Chapter 50: 040. Being Hunted at High Speed
"Hurry, hurry, hurry!"
Li Aozi urged urgently. The car, assembled by the people of the Outer World using who knows what kind of scrap metal, was in worse condition than expected. The narrow front seat could barely fit two people; he held onto the roof with both hands, half of his body hanging outside, dodging bullets from the Fourth Rule Agents whizzing past him from time to time.
Thanks to the wind, sand dust, and the dark red-black Ersha Clouds in the sky, the earth was dim and lightless.
In such low-visibility conditions, it would have been a miracle if the bullets fired by the female agents of the Fourth Rule hit their target—a result only the benevolent spirits of the Twin Queens could grant.
"Stop nagging! If you hadn’t insisted on refueling, this car would have been enough to get us out of here!"
Nomi occasionally jerked the steering wheel, using the rise and fall of the dunes to escape their pursuers’ line of sight. However, the Fourth Rule Agents were infuriated and turned on their high beams, disregarding the risk of being exposed in the darkness just to capture them.
The glaring white light flared up in the rearview mirror, and Nomi clicked her tongue, her vision impaired by the strong light. Li Aozi, without any courtesy, immediately punched the rearview mirror, knocking it askew and shattering it, freeing Nomi from its glare. Without a second word, she floored the accelerator, speeding down a hillside and leaving the Fourth Rule’s SUV behind.
"Take a detour, back to Qiu Ran’s place! This car has no protection, it’ll be buried if we hit a sand snowstorm."
Seeing the lights of the SUV still doggedly pursuing them, Li Aozi hurriedly urged.
"Forget that for now—damn it! This car’s out of gas!" Nomi glanced down at the dashboard where the fuel gauge no longer showed any gas, a chill ran down her spine in fear.
"What do we do now!? We took a big detour just now to shake them off... That must have been at least two kilometers!"
"Up the slope."
Li Aozi scanned the area; the terrain was clearly undulating with several steep gradients.
Without hesitation, Nomi turned the steering wheel. With a bang, a bullet took off her earlobe, but she didn’t care, continued to press the gas pedal, and drove up the slope at full speed.
Their movements quickly attracted the attention of the Fourth Rule Agents.
"What’s going on? The vehicle disappeared from our view."
Agent Yawen holstered her gun, dropped down from the sunroof, her body covered in mud mixed with snow and sand. She opened her breathing mask and hurriedly asked her colleague in the passenger seat.
"I’ll activate the thermal tracker—here, they’re advancing diagonally along the dune. They are... "
"They’re going uphill, trying to shake us off with that? Dream on!"
Agent Dima cussed in the channel and yelled at the driver:
"Speed up, catch up with them—everyone hold on tight!"
Yawen frowned, pressed the earpiece, and cautioned, "Dima, this is too reckless. We don’t know what’s on the other side of the slope; it could be a trap—"
"Shut up, you capital vase girl. You’ve fired so many shots without hitting anything and you still have the nerve to speak up here?"
Dima fiercely retorted to Yawen, urging:
"Hurry up! That imperial dog insulted the Twin Queens and has some dealings with the Rose Army; we must capture him alive!"
The Fourth Rule’s vehicles followed without doubt, their SUVs were more powerful and robust, well-suited for climbing.
Hum——
The wheels dug into the sand and snow, the engine whining miserably under the strain of the incline. The Fourth Rule Agents were pressed firmly in their seats, with only a few managing to take up their guns and aim out of the vehicle amidst the relentless flurry of snow and blasting sand dust, struggling to make out the battered car ahead as they opened fire.
"Duck down!"
Nomi said as she pulled Li Aozi close to her, a stray bullet grazing her, spurting fresh blood. She had long been numb to such pain, unimpeded as she switched to the first gear and continued to floor the accelerator, climbing the slope at accelerated speed.
After all, a shot or two wouldn’t kill her, but Li Aozi might not withstand a few more hits.
"What’s going on, why are they climbing faster than us?" Dima fired a few shots and noticed that their vehicle was falling behind by several meters from Li Aozi’s, immediately scolded the male driver.
The male driver spoke tensely:
"They have fewer people, and their car is lighter..."
"Get out!"
Dima was frantic, Captain Nimotin had already been embarrassed by that Red Arrow man.
This was a rare opportunity to shine—if she could capture the enemy alive, she would definitely receive commendation from the agency and might even get a promotion to the headquarters. With that thought, she immediately waved her hand and led the female agents out of the vehicle to climb the slope on foot.
Frost Plated did not have the saying, "Haste makes waste," but this act of abandoning the car to climb on foot still caused Agent Yawen, her colleague, to lose her cool.
"Get back here!" Yawen exclaimed anxiously: "The wind is so strong here, climbing higher could blow people away—"
"Shut up!"
Dima was livid, this annoying woman was constantly ruining her plans. She held her pistol fiercely and said in the channel:
"So what if you went to college? Does being a college graduate mean you are accomplished?! Don’t joke; let me show you how a real field agent fights!"
"Agent Dima, if you continue to be so stubborn, you’ll only lead to our own demise. Have you forgotten how Li Aozi just—"
"Beep——"
Agent Dima directly blocked Yawen’s voice. She took a deep breath, activated her Qi Energy, and enhanced her physical abilities. As a Martial Artist, this protective Qi Energy was sufficient to avoid the wind and sand, allowing her to proceed steadily.
