Chapter 998: Chapter 617: Recent Developments
Time changes everything. The original fortress city has now taken on vast economic attributes, yet Zhenxi Prefecture City was ultimately forged to face war. As the sun set, the curfew calls from the City Defense Office’s night watchmen started to echo. The bustling noise of carriages and people in every street and alley quickly receded like ebbing tides.
Rows upon rows of houses and staggered buildings with upturned eaves seemed frozen for an eternal moment under the sunset, only to vanish swiftly into the darkness of night.
The long streets, plunged into darkness, became silent and desolate. Merchants and peddlers without a home gathered in the various taverns and inns, where people from all walks of life formed small groups in the halls, shouting loudly, drinking, and making merry.
The sounds of revelry seeped through staircases, passed along corridors, and reached a guest room through its not-so-soundproof wooden door.
The guest room was modest in size, simply decorated, with no incense burning, yet faintly infused with a barely perceivable fragrance.
A large yellow dog squatted at the door of the guest room, blinking its clear yet foolish eyes as it watched the woman pacing back and forth inside.
Due to the oppressive heat, the woman inside was not dressed formally. Her upper body was wrapped in chest cloth, akin to women of the Western Region, while her lower half was adorned with silk undergarments. Her long, jade-like legs intercrossed as she paced, her figure tall and graceful.
Seemingly sensing her restlessness, the yellow dog wagged its tail intermittently, showing faint signs of attempting to appease her.
But alas,
Its attempts at ingratiation had no effect.
As the tall woman paced to where the yellow dog was, she caught it staring at her and, without warning, kicked it indignantly on its squatting backside:
"What are you staring at?"
"Ow..."
The yellow dog yelped in pain, immediately tucking its tail and bounding to the double bed within the room, where it wagged its tail incessantly at the other woman sitting there, whining softly to express its grievance.
The woman sitting by the bed appeared far gentler, her brows and eyes exquisite like art, her waist slender and swaying like willow branches in the wind. Her gemstone-like emerald eyes glanced at the tall woman briefly before extending a delicate hand to soothe the yellow dog’s head in consolation.
The dog squinted its eyes in pleasure, panting twice as it tried to leap onto the bed. However, just as its movement began, the sharp voice of the tall woman rang out:
"Dare to get on the bed, and I’ll break your dog legs!"
"..."
The yellow dog froze at the warning, lying on the floor and rolling onto its belly as a show of submission.
The tall woman sneered coldly at the sight, then resumed pacing the room.
The Western Region woman sitting by the bed watched the tall woman as she paced for several breaths before speaking softly, her words in Dayan language but slightly accented:
"Li Junwu, is your strange behavior today because of what those lunatics shouted this evening?"
At these words, Li Junwu furrowed her brows and cast a glance at the celestial beauty-like Western Region woman, replying disdainfully:
"What does this have to do with you?"
The Western Region woman smiled faintly:
"We’re in the same boat now, so naturally, it concerns me."
Li Junwu halted her pacing, gazing at the Great Desert Goddess with a hint of amused disdain. Her voice was husky:
"Jia Yi, don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to."
The Western Region woman’s emerald eyes flickered briefly as she chuckled lightly:
"You’re so wary of me, yet aren’t you relying on Qilin Wolf’s incarnation for cover? If not for its shielding of this room, your family’s traitors would’ve already found you by now."
With that,
Jia Yi slowly lowered her gaze, leaning down as she reached out to rub the yellow dog’s belly. Her soft chest pressed against her exposed thighs, her voice leisurely:
"How pitiable... Clearly back in your own city, yet you have no one you can trust. All you can do is wait for your father to return triumphantly."
Li Junwu wasn’t angered by these words. She casually swept her loose hair behind her ears and countered sarcastically:
"For all my flaws, Jia Yi, at least I’m better off than you. A so-called Great Desert Goddess hunted across the land like a stray dog, begging for help yet only finding people who want to kill you and feast on your flesh."
Saying so,
A hint of warning flickered across Li Junwu’s sharp black eyes as she stared at Jia Yi’s graceful figure:
"Are you itching for a fight again?"
Jia Yi’s delicate eyes froze slightly, her chest faintly heaving. Forcing herself to calm down, she responded slowly:
"Li Junwu, I don’t want to argue with you. Instead of guessing by yourself, why not tell me everything so we can figure this out together?"
"...."
A warm breeze drifted in from the slightly ajar window, stirring the long hair of the two women amidst the silence.
Recalling the shouts she had heard earlier that evening, Li Junwu bit her lip subtly, her expression complicated, as her slender hand unconsciously clenched into a fist.
Noting the look on her face, Jia Yi frowned slightly and asked softly:
"Those madmen’s shouts—was someone sending you a covert signal?"
"...."
Li Junwu didn’t answer immediately but stepped forward to sit beside the Great Desert Goddess on the bed, lowering her gaze as her long, curled eyelashes trembled faintly.
Sensing the shift in her presence, the yellow dog rolled on the floor once before silently crawling away to lie elsewhere.
Jia Yi gazed at Li Junwu’s profile, remaining silent for a moment before speaking softly:
"So, I guessed correctly?"
Li Junwu took a deep breath and replied with a faint tone:
"Yes..."
"Then why didn’t you respond?"
"Because he’s already dead."
"If he’s dead, then it’s a trap."
The Great Desert Goddess pursed her red lips lightly, gazing at the woman beside her as she inhaled a sharp breath: "There’s no need for us to take that risk now."
Li Junwu pressed her slender fingers together, exerting a faint pressure,
