Chapter 042: A Kindness That’s Hard to Refuse

Su Mingxuan wasn’t sure how to describe his feelings right now.

The way he looked at Bai Suxin was like he was staring at some kind of… monster. With such a tragic past, how had she even managed to survive until now?

Not only did she have to avoid the pursuit of the Heaven, Earth, Profounf, and Yellow Divisions, but she also had to escape Ye Tian’s men trying to kill her. And the one responsible for all of this… was her own father?

Holy crap. That’s one hell of a life. No wonder she’s a walking storm cloud.

Su Mingxuan put down his chopsticks.

After listening to her story, he was pretty much full anyway. He wiped his mouth with a napkin and said, “After they pinned you with that charge, how did you escape? Sure, you’re a good intel officer, but it’s obvious you don’t have freak-level skills like Ye Tian.”

As an intel agent, her counter-surveillance skills were definitely solid. That much was certain. And with all the classified info in her head, once she got out, she’d know exactly where was safe. But the problem was—her combat ability was trash.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have gotten beat down so badly before. So how the hell did she get away?

“I was captured,” Bai Suxin said softly. “My mother helped me escape… She sent me here to Tianhai City. I’ve been hiding out here for five years. But she…”

Ah, an inside job. But seriously, what’s up with this family? Full-on soap opera.

“Sister Bai, why would your dad do that to you?” Su Xiaomeng was furious.

Even a tiger doesn’t eat its own cubs. But her dad had shoved her into hell.

“I don’t know,” Bai Suxin shook her head, voice filled with sadness.

Betrayed by your own father and dragged into this mess—no one could imagine how painful and hopeless that must feel.

“That’s just awful,” Su Xiaomeng fumed. “Your dad’s a real scumbag! When I get back, I’m gonna talk to my dumb… um, I mean, my dad! I’ll make him get justice for you!”

Su Mingxuan: “…”

This girl’s guts were too big.

He looked at her speechlessly and pinched her ear. “You trying to stir up trouble? You can’t just blurt stuff like that out, you know? Gotta have evidence. Don’t make waves for Uncle.”

“Uuuu~ Brother Mingxuan, that hurts,” Su Xiaomeng whined coquettishly.

“I didn’t even use any force,” Su Mingxuan muttered, letting go of her.

He turned to Bai Suxin. “We’ll look into this slowly. For now, you can stay here and help look after Xiaomeng. Just don’t go wandering around. You’re technically a wanted criminal right now. It’d be bad press.”

Bai Suxin looked at him, a complicated expression on her face. “Thank you,” she murmured.

“Yay!” Su Xiaomeng cheered. “I love being with Sister Bai! I actually went to find her today because I wanted to go shopping with her… and then we got ambushed! Boohoo~ I haven’t even been to the malls in Tianhai City yet.”

Su Mingxuan sighed as he knew this girl too well. “Fine,” he said, pinching her cheek. “I’ll take you next time. As for your Sister Bai, she can go out if she wants—but make sure she disguises herself when she does.”

“Hehe~ Brother Mingxuan, you’re the best!” Su Xiaomeng grinned.

Even Bai Suxin looked at him gratefully, those eyes shining with tears and tenderness. Her gaze made Su Mingxuan’s heart itch a little.

He checked the time, seemed to recall something, and said, “Xiaomeng’s school starts in a few days. The transfer paperwork should be done soon. When that happens, you can take her to school.”

He’d been running around nonstop, barely had time for himself. With someone readily available, it was only natural to delegate. Bai Suxin nodded. After chatting a bit longer, the three of them went off to rest.

Su Xiaomeng normally loved sleeping with her Brother, but with Sister Bai around tonight, she was too shy to ask. So she went back to her own room with Bai Suxin.

Su Mingxuan returned to his study and opened a book. Reading for an hour or two every day had become a habit. He had no idea how much time passed, but just as his neck started to feel sore, his door creaked open.

A figure tiptoed into the room.

Su Mingxuan: “…”

Again? Not worried Sister Bai will catch you?

He chuckled inwardly but didn’t say anything, staying focused on his book. He was always very concentrated when doing things, not easily distracted.

Soon, a pair of trembling arms gently wrapped around his waist.

Su Mingxuan turned another page… wait. Something felt off. Xiaomeng wasn’t this… soft.

He turned his head.

“Bai—Bai… Miss Bai?”

Su Mingxuan was startled, clearly caught off guard. “What—what are you doing here?”

Bai Suxin’s face was tinged with pink, her heartbeat pounding in her chest, but her eyes were steady and resolute. She looked at Su Mingxuan and said seriously, “I came… to thank you.”

Su Mingxuan: “…”

What?

“Thank me… for what?” His tone was full of disbelief.

“Thank you… for saving me again and again. For taking me in when I had nowhere to go. And most of all, for giving me the strength and hope to keep living,” she whispered.

No one who hadn’t lived her life could understand how much those things meant to her. That’s why she wanted to repay him with something just as precious—because this was all she had left to offer.

Looking into her gem-like eyes, Su Mingxuan seemed to understand what she meant.

“Uh… this doesn’t seem quite appropriate,” he said awkwardly.

“A kindness from the Lord should be repaid with all one has,” Bai Suxin said softly, face flushing.

“Ah… your kindness is too overwhelming,” Su Mingxuan murmured with a sigh.

His book, however, was already tossed aside in the blink of an eye.

Bai Suxin gave him a shy smile, her lips parting. “Su Mingxuan… what are you waiting for?”

The next moment, the clouds veiled the moon, and all was left unspoken.
