Chapter 221 - 43. Meeting
Chapter 221: 43. Meeting
"So, you are Mr. David Lyn’s daughter!"
Looking at Yawen in front of him, Du Zexin exclaimed in surprise:
"Incredible, I thought Mr. David Lyn had no descendants..."
"It might be because dad has always been cautious and frugal, and we never show ourselves publicly."
Yawen explained.
Meeting Du Zexin was a suggestion given to her by Leo before he left. Du Zexin had been rescued under the title of ’Leo’s captive,’ and owing to the serious cerebral thrombosis issues he faced, the Third Rule Agency hardly questioned him. Right after his surgery, they kicked Du Zexin out of the hospital to avoid him incurring high medical costs that would need to be reimbursed during their nutrition allowance period.
Du Zexin picked up his coffee, took a sip, and his expression immediately turned as bitter as the coffee.
He was dressed in casual attire, a blue and white checkered shirt with a khaki vest, and ordinary jeans, giving off the vibe of a simple Engineer or programmer, never suggesting his cold-blooded secret agent ties to the Third Rule Agency.
"Mr. Du, don’t you like the taste at this shop?"
Yawen noticed Du Zexin’s discomfort and asked with concern.
"No—I’ve never had coffee before, it’s too expensive. I usually drink plain water."
"Oh, that’s fine." Yawen smiled, "I don’t often invite people out, but since it’s a meeting, it felt appropriate to pick a formal venue."
"Uh, really?"
Du Zexin seemed a bit uneasy.
On one hand, as a civil servant who climbed up from the lower echelons who frequently changed positions and lacked a place of his own, he lived in a factory for the sake of his equipment containing a mechanic—naturally, he had not indulged in such bourgeois luxuries like coffee.
On the other hand, the fact that the daughter of his admired idol was sitting across from him, and that she had initiated this meeting under the name of an ’introduction by Leo,’ left Du Zexin with many questions he wanted to ask—had David Lyn truly been incarcerated? How was Leo now? What was her relationship with Leo?
Damn, why do I feel the questions are getting weirder?
Although Agent Yawen was beautiful, Du Zexin was more concerned about her father, David Lyn, and Leo.
"Miss Yawen, I indeed have many things I want to ask you." Du Zexin weighed his words and asked, "What exactly is the situation with your respected father? Was he really imprisoned in Elf Island?"
"Yes."
Yawen nodded:
"It is a fact that my father was about to assume the role of Minister of Defense. Within less than two months at the Twin Palaces, he was secretly judged."
"President Madeleine bypassed all legal procedures and personally declared my father guilty of treason, hurriedly sending him to Elf Island."
"My mother tried to seek justice but being a rural woman, she caused a scene at the entrance of the Twin Palaces and was subsequently battered and imprisoned for ’intending to assassinate the President.’
"That’s outrageous." Du Zexin clicked his tongue in silence, his gaze hardened as he continued, "Then what about your situation...?"
"I’m okay, after all, I was able to finish university." Yawen said, "I’m currently employed at the Fourth Rule Agency, having been promoted to Elite Agent, and will soon be transferred to the capital. Once there, I’ll have the chance to access the Fourth Rule Headquarters Building and steal information about Elf Island to rescue my parents."
"That plan sounds reliable. Fourth Rule doesn’t consider one’s origin or conduct political vetting; with your capabilities, you’ll be promoted quickly. I’ll do my part during this time."
Du Zexin nodded:
"I know some young people from the David Lyn Faction. Mr. David Lyn is a capable and visionary leader who can lead us toward revival and help us overcome the current plight of Frost Plated."
"Thank you, Mr. Du Zexin." Yawen gratefully said, "I’ve been wanting to contact individuals willing to support us; after my parents were wrongfully imprisoned, our family immediately collapsed. My brother couldn’t find work, leaving only me to support the family. Meeting you and Leo has truly been a great help."
"About that, I’m actually quite curious, how did you come to know Leo?"
Du Zexin took another sip of coffee, his brow furrowing into the character ’chuan.’ He hurriedly added five cubes of sugar and a spoonful of milk, continuously stirring it.
"That, by some accident."
Yawen recalled Leo’s face, slightly distracted, she shook her head:
"I was involved in his arrest, and then due to some twists, I found out that he too supported my father... and we got acquainted from there."
"Is that so?" Du Zexin eyed her doubtfully.
He noticed that Yawen’s demeanor became slightly unnatural when mentioning Leo, apparently a bit shy.
Yawen always thought there was something odd about Du Zexin’s gaze, especially since he repeatedly brought up Leo on his own, displaying extreme interest. Suddenly, she asked:
"Are you jealous?"
Pfft——
Du Zexin spat out his overly sweet coffee, coughed twice, and, covering his mouth, asked in disbelief:
"...What did you say?"
"I thought you had a fondness for Mr. Leo," Yawen, resting her chin on her hands, curiously asked, "Wasn’t that the reason you fought alongside him the first time you met?"
"You can’t assume I’m a Mechanic just because I fit the stereotype!" Du Zexin was speechless, "Although I’m not very interested in women, I’m not very interested in men either. For me, Leo is more of a kindred spirit; we’ve fought bloodily side by side."
"I see..." Yawen nodded in understanding, "You don’t really need to be nervous, though. Even though our country has severe gender discrimination, there are still places that are very free."
"Let’s change the subject." Du Zexin waved his hand, "Leo, how is he now? Has he been in touch?"
——Aren’t we still talking about Leo?
Realizing more and more, Yawen gave him a ’I know, no need to pretend’ look, but when it came to serious matters, she spoke earnestly:
"Leo has already arrived in Grante Duchy. He just started a global broadcast, showing people the bombardment of the Sulut Palace and the war of independence. It seems to be going quite well."
"That guy... must have been promoted to Beta Rank by now."
Du Zexin’s tone carried a touch of sentimentality and jealousy.
All the accomplishments he had strived to achieve through years of dedicated study, Leo had managed to obtain in just a few months.
"But that’s good too. Leo told me, ’Elf Island is in the sea but has no water.’ He is still very keen to participate in the plan to overthrow the island prison."
"In the sea, but has no water..."
Yawen frowned thoughtfully.
"I don’t understand what that means either," said Du Zexin:
"But, I trust him. Leo is quite remarkable. From the moment I first saw him, I felt an inexplicable trust in him. I always felt that he would not deceive me, even if he might deceive others."
Yawen raised an eyebrow: "Mr. Du Zexin, your statement just now sounded like a teenage girl in love—"
Beep beep beep!
An urgent ringtone interrupted, and Yawen took out her terminal, glanced at the caller ID, and apologetically said to Du Zexin:
"Sorry, it’s from the agency."
————————————
Cold raindrops drifted down and splashed into the deep court walls.
Alicxia, leading the assassination team, hurried across the corridor, their steps trampling the expensive carpet and leaving dirty footprints, with the walls on both sides adorned with the history of Sulut Palace’s past rulers.
Alicxia had an excellent memory; with just a sidelong glance, she absorbed everything and extracted the information:
"Lardio Gamos Gulan (98 years before the catastrophe to Year 25), the first Governor of Grante Duchy."
The photo of the first Governor showed a man in a military uniform, sporting a neatly trimmed beard, with a younger Duke Gamos kneeling beside him. The Duke was so tall that he had to stoop to fit in the same frame as his own son.
Surprisingly, the Duke looked very handsome in his youth, with brown-black hair flowing over his shoulders and a body as robust as a mammoth, bearing some characteristics of old-era Homo Sapiens. The information below explained that this was the Duke’s first son.
It was evident that the Duke felt very proud standing next to his son, with a radiant smile on his face.
"Karachia Gamos Gulan (24 years before the catastrophe to Galactic Era Year 4), Governor of Grante Duchy."
The second photo displayed Duke Gamos’s second son. According to the era, this was the child born to his 12th wife. Karachia was short, and Duke Gamos held him in his arms, still very affectionate.
After decades, Duke Gamos’s body visibly aged but still appeared very robust, though his eyes were no longer bright, and his expression had become subdued.
"Regiva Gamos Gulan (Galactic Era Year 5 to 41), Governor of Grante Duchy."
Throughout the blooms and wilts of nearly three hundred years, Grante Duchy had never been independent. Frost Plated had promoted generations of governors from the Grante family, and behind each one of them loomed the figure of their father, Duke Gamos.
