Chapter 509: Three Daughters
Chapter 509: Chapter 509: Three Daughters
Chu’s mother had been silent, but once she spoke, everyone grew even more surprised.
However, what she said next made everyone’s scalp tingle.
Chu’s mother sobbed, "Actually, we originally had three daughters..."
Wenru felt something was off as soon as she heard this.
Because she had heard from Zhou Yiran that Chu Xi only had two sisters.
How could there suddenly be another one?
Wenru couldn’t help but look towards Zhou Yiran.
Zhou Yiran was also confused, "Mom, when did you have three daughters? Isn’t it just the two of us?"
"No..."
Chu’s mother shook her head weakly, too ashamed to lift her head as she said hoarsely, "At first, we had three daughters..."
Zhou Yiran asked in astonishment, "Then where is the other daughter?"
Chu’s mother covered her face with her hands, her crying growing louder.
Chu’s father simply turned his head away, turning his back on the crowd, as if by doing so he wouldn’t be seen.
Jiangli watched them impassively.
Listening to Chu’s mother, it was true that they originally had three daughters.
F City, bordered by the sea, the Chu Family was originally from a small mountain village on the edge of F City, nestled between mountains and sea.
Back then, transportation was underdeveloped, everything was restricted, no one went out to work, and everybody stayed in their own villages, living off the land and sea.
All the people in the village wanted to have more sons—more hands to work the fields and fish, more laborers.
Traditions handed down from ancient times made the people in the mountains more conservative, valuing sons over daughters.
Chu’s mother was bartered for half a pig, brought into the Chu Family when she was just eighteen, strong and healthy. Shortly after entering the Chu’s doorstep, she became pregnant.
Chu’s father and the Chu Family were all beaming with joy.
They were looking forward to Chu’s mother giving birth to a healthy, chubby boy.
But, to everyone’s surprise, Chu’s mother gave birth to three daughters in succession.
At first, after the first and second daughters, it was still bearable for Chu’s in-laws.
But when the third daughter was born, the Chu Family’s house was turned upside down; everyone said Chu’s mother was useless for not being able to have a son.
Chu’s mother didn’t understand the spirit of defiance; she was confused and felt quite guilty.
Since this generation of the Chu Family had only one son—Chu’s father—and now even a son couldn’t be produced, they became increasingly harsh with Chu’s mother, urging her to keep bearing children until she had a son.
Just then, the new family planning policy came down. It was more lenient at the beginning—one could have a third child if the first two were girls.
But the Chu Family already had three daughters, and higher-ups simply didn’t allow them to have another child.
Over this matter, the Chu Family caused a ruckus, unsettling the peaceful village, their complaints unceasing.
The children were frightened by the constant uproar, crying day and night.
Chu’s mother, with her children in tow, didn’t know what to do and could only cry.
She forgot how long she cried, or how much time passed until the in-laws suddenly brought back a one-eyed, goateed charlatan, claiming he was a local master with a reputation for effectiveness, saying he could help them have another child.
The Chu Family was tempted and invited the man over.
"What did he do?" Jiangli frowned slightly as he asked.
Chu’s mother licked her chapped lips and sneakily glanced at Chu’s father.
But Chu’s father didn’t dare to turn his head.
She had no choice but to bite the bullet and sob, "He, he told us that our family was fated to only have daughters in this generation, and if we didn’t change our fate, we would keep having daughters. He said there was only one way to change our fate..."
Zhou Yiran’s heart clenched, "What way?"
She asked nervously and, seeing Chu’s mother’s expression, a bad premonition formed in her heart.
That method was certainly something they would not be able to accept.
