Chapter 757: 366. Mystery
Clang!
Polina stepped into the air and fell from the top of the decrepit building, landing solidly on the ground. Her forearm hit the ground first and, amidst the sound of broken pottery shattering, her wrist announced its fracture amidst the noise.
"Uh—"
Biting back pain, Polina struggled to her feet. She didn’t have time to indulge in her agony because the entity pursuing her would arrive at any moment.
Bang!
The walls of the ancient residence crumbled instantly under the force. Dulin’s eyes were blood-red, his body exuded an aura that made one’s bloodline tremble—this was a bone-deep fear of a natural predator. He looked down at the staggering Polina, parted his lips, and said deliberately:
"Found · you · haha—"
Polina scrambled through a window, stepping on bones from the epoch of the Ebyssian Dynasty, ignoring the injuries on her shins. She clenched her teeth and hurried through the tight spaces, utilizing military skills her grandfather taught her to nimbly escape through the narrow lanes.
As she fled in panic, a question arose in Polina’s mind:
’Why are these people... so terrifying?’
It was as if, since arriving here, every one of them had changed.
Polina emerged from the gap between the alleys, sighing in relief.
Swish-crack!
Wings of aurora light instantly illuminated the dusky view. Accompanied by a neighing sound like that of warhorses, a figure plummeted before her. Polina hastily turned and rolled away, dodging the splattering intense flames and quickly traversed the path next to her.
’Again, that unexplained power, just like the Blockade Bodies—’
She ran a few steps along the path when she suddenly heard voices:
"Where do you think you’re going?"
"This isn’t a good place to walk."
The twin sisters Jessie and Lixi stood side by side, blocking her way.
Polina’s heart tightened, and she nearly failed to stop in time to avoid colliding with them.
Clap!
Jessie and Lixi joined hands and arched their bodies backward, and images of angels and demons arose from their delicate frames.
"Gomorrah~" Jessie murmured, her eyes pitch black.
"Sodom!" Lixi exclaimed, her eyes golden.
The sulfuric flame-wielding angel immediately scattered a field of flames. Polina, nimble in form, leaped into a drainage ditch at the side. However, a shadow demon agile as a cheetah sprang from the shadows, pressing Polina’s head down toward the ground just as she was about to land, smashing her against the wall.
Pop!
At that moment, ripples suddenly shimmered through the wall, and a tall, slim youth with blue palms and eyes radiating light stepped out from the flat surface of the wall. With a light slap—Gomorrah was instantly exiled from the three-dimensional world.
"She’s mine, sorry."
The youth gave a slight smile, turned to Polina who had fallen to the ground, and extended his blue palm:
"Give me your Essence Alige—"
Thud!
Before he had finished speaking, a sharp stone pillar smashed down from above his head, piercing through his neck and pinning his spine to the ground, leaving him dangling back and forth like a rag doll.
Polina struggled to rise but immediately heard someone in the smoke shouting:
"Polina!"
"Is that... Xiven’s voice?"
Polina looked up in surprise, only to see Xiven’s frail figure approaching through the dust. Her dress was lifted by the shockwave, somewhat indecent, but she had no time to care about that and immediately rushed over, asking with concern,
"Are you alright, Polina?"
"Xiven..."
Polina felt a sourness in her nose; so many had betrayed her, yet it was Xiven, the freckled girl who was often ostracized, who still stood by her side at this moment.
"I’m sorry, Polina, I should have stood up for you sooner..."
Xiven’s eyes swirled with purple-red nebulas as she took Polina’s hand and said earnestly:
"Everyone has become a bit abnormal, and I think it has to do with this ruin. Since we came down here, there’s been some indescribable force influencing our actions and throwing our emotions into chaos."
"Xiven, your eyes..." Polina hesitated.
Xiven touched her face and smiled slightly:
"Ah, I’m not quite normal either. I feel like a harbinger of disaster. If I wanted to start a fire, I could do it instantly."
"You’re the only one who never treated me badly." Polina gripped her hand tightly, nearly crying.
"What are you saying, Polina..." Xiven said reproachfully: "You’re the only one who never minded me and always helped me. I’m still blaming myself for not standing up for you sooner."
As she spoke, she raised her hand and pointed off into the distance, whimsically causing the oil lamps to spill onto the ground, igniting a fierce fire:
"Now that I have this power, I won’t let them hurt you, Polina."
As she said this, she set about fixing Polina’s broken left hand:
"You always care too much about efficiency, Polina. Look what you’ve done to yourself."
Polina felt a warmth in her heart, opened her mouth, and sent out words of gratitude:
"Thank you, Xi—"
Shick!
Xiven’s head was completely sliced open by a blade of somber purple resentment, and her brain was tossed lightly into the air like a walnut, only to shatter upon falling.
Blood splattered on Polina’s face. The thankful smile at the corner of her mouth hadn’t even formed fully before it turned into shock.
"Xiven..."
She knelt down, her red eyes gazing vacantly, her pupils expanding and contracting constantly.
"Xiven, Xiven..."
She reached out and touched Xiven’s still-warm body; the blood on the half of the freckled girl’s face covered the ugly freckles.
But this was not beautiful at all.
"Controlling calamities, what a troublesome ability—fortunately, she insisted on saving you. Such a ’Holy Mother bitch’ is insignificant no matter how many die."
Polina looked up—the shadow in front slowly crawled out a girl, one hand holding scissors still dripping with Xiven’s warm blood.
"Evelyn..."
Polina murmured her name.
"Oh, Miss, you actually remember my name—that tailor girl who can only linger on the periphery of your fan club, you never give me a glance on ordinary days."
She flicked her scissors, and the massive spirit of resentment behind her also swung a blade flower; the girl revealed a cruel smile:
"Alright! No one can save you now, my dear Miss. You will obediently become my Soul Engraving, and with your Elite Elijah essence, you will forge my path to becoming a Sword Saint!"
"...Why are you doing this?"
Polina hung her head:
"Aren’t you and Xiven both people rejected by the group?"
Evelyn raised her eyebrows, "Hah? Who cares about those people? Just because someone is unpopular, should I welcome her?"
"But you clearly, are always bullied by Dulin and Gaslin..."
"Stop it—how could someone who doesn’t even dare to bully me be considered excellent? Didn’t your mother tell you to associate with excellent people?"
Evelyn waved her hand dismissively, and the Evil Spirit Warrior behind her let out a mocking laugh.
"Xiven..."
Polina hung her head low, the warmth of Xiven’s touch lingering on her fingertips, gradually dissipating.
"Time for you to go."
Evelyn spun her scissors rapidly in hand, and the Evil Spirit Warrior behind her also spun its blade continuously; she stepped closer to Polina:
"Goodbye, Miss!"
Ping—
In the darkness, someone snapped their fingers.
In the next moment, spacetime distorted with gravity, falling into a state of freeze and solidification.
Evelyn’s cruel smile solidified in mid-air, the madness in her eyes burned intensely. Polina’s eyes were reddened, tears like pearls cascaded out, hanging midway and not falling any further.
Pat, pat, pat...
"What’s your plan?"
The stunning Gaslin held his forehead, leisurely making an entrance; he glanced at Evelyn wielding her scissors, about to strike down Polina, and pressed his hand down.
"You’re done here."
Crack!
Gravity Compression instantly descended, crushing Evelyn’s body into a ball.
"No one can defy me, this power, heh, is practically the Mandate to rule the world!"
Gaslin clicked his tongue in wonder; the slain Evelyn’s blood and flesh did not burst immediately. He turned around to look at Polina and extended his hand towards her.
Bang!
Spacetime resumed its motion.
Evelyn burst like a crushed tomato, while the tall, slender youth with the wings of a Pegasus appeared instantaneously before Gaslin. He raised his hand and grabbed Gaslin’s neck.
"Useless."
Gaslin sneered coldly, raising both hands as gravity abruptly reversed. The slender youth had no time to react; he plummeted to the sky, and his skull hammered into the overhead rocks, spattering brain matter evenly above.
"Don’t overestimate yourself. This power—is invincible on this earth."
It seems something had been forgotten.
Gaslin turned his head, but Polina had disappeared without a trace.
"...Tsk." Gaslin slightly cocked his head. "Did I lose myself in pleasure too much? But who wouldn’t revel in such power?"
It didn’t matter.
With a slight raise of his hand, he flew up.
"This power seems tailor-made for me; only someone with infinite Charm like me can truly harness its value!"
Gaslin’s delight grew:
"This ability, this ability is too magnificent... It’s like the world revolves around me!"
Snap!
Polina fell in the ruins among the tombs. She leaned against a stone coffin, her expression desolate, her gaze empty, her clothes torn and stained in several places.
But none of that mattered anymore.
Polina hung her head, whispering:
"Xiven..."
—Why did it have to be Xiven who died?
"I really..."
—Why was it the person who wanted to protect me?
"Do I even deserve her sacrifice..."
—Do I really have that value, to be protected by Xiven?
"Why has everything turned out like this..."
Polina clutched her hair, silently screaming in pain. She covered her mouth to stop any sound of crying.
If she was found now... she would completely betray Xiven’s sacrifice.
What should she do? What could she possibly do? Her grandfather never taught her anything about these situations!
Her grandfather lived a smooth-sailing life and never experienced betrayal by comrades.
And now, she was besieged by former friends wielding all manner of strange and terrifying powers.
Why was it like this? Why at all!
Polina, hugging her knees, questioned the elusive deities:
"Gods, what have I done wrong?"
"It’s not your fault, Polina."
