Me, A Villain! Is It So Wrong To Live off The Heroines?
Chapter 40 - I Didn't... Betray My Country!

Chapter 040: I Didn’t… Betray My Country!

Su Mingxuan felt oddly conflicted. Honestly, while Bai Suxin was undeniably beautiful—on par with even An Mushui and the others—he never had a good impression of her.

Maybe it was that first impression; from the start, he always felt like she was connected to a Child of Fate, that she was a jinx. And now, having angered one, she was a genuine bad-luck magnet.

So, when necessary, Su Mingxuan didn’t mind venting a little frustration on her. And how he chose to vent? Well, he’d cross that bridge when he got there.

With that thought in mind, his expression darkened as he slowly walked toward her. Seeing him approach, Bai Suxin’s face turned alternately red and pale, that hint of sorrow returning to her eyes. She understood full well that now that he’d brought her back, there was no escaping his grasp.

In truth, she knew even if she ran again, what would be the point? She’d be caught eventually, no matter who came for her. The outcome would be the same—her fate would be tragic.

If that’s how it was going to be, then maybe it was better to stay with Su Mingxuan. After all… he had saved her.

And she did have some feelings for him, didn’t she? So, when he said he was taking her with him, a small part of her had felt happy. At least now… she could cling to a powerful backer and wouldn’t have to live in constant fear anymore.

Even if there was a price to pay, if the person she owed it to was Su Mingxuan, then maybe she could accept that more easily.

Thinking this, Bai Suxin suddenly closed her eyes, cheeks flushing red. Even her hands, which had been tightly gripping the blanket, slowly relaxed.

Su Mingxuan: “???”

What’s going on? She’s just giving up like that?

But at that exact moment, Xiaomeng’s voice rang from inside the bathroom. “Sister Bai, I forgot my towel and bathrobe! Can you bring them to me?”

Bai Suxin froze.

How was she supposed to bring them? She hadn’t even managed to get dressed herself before Su Mingxuan barged in, scaring her into hiding under the covers. Now she was like a clay idol fording a river—powerless to help herself.

She lay there without moving, and Su Mingxuan blinked, then said with mock seriousness, “Didn’t you hear what Xiaomeng said? Go get her the towel. What kind of big sister are you if you can’t do a simple thing like that?”

Bai Suxin bit her lip, her grip on the blanket tightening again and still didn’t move.

“Sister Bai?” Xiaomeng called out again from inside.

Bai Suxin knew she couldn’t keep avoiding this. Blushing hard, she finally called out, “Xiaomeng, don’t worry… just give me a second.”

“Okay,” Xiaomeng answered.

Then Bai Suxin looked toward Su Mingxuan with a pleading expression. “Young Master Su…” Her eyes said more than her words ever could.

Su Mingxuan couldn’t help but chuckle and shook his head. He decided not to mess with her anymore. Tucking the pill box away, he turned and left the room.

He returned to his own bedroom, took a quick shower, dressed, and then headed to the first-floor dining room where Xiaomeng and Bai Suxin were already there.

As soon as he entered, Xiaomeng waved at him. “Brother Mingxuan, sit here!” She patted the seat next to her sweetly.

Su Mingxuan smiled and walked over. It was a long rectangular table that could seat over twenty people, but realistically, very few ever sat at it. After all, just getting into this estate required qualifications.

Once Su Mingxuan sat down, Bai Suxin’s face flushed slightly. No one knew what she was thinking.

Soon, the maids brought out their dinner. The beautifully plated dishes instantly whetted Xiaomeng’s appetite. As soon as they were laid down, she eagerly picked up her chopsticks and started digging in.

Su Mingxuan found her adorable. He hadn’t eaten all day either and was starving, but he still ate with grace. Growing up in the Su family, he’d long since developed refined table manners. Xiaomeng, however, was the exception to the rule.

Midway through the meal, Xiaomeng suddenly looked up and asked, “Oh right, Sister Bai… why did those people say you betrayed the country? You’re so kind, you’d never do something like that! Why are you always on the run, and why do so many people want to kill you?”

Hearing that, Su Mingxuan also turned to look at her. He had the same question. What had this jinx of a woman done to draw such hatred?

Under their stares, a flicker of sadness crossed Bai Suxin’s face. She lowered her head, tears sliding silently down her cheeks.

“Sister…” Xiaomeng looked stunned, then said gently, “If it’s too painful, you don’t have to talk about it.”

Bai Suxin quickly shook her head. “I’ve always hoped that one day, I could tell someone the truth… but no one would believe me, and no one ever tried to help.” Her voice was filled with hopelessness.

No one knew what kind of life she’d endured these past few years.

“I believe you, Sister,” Xiaomeng said seriously.

“Thank you, Xiaomeng,” Bai Suxin smiled softly, touched. But the next second, her expression fell again. She bowed her head and murmured, “I didn’t… betray my country. I was born here. This nation is like my mother. How could I ever betray her?”

Su Mingxuan’s eyes lit up with surprise.

Neither of them interrupted. They just listened in silence.

“It all started five years ago,” Bai Suxin said quietly. “The Bai family oversees four special divisions—Heaven, Earth, Profound, and Yellow. Of them, Heaven is the most powerful. As a Bai family member, I naturally joined the Heaven Division.”

“But because of my frail body, I couldn’t go on missions. Instead, I served as an intelligence officer. All kinds of intel were processed by my department before being distributed.”

That’s kind of impressive, Su Mingxuan thought. In ancient times, she would’ve been an imperial spy.

No wonder she said she’d seen him in the capital before. With her position, whose data couldn’t she access?

As Su Mingxuan mulled over this, Bai Suxin continued, “The Wolf Fang and Falcon Squads were elite units under Heaven Division. I was in charge of relaying all their operations. Their leader, Ye Tian… he even hoped that my family would marry me off to him.”

At that moment, Bai Suxin snuck a glance at Su Mingxuan.

She didn’t even know why she did it.

She just… wanted to see how he’d react.

(TL: Just an interesting fact here. You should have read Yellow on the rank along with Earth, Heaven, Profound and Yellow. Why “黄” (Yellow)? In ancient Chinese cosmology and philosophy, particularly from Daoist and Confucian traditions, yellow is not just a color—it represents something central and supreme.)
