Chapter 46: A question

Immediately they attacked, Jake ordered the undead skeletons to get into place. They immediately moved and blocked the paths, colliding with the adventurers, but they weren’t enough, so Jake went in with Crypt.

They pushed back all the adventurers, but the adventurers were not having it. They needed to take the girl out and secure their freedom.

They attacked to kill, fireballs and ice flew through the air. It was at this point Jake knew there was no stopping them. He ordered the skeletons, as well as Crypt, to kill, and without hesitation they started attacking to kill. Blood splattered everywhere, bodies fell to the ground, dead, unmoving.

The scene stunned everyone as they watched their fellow comrades fall to the ground, and at the center of it was Jake, standing with a spear in hand. But there was no remorse on his face; he bore the weight of his actions without batting an eye.

"No one touches the girl. If you do not like that, come at me." Jake spat out those words. It had finally gotten to the point where his stance had to be pushed through with force.

No one dared move after that. They watched the blood spread across the floor. But their shock and fear were cut short because the monsters started coming in.

They expected Orcs and Goblins, but what came out shattered their will to fight. Ogres marched out, armored and carrying weapons, hundreds of them walking out in their towering heights.

The adventurers began backing down, heading toward the center. A fully grown ogre was at least an intermediate monster with high intellect. To fight a monster like that, you would need to be at least a one-gold star adventurer or a three-silver star.

{Kekekekeke, it seems we had to bring in better monsters. After all, you all got a hint.} The Whisper said.

"Master, that creature is trying to incite rage," Drake said to Jake.

"I know, he wants to make this whole thing harder," Jake said.

The ogres rushed toward the adventurers and the fight began. Jake stayed near the girl again, while Crypt rushed in to fight.

It was only a few minutes in, and the battle turned into a bloody mess. The screams of dying adventurers filled the hall.

An ogre made its way past the adventurers and charged toward Jake. He watched it get close and decided to try something. The ogre swung its massive sword down. Jake put everything he had into blocking the attack.

Clang.

He skidded back a few feet, but he managed to block it. Then he looked the ogre in its eyes and used Infused Perspective. The mind of the ogre wasn’t as strong as that of a man; he immediately broke into its mind and changed its perspective.

"Your fellow ogres are the enemies here. They want to take you down. Kill them." Jake infused that thought into the ogre.

It stood for a few seconds and then turned around, seeing one of its fellow ogres and immediately attacked without wasting a beat. It slashed the head of the unsuspecting ogre and killed it.

"It worked," Jake muttered in happiness. Seeing that he could help in a different way now, he began approaching whichever ogre he could and making them attack their brothers.

But after doing it for about six of them, the eighth finally hit him. He fell to his knees and coughed out a mouthful of blood.

Ophelia tried to run to him, but he raised his hands and told her to stop.

{Kekekekeke, you seem to have forgotten that your path comes with a heavy cost.}

"I didn’t forget," Jake said. He pushed himself up, cleaned the blood from his mouth. "I don’t care about the cost of the path. With it, I’ll be able to help us win and reduce the people who die here," Jake said.

{Hmmmm, you know you could end this all by allowing them all to die, right? That is also a pass for you.}

"Hehe, I don’t think I’ll do that. I’m not a hero, but I’m not going to use my own hands to kill three hundred people.

Also, I don’t think it’s that easy. If anything, what I’ve learned in this time in the trial is that you aren’t straightforward—the whole trial isn’t.

There is a repercussion to everything that happens here, right?" Jake asked.

{Hmm, you are smart. How did you figure that out?}

"It’s really simple. There is really no way to win this trial for me. I don’t even know when the first phase is going to end.

But I have a feeling that the more people that make it to the end of this phase with me alive, the better for me. If not, you wouldn’t have placed all that emphasis on their death, their freedom and all that.

I might be guessing here, but you want to see how many people I—the Hollow Hero—can bring out, right?" Jake asked.

{Hmmmm, this is nice. Congratulations Jake, you are the 1,057th person in the entire world to figure out the structure of the first phase.

It’s something so simple, but the havoc happening all around you stops you from seeing it. As a reward for your understanding, you get to ask one question. No repercussion, no backlash.}

Hearing what he got as a reward, Jake was immediately filled with many questions to ask, things to find out. So he went for one that he really wanted to know.

"Who exactly is the Dark Dragon?"

Whisper heard the question and flew backward a bit, as if trying to get away from Jake.

{Your question is above my jurisdiction, sadly.} He gave a response and said nothing else.

’Should have expected that. Learning about the creator of the trial would definitely not be that easy,’ Jake thought.

"Alright then, what about this. Why did he create the trial instead of just saving us entirely? He seems extremely powerful," Jake said.

{Sigh, if you knew the answers to those questions, you would regret knowing them. Information isn’t always the light that leads the way; it’s also the demon that consumes you.}

"I guess you aren’t answering that then. Fine, my question is....."
