Chapter 551: 185. Magic Tower Library
"Lucite," Hobbs suddenly spoke up.
"What’s wrong?" Lucite put down the completed scroll and touched his head, puzzled.
"Don’t you think something’s amiss?"
Hobbs pointed at the armed students ahead.
Contrary to their earlier promise, Captain Modote’s Inspectorate hadn’t immediately headed to the Graduate Academy; at Modote’s insistence, they had first made a detour to the Magic Tower Library and taken out some Magic Guidebooks, transcribing many attack spell scrolls.
"Hobbs, are you starting to suspect something again?" Lucite asked.
Hobbs said, "According to Modote, the Graduate Academy is inside the city, fifty kilometers away from our school."
"Given the current situation, with Dimensional Barriers and Growth-armored Vanguards everywhere, it would take at least two days to get there. During that time, they’ll certainly need weapons and supplies, right?" Lucite thought there was nothing wrong with that.
"The reason is fine, but the behavior of the Patrol Members seems a bit abnormal to me."
Hobbs quietly pulled Lucite to the side and whispered:
"Look at them, the Lower Order magic scrolls are ready-made, just lying there in the library, yet they’re not using them. Instead, they deliberately open books to transcribe anew."
"Hmm..." Lucite twirled his mustache, pondering for a moment before saying, "Perhaps they’re worried about the Effect being poor? After all, since they’re at the Magic Tower Library, it surely holds the most accurate contents of the classical originals."
"I think they’re secretly recording content," Hobbs said, taking a book from his chest and handing it to Lucite, "These guys are probably looking to line their pockets. You should take a few books too."
Lucite glanced at the cover, ’Su Leda Curse Technique Notes,’ and immediately felt a cold sweat running down his spine:
"God damn forbidden books—shit, this is a crime, Hobbs."
"Who even has police now? I always feel something’s not right—these guys have guns, armor, and a population. If they add a few more forbidden books to expand their combat power, do you think anyone would dare to manage them?"
Hobbs was quick-witted:
"Having guns, one has peace of mind. At worst, we can call it emergency evasion. Just in case these guys get up to something nefarious, we can use the forbidden spells to stop them."
"But..." Lucite hesitated, "Isn’t that still not great? After all, this knowledge is forbidden, and we don’t know the risks involved; neither you nor I have taken the relevant courses. What if it harms us?"
"Come on, just take it!"
"What are you discussing?"
A Patrol Member came over and asked curiously.
"Ah! Nothing!" Lucite was startled and the forbidden book in his hand dropped to the ground.
The Patrol Member looked at him strangely, and then his gaze shifted downward: "Hm? You dropped something, let me pick it up for you..."
Slap.
Hobbs stepped forward quickly, pressing down on the cover, snatched it back first, stuffed it into a bookshelf nearby, and laughed awkwardly:
"Nothing much. It’s Lucite’s first time in the Magic Tower Library, and this kind of place isn’t open to the public on normal days. He was so shocked that he’s lost for words."
"Really? That’s quite normal. After all, our school’s Magic Tower Library is the most abundant storage for forbidden knowledge on Baizhu Star."
The Patrol Member was actually quite nice; he lit his Magic Pipe, chuckled a few times in agreement:
"Usually, it’s Dean Nastisha herself who guards and sits in the Magic Tower. Other schools’ Magic Tower Libraries are mostly the same. Only in very few circumstances, such as graduation, special research, or strategic laboratory demands, are people allowed to consult the materials here."
"That serious, huh."
Speaking, Hobbs stepped forward, infused Magic Power into the Patrol Member’s pipe to light it, and the other guy looked at Hobbs appreciatively, "No wonder they call you ’Know-it-all Hobbs,’ you really know how to handle things."
"Heh heh, it’s nothing, nothing, as a junior, it’s my duty to respect the seniors and elders."
Hobbs’s words were pleasant to hear, and the Patrol Member nodded, inadvertently saying a bit more:
"To tell the truth, we also don’t know what lies ahead. Somehow, we have to cross the city to reach the Graduate Academy. By then, we may encounter even more enemies and survivors on the road. Once we leave the school, it will be dangerous for us. So, it’s better to take this opportunity to collect more knowledge and magical materials—don’t take it the wrong way, fellas. The law is for the living, but no matter what, life is our own, after all."
"Exactly! Life comes first. Senior, you’re absolutely right," Hobbs agreed wholeheartedly, nodding vigorously: "Speaking of which, senior, once we entered the Magic Tower, I lost track of Captain Modote. Do you know where he might be?"
Lucite was speechless.
"Why, do you have business with him?" The Patrol Member looked at him suspiciously. "The senior said he was looking for a powerful magic book. That’s what his tutor told him."
"Just a little doubt."
’Looks like Modote doesn’t really want others to know his purpose.’
Hobbs’s eyes rolled, casually changing the subject:
"Since we’ll be leaving campus, we’re bound to face heaps of Growth-armored Vanguards. What should we do then?"
"Well... I don’t know," shrugged the Patrol Member: "Anyway, with Captain at the Epsilon Stage, who is just a step away from Zeta Rank, we should trust in Captain Modote."
