Chapter 520: 155. The Farthest Star on Earth
The work of a Presidential bodyguard was not easy, from the moment the Air Force One aircraft touched down, until President David Lyn’s day ended and he checked into the hotel arranged by the Empire for rest, they had to stay on duty for several more hours.
Despite the hard work, Demi Gue Seth had no complaints about her job. After the reorganization and incorporation of the Rose Army, President David Lyn did not hold their past as rebels against them, nor did he try to ingratiate himself with them. He chose the wise and capable for positions, making proper arrangements, and everyone lived quite comfortably.
As for the hardships? Although the work was intense and there were plenty of security risks, for Rose Army Warriors used to licking blood off the edges of knives, accompanying the President on state visits meant enjoying VIP treatment, even at state banquets: crab salad, caviar, tender ham, Red Arrow-style baked potatoes with eggplant, and over seventy kinds of dessert after dinner. They were free to indulge in limited supply fruits, especially tropical fruits that cost thousands of Derby each.
After finishing her day’s work, Demi didn’t have time to relax. She still had to report to the embassy’s security department and check the confidentiality of the communication equipment. Only after all this could she rest and relax, gathering with her old comrade Lute Elan to drink tea and chat.
"The Red Arrows are really too powerful, I’ve never eaten seafood before, but they dug their own ocean and released their laboratory-bred species for aquaculture." Lute said excitedly while eating ice cream, "If our talks with the Red Arrows go well, the Frost Plating Federation will receive 4 billion Galun in material aid, and then our people will be able to enjoy these foods too."
"Indeed, the battles we fought in the past were meaningful after all."
Demi took a sip of her tea and sighed,
"It’s just a pity... If only Nomi were here too, my lovely little niece, she survived the persecution in Frost Plated but ended up in the mutants’ lair. If not for the headquarters of the Rose Army stopping me, I really would’ve liked to drive the Mobile Armor over and turn Dongyue Ridge upside down..."
"Such talk isn’t good for the Federation, better not to say it," Lute reminded her.
"I just can’t be satisfied!" Demi said, flushing with indignation as she downed her fruit tea, "There are two things in my life that I can’t get over—the first is that old witch Madeleine, who was supposedly killed by a bomb; it was too easy a death for the persecution she inflicted on men and women."
"The second is my dear niece, little Nomi; she was only 17 when she died. If she were alive now, she would be 19, an adult, maybe with a boyfriend, attending college, becoming an honorable worker or teacher. Dammit, my niece, Nomi, how lovely, how beautiful, and how kind she was..."
As Demi spoke, her eyes reddened and her nose grew sour, and she turned her head away.
They had only just achieved victory, with President David Lyn leading the way, and Frost Plated was getting better and better, yet Nomi never saw this scene.
"Nomi..."
"Her mother died in the Outer World, and her father was always busy fighting. Now, he’s finally idle and could have spent more time with her."
But on the eve of everything flourishing, she disappeared.
The room fell into silence. The President’s security agents were not allowed to drink alcohol, so they substituted tea for wine. The better the tea, the more sobering it was—making the pain of Nomi’s kidnapping all the more acute for Demi.
"People can’t always dwell in the past, Demi."
Lute patted his companion’s shoulder, comforting her,
"I’ve heard that in Erga City now, there is a Monolith Church that worships a deity named Leoz. Why don’t you try praying to them? Before we leave the Red Arrows, we could also visit their Holy Land—the White Obelisk."
"I’ve lost my faith in deities long ago," Demi shook her head, "If I prayed to that damn Leoz, would He really bring Nomi back to me?"
"Fate plays a part, maybe you could give it a try. They say that deity is quite effective, and many Red Arrow People now want to migrate to Erga City."
"Pff, superstition, all superstition."
Demi rubbed her forehead,
"That Leoz, huh? Bless my niece Nomi with safety, thank you."
"That’s... a bit disrespectful, isn’t it?" Lute said with a wry smile.
"Disrespectful? Is it?" Demi shook her head, "Frost Plated People don’t believe in useless deities. Even promotional events in stores offer some gift to make people believe, at least show some sincerity first."
Knock knock knock.
The door sounded, and Demi asked in confusion, "It’s already very late, no need for cleaning."
"Hello, is Ms. Demi Gue Seth there?" Asked the polite voice of a service worker from outside the door.
"Yes, that’s me. What’s the matter?"
"It’s like this, a gentleman who wished to remain anonymous left a gift at the front desk, asking me to personally deliver it to you."
"Oh, that so? Probably one of the old lady’s admirers," Demi struck a pose to her companion, flaunting, "I didn’t expect to be so popular in Red Arrow, maybe I should consider changing careers and becoming a celebrity."
"Knock it off," Lute glanced at her disapprovingly. "I bet it’s probably from one of the international friends who supported us."
"Ms. Demi, please open the door. This gift, it must be personally signed for by you."
"Alright already, I got it, I’m coming now," said Demi.
Demi stood up, walked to the door, pulled it open, and immediately saw a Red Arrow People service worker, looking left and right she said, "I don’t see a gift though."
