Chapter 47: Mass Murder

"How many waves are in this phase?" Jake asked.

{Hmm, a good question. There are five, each stronger than the next. The second one was not supposed to be this bad, but your hint is what buffed the difficulty.}

Jake froze hearing what the Whisper said. They had three more waves after this, each more terrifying than the last.

"How can you do this? Five waves? We are barely surviving," Jake yelled.

{Enough talk for now, enjoy your survival.} The Whisper vanished after saying that. Jake turned to look at the chaos that was happening—the people dying. If he let this continue, could he really keep living?

He had a solution to all of it, but was he willing to take out his dragon this early in the game? Was he really willing to expose his greatest strength for the sake of others?

’No, I can’t do it. If Drake comes out here and they survive, other Chosen will know, and once they do, it’s over for me.’ Jake decided he would give it his all here, but he wasn’t going to allow Drake out. He couldn’t risk it.

Instead, he summoned the Tainted. Immediately it came out, it rushed like crazy, charging into the ogres.

"System, what level am I on now?" Jake asked.

[Level 15, you’ve racked up quite the EXP and stat points.]

If Jake recalled properly, he was at level ten when this whole thing started, but now he was at fifteen. That meant he had about fifteen slots open now.

"Use Rise on all the dead ogres you can," he said immediately. Magic circles formed around fifteen ogres. They sunk into the ground and came out looking different—their skin was now pitch black, and their eyes burned with a dark green flame.

Everyone was shocked to see them, thinking more monsters had come, but they immediately started attacking the ogres.

Due to their state as ogres, they couldn’t be killed by a simple sword slash, so they took down the other ogres without issue.

With the presence of the Tainted and the ogres, the battle began flowing in their favor. Jake stood at one spot watching it all happen. He would love to join the battle now, but there wasn’t a point. He was heavily trying to conserve his mana to go as long as possible.

Unlike Crypt, the rest of his summons were using his own mana. The brutal battle dragged on for another twenty minutes, and finally, the ogres were defeated—over two hundred ogres in total.

Immediately the battle ended, Jake collapsed to his knees, struggling to breathe, suffering from mana exhaustion, having pushed his mana to the extreme.

He had no choice but to unsummon all of them except Crypt. Ophelia wanted to run up to him, but as she looked down, all she could see was blood at her feet.

Jake looked over at her and saw how frightened she was, feeling a little bit guilty. No one would want a girl her age to witness this, but sadly, this was the situation they were in.

{Seems like the battle has ended. More souls are lost, over two hundred dead—a little bit more than I expected.}

When the Whisper spoke, Jake finally realized how many people had died in this battle now—two hundred. He raised his head and looked around, finally getting the whole image of what had happened.

When he was busy talking, summoning, and standing around, more lives were taken than in the beginning.

The Whisper snapped its fingers, and all the blood vanished along with the bodies.

{The next wave comes in ten minutes,} the Whisper said before vanishing.

Its words were the final string. Fewer than a hundred people were left. The horror that they had gone through just now finally made them snap. There was no holding back anymore—half of them rushed toward the girl.

"Crypt, get her!" Jake yelled. Crypt moved fast, intercepting. He grabbed her and Ophelia and dashed out of there, getting next to Jake.

"Stop! You have to listen!" Jake tried to make them understand. He tried to get through, but it didn’t work.

"Fuck you."

"Screw you, die."

Their yells and screams overshadowed his voice. Out of everyone here, the only two that didn’t attack or glare at the girl from a distance were the man and the guild master. But they also didn’t help. They were at their wits’ end. They didn’t want to kill the girl, but they weren’t ready to help anymore.

Jake saw the adventurers coming toward him. He looked in their eyes and could see that nothing remained there except rage and madness.

"I’m sorry," Jake said and closed his eyes. "Drake, come out," he said in a low tone.

Out of nowhere, a massive magical circle appeared, and Drake rose from it. His mouth opened already. He used flame breath, and in two seconds, a blast of flames roasted everyone standing there, killing them on the spot.

"It didn’t have to be this way. Everyone just had to listen, for goodness’ sake!" Jake yelled, spit flying from his mouth, his eyes red.

He hated himself for what he did. He couldn’t bring out the dragon to protect them, yet he was able to bring it out to kill them all. What demon had he become?

[Don’t hate yourself too much. You didn’t have a choice.]

"I did. I did, and I chose mass murder," Jake said. But then he looked up at the remaining, "But it was my choice at the end. I own it. So I’ll say this again: whoever comes near the girl will die. I’m sorry for what I have done.

I’m sorry that I didn’t use all my strength to try and fight, hiding it until it came to this, I didn’t even try to scare them, i out right killed them, but like I said, anyone that comes near her will die.

There are less than a hundred of us, and I can say we won’t survive it normally—but that changes now.

All of you just have to sit down, do nothing, obey me, and I’ll take care of all the monsters," Jake said.

{Now that’s wonderful.}
