Chapter 41: 1,000,000 Lifespan!

[Lifespan: 45/1,102,850]

A Lifespan well over a million!

The only reason Zar had been belating the spending of so much Lifespan was because he felt that the commotion caused might alert more than he wanted to. If Direct and Grand Elders were to fly over, he wasn’t confident in being able to stay hidden under the discerning eyes of above Body Integration Realm powerhouses.

Walking out of his house in a somewhat pleasant yet complicated mood, Zar saw a beautiful, fairy-like woman quietly waiting outside his courtyard gates. She had long, flowing black hair and eyes that shimmered like mystical pools of liquid. But there was also this coldness about her — a trait that repelled those daring enough to stare too long at her.

Who else could it be but Hua Ling?

[Hua Ling (Nascent Soul 9th Layer) 46/1110/4870]

Zar raised a brow.

’She has broken through so many times in such a short time frame,’ he thought inquisitively. ’I assume this has something to do with her increase in Maximum Lifespan? A Lifespan that’s well into the Body Integration Realm now.’

Curious, he spoke first:

"Has anything good happened to you as of late, Senior Sister Hua? Because you’re practically glowing."

Hua Ling nodded before matching his pace on a stroll outside his courtyard.

"It’s been a few years, Junior Brother Zar, aren’t you going to ask how I’ve been? Getting straight to the interrogations makes me believe that you no longer care about me..."

"How could that be, Senior Sister?" Zar replied defensively. "It’s just that you’re so stunning as of late that I felt it to be pointless to ask how you’ve been. After all, looking like that, you must be doing wonderfully!"

Hua Ling showed a small crimson blush, a bit surprised by his flirtatious words.

"You... flirt..." she murmured.

"???"

’What did I say?’

One might think that for a middle-aged man like himself, he was incredibly dense.

And they’d be correct...

*Tap, Tap*

Stepping onto the water of a beautiful pond, Hua Ling went a ways out before turning around. Under the reflected sun rays, she glistened, her beauty truly something to awe at.

"Junior Brother Zar, if I were to ask you to be my Cultivation Partner, would you accept?"

Her monumental question came out of the blue, taking Zar by surprise. But like the last time she asked, all he could do was shake his head apologetically.

"I’m sorry, Senior Sister, but I genuinely believe that someone like me isn’t worthy of you," he explained. "You’re not only a flower that stands out even amongst the prettiest of flowers, you’re also a supreme talent of the Blazing Sun Sect. Whereas I’m struggling to even enter the Core Formation Realm.

We are... of two completely different worlds."

Sadness marred Hua Ling’s beautiful features, but to really set the reality of the matter in, Zar added, "When you reach the peak of your life, I will already have long since become the bones and soil beneath your feet. And I... I can’t in good conscience do that to you."

He couldn’t do it to himself.

Hua Ling’s sadness was clear as day, with her normal indifference nowhere to be seen. And though she understood what he was saying, that didn’t make it hurt any less.

"Junior Brother Zar," she suddenly said, revealing a loving smile that shone brighter than the giant ball of fire above. "You may not believe in yourself, but I do. With every fiber of my being, I know that you’ll live a very long and prosperous life. And even if I can’t be by your side right now, I’ll keep on pursuing you, because I know in my heart that you’re the only one for me."

Zar looked into her resolute eyes and instantly realized that nothing he could say would convince her to give up on him.

A long sigh left his lips before he walked atop the pond’s water with Hua Ling. Her smile grew warmer as she strode alongside him, staying just close enough to smell the wonderful earthy fragrance that he gave off.

It soothed her. Made her happy.

She wished they could just stay side-by-side forever...

After around half an hour of walking and talking, Zar finally heard from Hua Ling that she ventured out of the Sect some time ago. And while carrying out the Capture Mission of an Evil Yokai Spirit kidnapping little girls of a large village, she ended up finding the place where the little girls were being kept.

It was a dark and wet cave that she found.

But before she could go in, an old woman of unfathomable strength descended from the heavens. She was above even the Body Integration Realm, with her power rivaling Heaven and Earth. And apparently, after having a nervous discussion with this old woman, Hua Ling learned that she had a great, great granddaughter in this village.

That same granddaughter was taken by the Evil Yokai.

And seeing as Hua Ling was the one who vanquished the Yokai and discovered its Secret Lair, the old woman granted her a wish.

Naturally, Hua Ling wished for strength.

The old woman smiled after seeing something familiar igniting deep within the pretty young woman, and with a wave of a hand, she used incomprehensible methods to infuse a higher-grade Spiritual Root into Hua Ling. It replaced her old double-unit Spiritual Root with a single-unit Spiritual Root, effectively quadrupling her cultivation talent and doubling her Lifespan.

What the old woman did should’ve been impossible by the standards of the Elemental Nations, and yet it still happened...

Unthinkable.

The old woman then took her great, great granddaughter and left in a pillar of light beaming to the heavens above.

’That’s one hell of a fortuitous encounter!’ Zar thought while outwardly displaying awe.

By the time they parted ways, Hua Ling was radiating glee as she recalled time and time again the amazed way he looked at her.

Meanwhile, Zar, who had just entered Valley Master Yu’s courtyard, scratched his neck.

Women really were so perplexing...

’Why was I born so handsome...? Life would’ve been more low-key if I looked more like an Ogre...’

Imagining such a scenario, Zar immediately retracted his statement. Perhaps something more along the lines of average would be better.

There was no need to become something as grotesque as an Ogre...
