Chapter 1213: Chapter 1213: Behind the Door (Major Chapter, Asking for Monthly Pass)
The roaring seawater stirred up a storm, carrying a fierce hurricane that swept through the narrow road beneath the mountains.
This road was almost entirely paved with gravel, seawater seeping through the crevices, washing over the armored vehicles’ wet tracks.
A dense formation of armored vehicles and lightly equipped soldiers wearing exoskeleton armor swiftly advanced along this narrow stone beach.
Jet-black Dragon Cavalry fighters were almost scraping the ground, closely following the soldiers, stacking layer upon layer, resembling heavy dark clouds.
Boom—
The thunderous sound of lightning exploded in the sky, dazzling flashes piercing through the hurricane.
This surging brilliance bloomed between heaven and earth, striking one of the Dragon Cavalry fighters mid-air in an instant.
The aircraft plummeted from the sky, engulfed in flaming fire, crashing into the army below before they had time to retreat.
Boom—
A massive, thunderous roar echoed in everyone’s ears, the howling hurricane still sweeping across the sky as towering sea waves stacked endlessly at the horizon, forming surges tens of meters high.
These waves, driven by the pulsating ocean and the powerful winds, rushed rapidly towards the narrow stone beach.
Behind these waves, new ones emerged endlessly from the sea, surging forward with irresistible force, slamming toward the shore.
Boom—
Another bolt of lightning struck the sky, followed by an endless series of identical explosions.
Brilliant electric lights scattered across the sky and sea in dense clusters.
Several Dragon Cavalry fighters and a mecha were ignited in flames, crashing into the ground and into the crowd.
The howling wind grew louder, and the layer upon layer of waves drew closer and closer.
The soldiers, marching forward with confusion, halted their steps, raised their heads, and gazed at the enraged ocean, at the endless waves illuminated by the lightning’s glow crashing onto the blackened sea.
Silence enveloped the stone beach—amidst the deafening sounds of the storm and nature’s fury, human voices could scarcely be heard.
Bang—
The leading wave, like a gigantic hand reaching out from the ocean, suddenly slammed down on the people standing on the stone beach.
Boom—
The tremendous roar reverberated once again between heaven and earth.
Everyone looked up at the sky—a golden barrier enveloped the entire stone beach. The fierce waves crashed against the barrier, shattering into countless scattered droplets.
"Move forward swiftly, pass through quickly."
Boom—
"Move forward swiftly, pass through quickly."
Boom—
Wave after wave slammed onto the barrier, roaring like thunder. The orders, intertwined with the crashing sounds, echoed through loudspeakers, urging the soldiers to continue advancing.
The soldiers, densely packed, shifted their gaze from the golden barrier, lowered their heads, and stumbled forward across the seawater-soaked stone beach, their steps faltering.
Roaring armored vehicles rolled forward, their metallic tracks crushing the gravel, cutting through the icy seawater, advancing rapidly alongside the crowd.
——
A red, spindle-shaped fighter jet landed in front of the Seraphim mecha group. He Ao had just opened the cabin door and stepped out when a thin, young man dashed forward.
He saluted He Ao briskly and quickly reported, "Commander Suote, everything is prepared. We’ve successfully met with the Nolanka Group convoy and acquired the exoskeleton armor alongside some construction robots from them."
"Nolanka Group?"
Xiya, who had stepped out from behind He Ao, slightly hesitated and asked in puzzlement.
The thin young man glanced at He Ao and calmly explained, "Commander Suote instructed me to wait in the southern region of the Northern Gate, suspecting a convoy might pass through. Before encountering the convoy, we didn’t know they were from Nolanka Group."
"The weapons originally came from Limen City,"
He Ao said casually, "This convoy was initially traveling from Yilan City to Limen City, carrying newly purchased exoskeleton armor and construction machinery for Limen’s City Defense Army. After understanding our situation, Nolanka Group contacted the convoy and redirected their supplies to prioritize us."
"I see,"
Xiya nodded slightly, "I’ve heard of Nolanka Group’s exoskeleton armor—it’s simple to operate, easy to master, and incredibly powerful. With these armors, we can further narrow the weaponry gap between us and the mercenary corps."
She didn’t question why Nolanka Group supported them, nor how they became aware of their circumstances.
Throughout the journey, she felt that everything the ’Suote’ in front of her did, acquiring any resource or forging any connection, seemed justified.
"Indeed,"
He Ao nodded lightly, agreeing with Xiya’s words. He turned to the thin young man and asked softly, "How’s the convoy from Nolanka Group holding up?"
"They’ve already begun their return journey to Minte City,"
The thin young man promptly replied, "I directed them to several Wanderer Camps and assigned two Wilderness Wanderer guides to lead the way. If they can’t successfully return to Minte City, they can rest at one of those camps."
"Good work."
He Ao looked at the thin young man, nodding appreciatively. This young man was Orey, whom He Ao rescued at the North City Command Center.
"It was just following the emergency plan left by the commander,"
Orey replied immediately.
"Call me Suote."
He Ao looked at Orey and said calmly, "Even with the same plan, some execute it well, and others don’t. You did well,"
He glanced at the densely packed mechas ahead and the faintly visible massive canyon behind them. "Notify everyone to enter the Northern Gate and start constructing fortifications as per the system’s blueprint requirements."
"Yes, Commander!"
Orey straightened his posture immediately.
He Ao glanced at Orey but didn’t bother correcting the title. Holding a jade box, he stepped onto the snow, advancing into the mecha group as he asked, "Did we encounter the Wilderness Wanderer coalition?"
Upon hearing this, the fatigued Xiya walking beside He Ao suddenly lit up with a hint of excitement, her footsteps becoming lighter.
"We did, Commander."
Orey followed behind He Ao and calmly explained, "Their main forces are stationed on the slopes south of the Northern Gate, not far from our current position."
"Have we established contact with them?"
He Ao asked softly, "Take me to them."
"Understood,"
Orey nodded, then hesitated before continuing, "Commander, there might be some issues with the Wilderness Wanderer coalition."
He paused momentarily before explaining under He Ao’s questioning gaze, "The highest-ranking commander of the coalition ventured beyond the Northern Gate deep into the Northern Plains. It was he who first discovered the earliest information about the mercenary corps coming from the north."
"He hasn’t returned?"
He Ao turned to Orey, perceiving the implications.
"That’s correct,"
Orey responded softly, "He hasn’t returned, nor has any message come back from him."
Xiya, trailing behind and overhearing this, momentarily froze, her subtly raised feet lowering slowly.
——
"We need to send someone to bring the leader back."
Beside the burning electric heater, a young man’s face was illuminated by fiery light as he spoke quickly.
"You’re going?"
A skinny man sneered, "The north is teeming with mercenary groups. Step outside, you’ll be spotted and riddled with bullets, exposing all our routes."
"I—"
The young man opened his mouth slightly, momentarily speechless.
Just then, a dense rumbling of engines echoed behind them.
Multiple Blazing Angel Mechas carrying heavy equipment were quickly approaching the Northern Gate.
"What’s that group of City Defense Army up to outside?"
A stout man watched the scene, speaking up, "Are they building houses at the Northern Gate?"
"Looks like they’re constructing defensive fortifications,"
Someone interjected from the crowd.
"Those City Defense Army troops plan on intercepting the mercenary corps outside here?"
The stout man hesitated briefly before speaking again, "With just their numbers?"
"Technically, they’re not the City Defense Army,"
Another shorter figure remarked from the crowd, "I’ve checked. Most of them are Wilderness Wanderers. I even spotted members formerly from our own families—they must have been among the Wanderers who escaped the factories of the two major financial groups."
"Suote seems to be someone who keeps his promises,"
The stout man rasped, "My son appears to be safe."
"Promises, huh,"
In the corner, the skinny man glanced toward the mechas overhead and sneered, "Saved them from the factories, only to throw them onto the battlefield to die?"
"Those Wanderers don’t wear shackles. If they want to run, they can run,"
Countered the young man from the side, "Clearly, they’ve chosen to follow Suote—they surely have their reasons to fight."
"How do you know they aren’t wearing shackles?"
The skinny man sneered again, "What if there’s a remote-controlled bomb implanted in their chest? Have you all forgotten how city folk treated us?"
He paused, glancing toward the long, dim canyon beneath the starry night. "In my opinion, if those city folks are trying to hold back the mercenary corps here, we should hurry up and leave, rescuing all our ’compatriots’ under their control, if possible."
"Your excuses for cowardice are far too elaborate,"
The young man snapped coldly, "If we just leave like that, what about the leader?"
"For all we know, the leader’s already dead,"
The skinny man muttered, "Preserving our forces now is what matters the most."
"The leader may not be dead,"
The stout man interjected suddenly, "If he were exposed, the northern mercenary corps would likely have grown suspicious long ago and sent out scouting squads."
"What if the northern mercenary corps’ leader is an idiot?"
The skinny man lit a cigarette, holding it in his mouth, "What if he notices nothing?"
Silence fell among the crowd; in reality, anything was possible.
"If you keep arguing endlessly,"
A cold voice arose from the crowd. A brown-haired woman sitting in the corner removed the long thin cigarette from her mouth, "You’ll just sit here, waiting for the northern mercenary corps to slaughter us all."
"A rational perspective,"
The skinny man rasped through his cigarette, "We should flee right now. After surviving the wilderness for so many years, avoiding conflicts is fundamental to staying alive."
"You can escape for now, but can you outrun fate?"
From the depths of the chilling wind and darkness, a tranquil female voice sounded.
Hearing this, everyone froze slightly, raising their heads in unison.
The electric heater’s glow tinged the surrounding snow with a faint red hue, as a short-haired girl in simple attire emerged from the darkness, her cheeks illuminated by a warm red glimmer.
"Xiya."
The brown-haired woman, sitting with her cigarette, seemed momentarily dazed at the sight of the short-haired girl before her.
The short-haired girl nodded lightly in response, then looked toward the assembled crowd. She took a deep breath and said,
"The two major corporations are intent on destroying us. If any of you could truly accept abandoning everything and fleeing, you would not be sitting here today. It may appear we have choices, but in reality, we have none."
As she finished speaking, heavy footsteps echoed behind her.
A figure cloaked in an oversized fur coat, with faint dried bloodstains visible on the inside, stepped out from behind Xiya. He shook the snow off his shoulders and gazed silently at the crowd before him.
His gaze was deep and icy, akin to a silent predator that could spring into action at any moment, devouring his enemy whole.
Wherever his gaze swept, silence fell—as though fragile lives instinctively recoiled under his oppressive presence, folding inward like subdued feathers.
Xiya glanced briefly at the seated elders before her, then turned back, introducing softly, "This is Mr. Suote."
"It’s an honor to meet you all here,"
He Ao withdrew his gaze, his sharp eyes softening slightly. He looked at the crowd and spoke in a gentle tone, "I trust you’ve stayed here so far because you’ve already made your decisions."
"The enemy’s forces will soon arrive at the Northern Gate. Our time is limited, and much remains to be done."
Standing before the warm flames, his figure cast a shadow against the towering narrow canyon behind him. The faint red glow illuminated his face, transforming him into a heavy wall sealing off this ’giant gate’ connecting the south and north. He regarded the crowd solemnly and said,
"Beyond this gate lies Minte City—an endless wild expanse, your families and camps, and the city of Minte standing steadfast in the snowstorm. Our relatives and friends live there."
"As warriors, we can always choose to escape, but the elderly and children we leave behind have no such choice and must stand alone against the enemy’s slaughter knives."
He lifted his head again, his gaze sweeping across each face. "I cannot promise you victory in this war, but it remains our sole opportunity."
Softening his gaze, he continued, "Our personnel are stretched thin, so any assistance is critical. If you’ve made up your minds, you can find me anytime at the Northern Gate."
With that, he turned, draped in his broad fur coat, walking away into the snow and vanishing swiftly into the deep, dark night.
Xiya withdrew her gaze and turned back to the people sitting around the fire pit. "Everyone, we must make a decision."
The brown-haired woman, seated in the corner, glanced at Xiya, extinguished her cigarette, raised her hand, and said, "I’m in favor of heading to the Northern Gate."
"I agree."
Following a brief silence, the stout man added, "That Suote seems capable. Perhaps he really can win. I’m tired of this endless running for survival."
"I agree."
Raspy approval came from a shorter figure among the crowd.
"I agree."
······
Voices rose one after another in the dark. Finally, all eyes turned to the skinny man sitting in the corner.
"You’re all insane. Do I even have an option to refuse at this point?"
The skinny man looked at them all, rasping dryly, "Fine, I agree."
