everything, even humans themselves.

Alright, enough grumbling, time to work.

I looked at the last log from five years ago:

"January 5th / 9:20 AM: Mr. Enver Su was very satisfied with our recent performance, offering us a new sponsorship; the range of the Void Fallen Zone is expanding, and the number of Blockade Bodies is beginning to increase."

Ha, I remember this entry, V-780—known as ’Leoz’ the Blockade Body. His code name was Succubus.

Back then, it was regrettable, I hadn’t had much interaction with him before he was abducted by Knight Merid Fenny from the Kingdom Parliament.

But fortunately, it was not long before the Kingdom Parliament clarified the misunderstanding, and the ’King’ even personally clarified the ’truth’ about ’Merid Fenny’.

’This person died 40 years ago.’ —The ’King’ stated.

At least, in the end, the misunderstanding was resolved, and the Kingdom Parliament specifically arranged for knights to capture V-780 ’Succubus’ Leoz.

But unfortunately, in the end, we still didn’t find V-780.

Yet, that didn’t mean we found nothing at all.

V-780’s skin had been completely stripped away by the Void, leaving behind a lifeless body—but it hadn’t died, which provided us many opportunities.

It is quite easy to understand this condition:

After being infected by the Void, V-780’s ’name’, ’soul’, ’nationality’, ’memory’, ’gender’, ’body’, ’appearance’, ’extraordinary abilities’, ’personality’, and all other ’attributes’ had been stripped away, just like the initial Dr. Chen Wenjing, with most scattered around and we haven’t fully collected them yet.

The phenomenon of Blockade Bodies being infected, it’s the first time we’ve observed this in many years.

V-780’s ’name’ and ’life’ might have been taken away by others, truly regrettable. Without a life or soul, we couldn’t produce an Elite Elijah, especially the most precious ’Essence’ Elijah, which must involve a soul.

Why is ’Essence’ more valuable than ordinary Elijah?

Ordinary peanut oil of course isn’t worth much, but if you were to extract oil from the seeds of strawberries, that’s another matter...

This is now more evident than ever that ordinary Elijahs can be crudely made in any rural workshop as long as you have a Blockade Body, but Essence Elijahs must be obtained from clean, uncontaminated, and intact-soul Blockade Bodies.

Losing V-780—losing ’Essence’ Elijah—constitutes a heavy loss.

Originally, this should be called a significant failure, Leoz’s soul escaped, and his body is just an empty shell, of no use.

But soon, we discovered that wasn’t quite the case.

When we were analyzing Leoz’s body, we were astonished to discover that within this body, there existed a unique structural combination, some genes seemed like natural codes, and after marvelous arrangement, they were actually able to distort reality and physical laws.

How profound, if developed to its ultimate potential, it might be referred to as... omnipotent.

However, this power differs from Elijah, it seems unable to be extracted for energy use, more like a kind of authentication, a license, or perhaps, a mandate, we temporarily call it a Mandate.

Mandate can only reside in someone else’s body, being effective through the host, this is rather interesting, come to think of it, real political power, even if it exists, seems also only to manifest attached to an individual.

In order to fully understand the rules and limits of Mandate, to better serve humanity, the research institute has decided to initiate an unprecedented project.

This could be the beginning of a large-scale ecosystem evolution.

However, the upper echelons of the research institute vaguely felt that the Blockade Bodies showed no aversion to the emergence of the Mandate, and instead, some Blockade Bodies displayed surprise and delight, as though they knew the origin of the "Mandate." When we questioned further, they sealed their lips and refused to disclose any information.

This type of behavior was overly uniform, leading the top management to suspect that these humanoid Blockade Bodies—most of whom claimed to hail from the "Layer Abyss"—seemed as if they had entered into a pact with some entity, refusing to reveal any information about the "Layer Abyss."

Hmm... a unified attitude, a unified refusal to disclose the existence above the starry sky, a unified knowledge of the knowledge above starry realms.

This truly was intriguing,

Such obvious common traits easily led one to think of that entity.

Yes, that one, the source of the Substance Rain.

It is worth mentioning that when Leoz was taken away by "Merid Fenny," it also rained Substance Rain along the way, covering their tracks.

Although it always hid its true identity, never openly revealing itself, through bits and pieces, it was always possible to detect its range of activity.

That was "Substance Rain,"

Wherever it passed, the Substance Rain would fall, purifying the human world and dispelling the Void.

As for the master of the Substance Rain, there was no need to bother with it for now, as the Fermi Research Institute had already picked up some clues.

The current focus should first shift to Leoz, as the Mandate might become our new research direction for a long time in the future.

Compared to the humanoid Blockade Bodies that clammed up about the "Layer Abyss" and "Mandate," some entities from the Void seemed somewhat resistant, and several of our deployed laboratories had been attacked by the Void.

This made things difficult... Aside from the Capital, there were almost no places on Dragon Satellite completely isolated from the Void.

Just as the research was about to be halted, perhaps due to the belief that heaven never seals off all the exits, a lady who identified herself as "Ensi" or "N4" found us.

"Would you like to make a trade?"

Lady Ensi said with a chuckle:

"I know a place, a relic of the former dynasty, far from the Capital and far from the Grey Mist Forest, absolutely safe, where the Void cannot penetrate."

Of course, this was not aid without cost.

The lady, whose name sounded like "N4," demanded that we cease the search for Leoz’s soul and also join this experiment, sharing the data.

We agreed.

Even children know that the premise of fighting over a cake is to first make the cake. N4’s demands were not too excessive, and we could afford to play it slow, gradually discussing the matter.

Soon, a new experimental base was established in the underground catacombs of the Ebyssian Dynasty. We set up a comprehensive surveillance system in the urban area, and used a Cognition Filter—this device came from the Void and could create a type of cognition filter based on Nihilism, allowing people to gradually sink into chaos and become slaves of Nihilism, without being completely consumed by the Void.

The fence was completed, the arena was built, and now, it was time to select some suitable units to be thrown into the pool to properly test the power of the Mandate.

We had originally planned to rely on death-row prisoners, but after the V-780 incident, the Kingdom’s attitude seemed to have changed, no longer unconditionally providing us with human resources—practice which required the consumption of death-row prisoners.

Fortunately, there was a village nearby the relic, with some young, healthy people free from Void pollution.

How should we attract these young people in a reasonable manner?

At this point, Dr. Chen Wenjing provided a very good case study.

We had more than just Leoz’s body; in fact, Leoz’s personality, appearance, ethnicity, gender, hobbies, and other Attributes were all in our hands, only lacking the soul and name, which we couldn’t combine together.

But what if Leoz’s Attributes were transferred to these young people?

Based on the effects of the Void, the stripped Attributes would exhibit aggregating characteristics.

Lively young people, infected by elements of Leoz, would soon crave to gather together, beginning to keenly engage in activities and exchange ideas.

If relying solely on this aspect were insufficient, we had been using Leoz’s "appearance" to create an Artificial Human since a few years ago, crafting a persona of an "amnesiac handsome man" for him.

In this way, by embedding him into this group of children and capturing people’s hearts with his outstanding appearance, he would properly guide them to come openly to the underground research institute.

Subsequently, they would be implanted with Void Filters, each receiving a transplant of some of Leoz’s Mandate genes.

We would conduct comparative group experiments to screen out which aspect of Leoz’s traits had the greatest impact on the "Mandate."
