Legendary Necromancer: My First Summon is the Undead Dragon -
Chapter 42: Luscious
Chapter 42: Luscious
The entire guild went quiet when they heard those words. No one spoke for a while. They understood that Jake was the Chosen, and that meant the region—what was happening—this Trial was happening around him and not them. He was the focal point of this.
Jake saw that he had their attention, so he got on a table. He looked around at everyone there and spoke, "The situation that we have found ourselves in is honestly a terrible one, and in ways, the blame comes to me.
I didn’t expect the Trials to begin so early, else I would have stayed away from civilization as a whole to avoid something like this.
But here we are, and we don’t have a choice now. We have to face it."
"We do have a choice. We kill the girl and all this ends, right? We don’t even need to fight whatever monsters it is that the Trial will send," one man spoke. His voice was deep and heavy, resounding through the hall.
His face was covered, a thick finger geared, while his head was bald. He was a towering man over six feet, clad in armor with a battle axe on his back.
He rose from his table and marched toward Jake. The others cleared a path for him as his footsteps resounded. He stopped when he was only two meters away from Jake.
"Everyone here knows the weight of the Trials. It’s something that has been passed on for ages," he said, then spat out a seed that was in his mouth. He moved his hand to his axe, pulled it off his back, and brought it to his side.
"The Trial is no joke. Everyone knows that. And what that creature told us, it’s final. That’s the Whisper. My family once had a Chosen, and they know for certain that the Whisper ain’t to be toyed with.
Those are creatures whose words are as heavy as the sun, as mighty as an untamed wave. Once they speak, it is as they have said, and nothing can stop that.
Everyone heard it speak. We heard it say: her life or ours. Because in a few minutes or so, monsters will charge in here. But we have nowhere to go because we are meant to be close to that girl." He lifted the axe and placed it on his shoulder.
"But you are the Chosen. In this situation, you are the one important factor, so I’ll follow behind for one round. I will not touch the girl. But if we are unable to fight what comes, I will come for her, regardless of what it is you want or what you were told," the man said and turned away.
"I’m sorry, but no matter what it gets to, the girl can’t die," Jake said.
"And why is that?" the man paused and asked. But Jake didn’t reply. He didn’t even try to hint at why; he simply stood there and stared at the man.
"Hmmm," the man groaned and walked away. He got back to his chair and sat down, placing his axe on the table. He sat facing the door.
After that interaction, the air became tense—so tense that it became hard for anyone there to breathe. A few minutes later, those who were on the stairs above came downstairs. It seemed they had received the same information and so came to join the main unit.
Jake sat down on the table, while the girl he was to watch sat not too far from him. His head was bent over as he was in thought, when suddenly someone approached him.
He looked up and saw a tall man with coffee-brown hair and round glasses. The man was dressed in a buttoned shirt and black trousers. He looked at Jake with a soft smile and spoke.
"Hello, my name is Luscious, the Guild Master here—not that it matters anymore, seeing what is happening." He introduced himself, adjusted his glasses a bit, and sat down beside Jake.
"I believe you already know that this situation revolves around you. I know looking at all these strong adventurers tense up over just words spoken by a creature is new to you, but I honestly want you to know that those words that the Whisper spoke are real—of death," Luscious said in a calm manner.
"How did you know that it’s new to me?" Jake asked a straight question.
"Hmm, because someone told me. A lady named Seer. Before you came, she came in and handed a crystal from the Abyss Church. She told me of a new yet ignorant Chosen. Said you were indeed powerful, but you lacked an understanding of the gravity of the issues that exist with the Trials.
She said you’d come for sure—to gather some much-needed information—and here you are. Sad it had to be under these circumstances. The Whisper said we have to kill that girl. But if logic and the past have taught me anything, it is that the Trials are never simple.
I know you know something, but you can’t tell. So here’s the deal: I will stand with you regardless, and I will do anything to get through this, because I have a daughter and a wife I need to get back to.
And honestly, if it means killing everyone, I would. My family means the world to me. So I’m trusting you, Jake, and I hope that my trust in you will pay off." He finished and got up.
Jake didn’t say anything. He simply kept quiet. Never in his life had such pressure been mounted on him before. Never in his life had he had to be the one that decides the life of many people—innocent people. Yet here he was.
He was starting to doubt if this second life he got was really worth it, or if he was played by the goddess. But regardless of that, he was here now, and he had to do what needed to be done.
