Chapter 155: 127. Nimotin’s Fantastic Adventure (Two in One)
"Achoo—"
Out of nowhere, Captain Nimotin let out a loud sneeze, the cold of the Outer World rapidly sapping her body heat.
Despite the numerous prosthesis plugins embedded in her body, and being an Assassin of the Alpha Stage, biology is biology, and it’s incredibly fragile in the face of nature’s cold.
She quickly shrugged her shoulders and shivered, muttering to herself,
"How much longer do we have to walk? If this keeps up, I’m going to freeze into an ice sculpture..."
In contrast to Nimotin’s quivering, Yawen was much calmer. As a Spirit Medium, accustomed to constant contact with ghosts and spirits, she was used to the chilly erosions and had stronger resistance to the cold than most people.
She propped Nimotin up with one hand and fished out a pack of compressed biscuits from her waist pouch with the other:
"Captain Nimotin, if you’re feeling hungry, I still have some food here."
Grateful, Nimotin cast an appreciative glance at the rookie she once considered just a pretty face, tore open the compressed biscuits, and took a big bite.
Crunch!
Chewing the hard compressed biscuits in the midst of the heavy snow was both sad and painful. The rough texture made it an unpleasant experience, plus the coarse grains scratched the skin in her mouth, but the feeling of gradually gaining energy was nevertheless deeply moving to Nimotin.
In the three days since arriving in the Outer World, Yawen had healed her spiritual exhaustion.
This young lady was resourceful and obedient; a college graduate who knew a little bit of everything, which suddenly restored Nimotin’s dignity as a leader.
As she chewed, she said,
"Thanks, missy—no, that’s not right. We’ve been wandering in the Outer World for two days now, how do you still have food?"
"Ah, well that,"
Yawen responded with a slight sound, explaining,
"I almost starved to death as a child, so I’m particularly afraid of hunger. Every time I go out, I carry enough emergency food to last at least a month."
Nimotin raised an eyebrow:
"Hah? With your origin, you almost starved to death? What did you go through when you were young?"
Yawen remained silent, and just when the atmosphere was about to turn awkward, a violent noise suddenly penetrated the snowstorm.
Thudda thudda thudda thudda thudda...
"Hey, looks like the agency’s support is finally here."
Nimotin breathed a sigh of relief:
"Finally, we can leave this godforsaken place."
Yawen looked up; red and green signal lights blinked, and the helicopter’s propellers whipped up fierce winds that tore apart the blizzard, holding steady in mid-air despite the winds.
Landing and taking off in the Outer World’s harsh environment was dangerous. The red and black sky obscured vision, and the savage storm and flying snow could easily lead to a crash if one wasn’t careful.
The helicopter’s deafening roar cut through the night sky, and Yawen noticed the dark-painted V-07 ’Pelican’ transport helicopter, which clearly indicated that not just rescuers were coming.
The helicopter dropped a tether, and a chilly, hoarse female voice came through the communicator:
"Elite Agent Nimotin and Agent Yawen of the Fourth Rule, sorry to keep you waiting."
"That voice—" Nimotin’s pupils contracted as she pressed her earpiece, trembling as she spoke, "Governor... Governor Lai Lier?"
"Lai Lier Nanhu, head of the Fourth Rule Agency?!"
Yawen’s eyes briefly flashed with a cold light. She clenched her fist then instantly put on a smiling face, saying with feigned excitement,
"To be rescued by Governor Lai Lier in person—truly an honor!"
"You’re welcome, now come aboard, your mission isn’t over yet."
"Mission?"
Nimotin paused for a moment, but she and Yawen were already hooked to the tether and, using the foot pedal and hand grips, were quickly pulled up by the retrieval mechanism and boarded safely.
As soon as Nimotin set foot inside, someone handed her a military-grade prosthesis. Two undeniable agents of the Fourth Rule held her firmly in place and fitted the prosthesis on her in no time.
"Hey, hey, hey, I haven’t taken the suppressant or done the interface rejection test—what the fuck? This is Laifu Light Industries’ ’Didrot 1008’ prosthesis! Worth 250,000 Derby!"
Nimotin looked bewilderingly at the Frost Plated Government’s most advanced military-grade prosthesis. Her usually slow brain instantly became alert.
Something was off.
Though not the brightest, after so many years at the Fourth Rule Agency, she knew how the government operated. Didn’t she know the level of government skulduggery? Corruption, embezzlement, pocketing funds—she was well aware of it all.
Among the Frost Plated public servants, the Fourth Rule’s female agents had the worst deal. Usually, it was:
Insurance contributions dragged out for six months, sometimes the agency not paying a dime.
Run off your feet with work, yet paying for electricity during overtime.
Paid meals on business trips turn out unrefundable.
Performance appraisals sky-high, pray hard before inspections.
Risk life on the front line, yet the income matches that of child labor.
Not enough hands for work, yet the funds for it often lacking.
Of course, although on paper the benefits weren’t as good as a bank’s security guard, the gray income of Fourth Rule female agents wasn’t limited to that.
Nimotin had worked for the Frost Plated Government for over a decade; she knew exactly how rotten the Fourth Rule Agency was with all the budget cuts, embezzlement, and lining one’s own pockets.
Now the Governor herself was involved, gifting her an expensive prosthesis on the spot—could it be they’d changed their ways?
Changed my ass. If something’s big enough to have the Governor come in person, and they only give you 250,000 Derby, they’re probably still shortchanging you.
"Governor... couldn’t be sending me on a suicide mission, could she?"
After being played by Li Aozi before, Nimotin was a lot savvier now. She glanced at Agent Yawen—the lady had changed into a clean, new outfit and sat constrained in the seat opposite hers.
