Chapter 103: 081. Crime Video
The Bounty Hunters in front of the GTB building were already in an uproar.
"Holy shit—a bounty worth 20 million Derby, this is the first time I’ve heard of it."
"Who exactly is this person? Did he kill His Excellency the President’s daughter?"
"Just accept the task and you’ll find out."
Most of the Bounty Hunters couldn’t wait to get started; 20 million Derby was enough to make one rich overnight, but more importantly, it meant owning a property with 90 years’ tenure in the capital’s urban area—the capital had no concept of school district housing, which meant that your descendants could freely choose any college to attend.
Being able to let one’s offspring at least compete on the same playing field as those of the nobility and societal elites meant they wouldn’t have to live life always on the line, with blood on their hands, never certain of the next day.
Before long, these people rushed into GTB’s Bounty Department, accepted the task, and then happily handed over the money they’d just earned from GTB to the Purchasing Department, even thanking them for it.
Xue Nian and Luo Le were also quite interested, though they were more focused on the task itself.
"We’ve been in Frost Plated for two months now, and this is the first global manhunt from GTB."
Luo Le clicked his tongue in wonder:
"Anyone with half a brain knows that someone capable of taking down a Beta Rank powerhouse has to be at least Beta Ranked himself, and renowned for brutality at that—a Scavenger. These under-level-20 nobodies are just going to be throwing their lives away."
"You criticize them for being dim-witted, but they’re well aware they’ve only got one life—make it big, or die trying."
Xue Nian disagreed. He glanced at Lu Run, who was entering the building with a GTB work pass.
Luo Le realized something:
"Hey, where’s the cameraman?"
Xue Nian pointed inside the building. They weren’t GTB members or Bounty Hunters—the company’s regulations didn’t allow testers into any faction organization—without an identity permit, they could only wait outside.
Soon after, Lu Run came back with a chip.
"Why did you suddenly go inside to film? What good stuff did you get?"
"The interior was one aspect," Lu Run said with excitement. "I found out this GTB identity is quite useful. I told the reception I wanted to learn about ’Li Aozi,’ and the synthetic human beauty handed me this chip. She said I could read it with any playback device or anyone with a brain-computer interface."
He handed the chip to Luo Le, who had a high degree of character modification. When Luo Le took the chip, he immediately saw the item information:
[Item Name]: "GTB Wanted Criminal Information Record Chip—’Li Aozi’"
[Type]: Chip/Information Carrier
[Quality]: Ordinary and Durable
[Attributes]: Access information on the wanted criminal ’Li Aozi,’ including a 334G high-definition video file with detailed crime recordings.
Memory consumption: 340G
[Introduction]: All intelligence has its biases, please verify with actual events,
Special note: This item is related to a linked Task, please do not damage.
"There are a few gigs of text material and picture information inside, but the big deal is a video—let’s go somewhere secluded, I’ll share it in the group for you to see."
Luo Le was intrigued and transcribed the data inside the chip into a file, then sent it to their three-person channel.
"Eh, can the game world’s file data actually be transferred out?" Lu Run was surprised.
"The chip is filled with binary data, what’s so strange about transferring it?"
"Doesn’t that involve leaking secrets?"
"Nope, we use a LAN, and the big shots are all watching. It’s also part of the live broadcast showcase."
Luo Le opened the reference documents and began perusing them outside the game, explaining:
"Moreover, it seems the company has never cared about game content confidentiality... If anything, they purposely want people to know about this game."
"Purposely mean—" Lu Run started to ask.
"Check the documents," Xue Nian signaled with his eyes. "The data shows that this NPC happens to use Arcane Energy, with abilities around Beta Rank, which should meet the company’s requirements for making a PV. Nice find, Lu Run."
"Oh, I thought he looked handsome, and that would probably deceive—er, attract female Players to the Frost Plated Republic..."
"Cough cough—"
Xue Nian’s lips twitched, sure that once the game launches, Lu Run would definitely be hunted down dozens of times by Frost Plated players.
As part of the promotional department, Lu Run was keenly aware of what female players wanted: even if they always said there’s no romance in esports, who wouldn’t want a tall, strong, and handsome virtual character? I mean, I want to focus on the game, but come on, he’s a world-renowned (wanted) hottie!
"I gotta say, the guy does look pretty good, and for some reason, I feel a strange kinship with him."
Luo Le stroked his chin, flipping through the police profiles and information descriptions of Li Aozi:
"21 years old, vocational school graduate, arsonist of bank buildings, attacker of law enforcement, assailant of humanitarian aid organizations—hey, isn’t this guy a scumbag and Terrorist? Are you sure it’s okay to use him for promotional imagery?"
"Artistic processing, artistic processing," Lu Run dismissed nonchalantly. When it came to professional matters, he was bold:
"185 cm tall, weighing 82 kg—nice physique, could be a great model. It’s just that his brown and black wasteland-style coat kinda kills the vibe..."
"He’s a Scavenger," Xue Nian reminded. "In the game, Azure Star’s Outer World has three major dangerous organizations: Scavengers, Greening Base, and Metro Brotherhood. Among them, Scavengers are the most brutal and despicable, at a minimum on the Alpha Class level."
"Wait, what about that Alpha Beta stuff you guys were just mentioning? All these fancy terms—are they just a mess?" Lu Run asked, puzzled.
"It’s just the game’s hierarchy of ranks. You should flip through the company training manual sometime—oh, but you office types don’t need to read that stuff."
