Chapter 54: Chapter 43: Escalation of Events
Master Wang had thought he was in for a free ride on the central elevator.
Little did he know;
they were going to take the fire escape again.
In the darkness, the silhouettes of seven people with various lighting equipment moved downward through the dark fire escape in a 2-3-2 formation.
Captain Lingtong and a fully armed burly military officer were in front, Wang Jixuan, Zhou Zhengde, and that female officer in the middle, with Zheng Shiduo and another burly man covering the rear.
The seven of them carried a large amount of ammunition and emergency medical supplies, with the two burly officers carrying the ’best sniper rifles in the village’ – two shoulder-fired multi-launch rocket launchers.
Zhou Zhengde wore a lightweight trigger-activated protective suit. The movements of his joints were unhindered, and his skeletal muscles were wrapped in a thin layer of composite material, making him look bloated by two sizes.
Compared to Zhengde, Wang Jixuan and Zheng Shiduo were much more fatigued.
Each of them carried a huge black metal box, each weighing sixty to seventy kilograms.
This was Captain Lingtong’s specific equipment.
—Because the stairs in the fire escape were old and relatively narrow, the two all-terrain large robotic dogs could not enter the current passage, so this hefty task had to be assigned to the two of them.
Wang Jixuan additionally carried a small caliber sniper rifle and an automatic rifle.
C-level Spirit Ability User Zheng Shiduo was not equipped with any weapons... he had enough confidence in Captain Lingtong’s capabilities.
At the very front of the team,
tiny spotlights of moderate brightness were mounted on either shoulder of Lingtong.
The fully armed burly officer next to her held a stun gun in his left hand and a all-terrain detection radar in his right, meticulously observing everything around them.
Zhou Zhengde muttered, "Mu Liang, how long will it take us to get down there?"
"At our current pace, about two more hours."
Wang Jixuan whispered a reminder:
"Take breaks if you’re tired, otherwise your legs will keep shaking, and it might come to combat on our way down."
"I’m not really tired."
Zhou Zhengde pointed at the ’swimming rings’ on his body:
"It’s just that I feel like a bread loaf kept under nitrogen... I’m a gloriously retired soldier, and I’ve never stopped training."
Zheng Shiduo chuckled from behind, "Heh, no wonder Young Master Zhou is in such great shape."
The burly man beside Zheng Shiduo twitched his mouth, thinking about the object that guy was carrying, and consciously moved away from him...
Zheng Shiduo contacted on the radio channel:
"Captain Lingtong, could I request a change in position? I want to get closer to Group Leader Mu."
Wang Jixuan felt a little odd hearing the sounds coming from both his earpiece and beside him.
Captain Lingtong instructed, "You two, try to maintain your distance, the structure here is not very stable, and you two are carrying too much weight."
"Roger that!"
The female officer walking next to Zhou Zhengde stopped to wait, and Zheng Shiduo, carrying the metal box, hurried forward a few steps.
Green pupils flickered in Zheng Shiduo’s eyes, obviously adapted to the environment.
Zheng Shiduo took the initiative to walk ahead of Zhou Zhengde and Mu Liang, making sure his every move was visible in their light and line of sight.
—He was clearly trying to show that he had no ill intentions.
"Group Leader Mu, can you use telepathy? That way they can’t hear how we plan on destroying the world."
"It seems I can’t."
"Alright, then we’ll keep our voices low."
Captain Lingtong’s voice came through the earpiece, "You can’t remove your earpiece during the operation."
"Alright, alright!"
Zheng Shiduo rolled his eyes and then turned to Wang Jixuan, pointing at Lingtong, making a grotesquely evil face.
Zhou Zhengde almost laughed out loud.
Wang Jixuan himself did not relax at all, ready to strike at full force at any moment.
No way around it, being close to Zheng Shiduo, Wang Jixuan’s Spiritual Sense kept jumping nonstop.
Zheng Shiduo, unable to find a suitable topic, then blurted out:
"Captain Lingtong, why can’t we just use the elevator?"
A small circular hole opened behind Lingtong’s shoulder, and a bee-shaped drone flew out.
The drone spiraled upwards, arriving in front of the trio, and emitted several beams from its tail, forming a blurry display screen.
The screen showed a cross-section of the Fortress, revealing all 49 floors, including the complex tunnels below them, with several points twinkling faintly over them.
Lingtong explained calmly:
"This is the data synchronized with the internal monitoring system of the Fortress, sourced from the frontline command center."
"Six hours ago, there were thirty-eight Spirit Ability Users inside the Fortress."
"Half an hour ago, there were fifty-four Spirit Ability Users in the Fortress, with unidentified newly added Spirit Ability Users, all elevators under their close surveillance."
Wang Jixuan and Zhou Zhengde exchanged glances, both looking quite somber.
"What?" Zheng Shiduo frowned, "What’s going on? Is Kong Nu really trying to make big news?"
Lingtong simply stated, "Current assessment, Fortress No. 76’s Spirit Energy is out of control at level 3, thus, the Fortress Special Cleanup Regulation is applicable. I will kill any Spirit Ability Users attempting to attack us, as well as the armed forces under their control."
"Level 3 event? Wasn’t it just a level 2 event before! Wait! I need to contact Professor Zhuang!"
Zheng Shiduo hastily added:
"Every C-level Spirit Ability User is a precious combat resource, they are not like expendable D or E levels! Captain Lingtong, you’ve always been heavy-handed! Let me contact old Zhuang!"
"You’re currently unable to contact any Spirit Ability Users or organizations, unless you want me to eliminate you right now."
Captain Lingtong’s voice was calm yet icy.
Zheng Shiduo’s forehead, heart, and various joints suddenly had more than a dozen red dots appear on them.
