Chapter 753: 362. Don’t show off your wealth.
Bang!
The back of Narta’s neck was pierced by the muzzle of a kinetic gun, and the needle stabbed into his bone marrow. The injection gun continuously released Strength, pumping the black liquid medicine into the marrow.
The newly formed blood in the marrow mixed with the medicine, acting as if it had received a catalyst. It surged through his body at rocket speed.
"Ah—ahh!"
Narta roared, and his eyes immediately shone with a purple glow. Vivid patterns spread across his skin, he opened his mouth, and from his tongue sprouted numerous tiny tentacles that writhed like earthworms, eliciting a scream from the young girl nearby.
He rolled over, his muscles undulating like waves, his glass bowl and towel on his stomach were pushed aside as his intestines danced like snakes, returning into his body. Flesh and blood spontaneously intertwined and fused seamlessly, showing not the slightest scar.
"Ha... huff... huff... ah!"
A good half day passed before the purple in Narta’s eyes faded. He knelt on the ground, covered in sweat, and looked down at his abdomen—other than the torn clothes, there was not a single mark.
"Narta!" Dulin shouted, hugging Narta tightly and said excitedly, "Good brother, you’ve made it! You’re alright!"
"I, I’m alive..." Narta murmured. He turned towards Polina, immediately sobering up and said gratefully, "Miss Polina! You are my savior! Thank you for saving my life, thank you, thank you..."
Polina’s expression, however, was somewhat unnatural as she forced a smile:
"It’s nothing... Here, only I can save people’s lives, so of course, I should be the one to do it."
Narta quickly said, "But you saved me! I’ll remember this forever and will never forget it. Whatever you want, I’ll do it. Please let me repay you for saving my life!"
"Yes, yes, Polina, you did great!"
"Just accept his promise—ahh, Polina was so cool just now, I wish I were a man..."
"Well, we’ll talk about that later."
Polina smiled awkwardly and brushed it off.
Gaslin’s grey eyes flickered slightly. He stepped forward, pointed at the injection gun in Polina’s hand, and said:
"Polina."
"Hm?" Polina noticed his gaze and quickly covered the injection gun with her hand, "What is it?"
"That, is it Elite Elijah? The essence extracted from Blockade Bodies rumored to have no side effects and never cause madness," Gaslin said in a deep voice. "Why, do you have such a thing?"
"Elite Elijah!"
The atmosphere, previously filled with admiration for Polina, chilled instantly.
Drip, drip, drip...
Water droplets fell to the floor, making a crisp sound.
Polina, anxious and restless, put the injection gun back into her waist bag. She looked around; the way people were looking at her started to grow strange.
’Hey, did you hear that?’ a girl whispered to her boyfriend.
’Ah, I know. That’s Elite Elijah, a treasure worth a fortune. The energy in it is incredibly pure, and legend says it can heal all wounds...’
’It’s not just a legend. Even a body that has just died can be brought back to life if it hasn’t gone completely cold.’
The twin sisters also whispered among themselves:
’They say it can even extend one’s life?’
’The knights of the Kingdom Parliament are given a set amount every year. That isn’t just a medicine—it’s practically an extra Life.’
Slap!
Polina’s back hit the wall, and only then did she realize that she had been retreating this whole time.
The way everyone looked at her had slowly shifted. They’d usually focus on her eyes, her face, and the curves of her body—which she didn’t mind and actually pleased her, indicating that people liked her. But now, their gaze, intentional or not, lingered on her waist bag.
That look was cold yet intense, devoid of any warmth, but filled with an unspeakable... greed.
’Don’t do this...’
Polina’s feelings were unsettled, and she subconsciously prepared to flee.
Just then, Gaslin said:
"You better secure that item well, this path looks very dangerous, and we don’t know what might happen next—we’re still counting on you."
As soon as these words came out, those around him curbed their gazes and started discussing enthusiastically.
"Polina truly lives up to her name, willing to part with these things just to save someone."
"Now we’re in good shape, with Polina here, we can explore boldly and with confidence."
"Thank you, Miss Polina."
I wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination.
Polina, watching these still young and enthusiastic boys and girls, couldn’t feel any warmth.
A draft...
The deep tunnel carried a breeze with a hint of moisture.
Polina shrank her neck, hugged her shoulders tightly, and kept scanning her companions.
She used to rejoice when others got close to her, but now, she only felt fear.
"Xiven..."
She remembered the freckled girl she was close to and wanting her company, she called out:
"Xiven—where’s Xiven?"
Everyone paused, looked around, but Xiven was nowhere to be seen.
"Did you see her?"
"Wasn’t she at the back of the line?"
"Forget it, don’t worry too much. The freckled girl probably couldn’t take it and went back to the surface."
"That won’t do, we need to call Xiven over here!" Polina quickly said.
"It doesn’t matter if one person is missing," Dulin said dismissively, moving closer to Polina: "Let’s keep going."
"But—"
Just as Polina was about to speak, Dulin blinked rapidly, giving her a significant look. Polina closed her mouth and continued to move forward.
Dulin took his place beside her, whispering in a voice only the two of them could hear as they walked:
’Don’t be afraid, I’ll protect you.’
Polina was surprised. Dulin nodded toward Narta with a simple smile:
’You saved my good buddy. I won’t be ungrateful.’
A warmth spread in Polina’s heart, at least her actions hadn’t been in vain.
"Oh, we’re here."
Gaslin, who was leading the way in front, suddenly announced:
"This is the true face of the ruins."
They stepped over a tall threshold and looked ahead. The space opened up considerably, revealing neatly arranged diamond-shaped stone coffins on either side of the path, each with strange iron rings hanging on them, the purpose of which was unclear.
They lit the oil lamps on both sides of the path, and the room immediately brightened up, revealing its clear and complete layout:
In front of them was a hemispherical pit, and the stone coffins, arranged orderly like bookshelves in a library, circled around it. A dark liquid flowed continuously between the fissures of the coffins, adjusting the hydraulic pressure through their configuration, creating a peaceful fountain at the center.
This black fountain silently cradled a beautifully sculpted statue, which appeared to be a headless mermaid with a graceful posture, but her head was conspicuously absent, and it was unclear whether it was damaged or designed that way.
Polina took a deep breath and said heavily:
"This is... the remains of human civilization before the official advent of the Void."
Contained within, perhaps, are records of the world before the Void had fully descended; its significance... immeasurable.
