Chapter 720 - 450 Failure

Chapter 720: Chapter 450 Failure

In the towering mountains where the southern border of the Dayan Empire met the vast wilderness, a sky-piercing tower straddled the horizon.

Here lied one of the sixteen "war fortresses," built by all Sects in the world at the end of the ancient calamity with the Demonic Spirits to guard against their resurgence from the wilderness.

Today, the traces of the other fifteen towers have vanished over the millennia, but this one, restructured into its Sect by Jiatiange, still stands, its cracks at the base telling of the devastation caused by that great disaster.

Gazing down through the windows of a flying gallery at the majestic tower, Zhou Bowen, seated alone and enjoying his tea, couldn’t help but reveal a trace of admiration in his eyes.

No matter how many times he had seen it, he was still deeply moved by this marvel of creation.

The body of the tower was thick and grand, with intricate and overgrown Formation Patterns carved upon it, making the colossal flying beasts that spiraled beside it look like sparrows in comparison.

After watching in silence for several moments, Zhou Bowen slowly withdrew his gaze, sighing softly.

He remembered from ancient texts that the original site of Jiatiange thousands of years ago was also a tower,

a tower even more majestic and large called Jiatiange.

Unfortunately, that location perished in the chaos caused by the Demonic Spirits thousands of years ago, not destroyed by the spirits themselves but in the calamity that followed...

While his thoughts stretched on, they were soon interrupted by a voice that entered the gallery.

"Elder Zhou, the Pavilion Master wishes to see you."

At this message, Zhou Bowen’s wandering gaze snapped into focus, his cheeks quivering as he looked in the direction of the voice.

Although he saw no one, a few dozen yards above, at the base of the tower where he sat in the Qīnghuáng Gallery, Zhou Bowen saw an expansive corridor slowly unfolding.

The spiral stone door contracted and opened, revealing a dark corridor, dozens of yards in diameter.

As a former war fortress, there were many "airports" designed for the landing of flying Demonic Beasts higher up in the tower, and this corridor was clearly one of them.

As his thoughts turned, his Will-spirit reached out, and the Qīnghuáng bird below him let out a sonorous cry, stretching its wings and descending gracefully into the corridor.

With the Qīnghuáng bird settled inside the vast corridor, Zhou Bowen stepped off the gallery, and a man in Jiatiange servant’s uniform approached him with respect,

"Elder Zhou, I will take care of your mount. Please, this way. Elder Li Yang will lead you to the tower’s peak where the Pavilion Master awaits."

Zhou Bowen nodded slightly and followed the man, his sharp, squinting eyes gleaming as they swept the surroundings, revealing a hint of surprise.

The layout inside this dark corridor resembled horse stables in the secular world.

Only, it was much larger than those mundane stables, with dozens of Demonic Beasts bred for war lying side by side behind the dark iron bars on both sides.

And Zhou Bowen remembered that there were dozens of such layers within the tower.

Meaning,

within this single tower alone, there were already thousands of various Demonic Beasts bred for war...

At this thought, a helpless look flashed across Zhou Bowen’s eyes.

Keeping so many different Demonic Beasts, the Pavilion Master was clearly intent on war without having to say so.

But then, reflecting on it, Zhou Bowen reconciled with the notion.

Currently, practically every power within the Dayan Empire was building up arms; if one only focused on making money and resources, they’d end up a granary for others when the real fighting starts.

Caught in these random thoughts, Zhou Bowen was quickly led by the Jiatiange servant out of the corridor and met Elder Li Yang. After several turns through the complex layout of the tower and a long ascent up a spiraling staircase, they finally reached the pinnacle.

Above the tower’s summit, clouds swirled, with intricate Formation Patterns etched into the ground, and a woman in a vast white dress stood at the edge of the summit, peering northward, her dress and hair dancing in the high winds.

Catching a glimpse of the slender silhouette from the side and then looking to Elder Li Yang who stood in place, Zhou Bowen asked softly,

"Brother Li Yang, aren’t you going over?"

Li Yang shook his head gently,

"The Pavilion Master only called for you, I shall take my leave now."

After saying this,

Zhou Bowen watched as the man disappeared from the summit without looking back.

Smacking his lips, Zhou Bowen slowly moved forward and stopped three yards behind the woman. He took out the Spirit Heaven Instrument from the Sumeru Ring, presented it with both hands, and bowed deeply,

"Pavilion Master, this is what the Grand Historian entrusted me to return to you before he died."

"......."

At these words, Tian Yuan slowly turned her gaze, her divine and tranquil eyes locking onto the portly figure of the Mortal Transcendence Elder behind her, but she said nothing.

At this sight, Zhou Bowen felt a sudden sweat drench his back.

Sometimes, silence was more unnerving than words, particularly when one’s conscience was not clear.

Yet he had no choice but to report back.

Fortunately, Tian Yuan’s calm voice soon reached him,

"Did you fail?"

"Yes,"

Zhou Bowen bowed his head lower, standing firm while his heartbeat accelerated in silence.

He somewhat dreaded that the Pavilion Master would say to him, "Since you have failed, why are you still alive?"
