Chapter 40: getting their Paths
Chapter 40: getting their Paths
Jake saw the massive walls of Olen, towering tens of feet into the air. The road to the gate was filled with carriages and people leaving and entering Olen. But that wasn’t all, as he noticed some ships flying in the air. Their structure was not exactly the same as water ships—they had been built more aerodynamic to cut through air and fly.
Seer noticed him looking at the ships and she spoke, "Airships, invented by the dwarves. Humans adopted it and began making theirs. It’s the best form of transportation, but the most expensive," she said.
’Dwarves, huh? Nice to know humans aren’t the only intelligent race,’ Jake thought.
As they rode by, people stared at the bruised and battered man running behind the carriage, his footsteps wobbling from left to right, his feet covered in bruises and bleeding. He looked like he would die at any moment.
But no one paid him heed. This sort of thing was so common in Olen that it could be overlooked. People owned slaves, though it had to be legally binding.
And even then, they suffered such treatment. Their rights were minimal.
After a few minutes of slowly riding, they finally made it to the gate where the guards stood. They came up to the carriage, Seer showed them her guild card, and immediately the man stepped back and bowed.
"Welcome, adventurer," he said. She nodded and kept riding. The man didn’t even bat an eye at Rowan at the back or even try to collect documents to verify he was legally her slave.
"Is it normally that easy?" Jake asked.
"No, but for an adventurer with three gold stars, there is no way they will stop her. It’s not right by law, but it’s something of an unspoken rule. Such an adventurer is far worth more than the stress," Rion explained.
"I see," he responded and turned his attention to the city. As soon as they entered, it looked like they had entered a completely different world.
The paved roads, massive houses, arches across the roads—it looked too good for the technology of this world.
"Welcome to Olen," Seer said, looking back inside the carriage. She was about to say something else when suddenly all of them felt a searing pain from their marks, so much that they couldn’t ignore it.
A sudden information shot from the mark up their arms and into their minds. And there they all saw it.
Jake looked at the words written before his eyes:
{The Path of the Broken Logic}
{To understand him is to fall into contradiction}
Jake read it. He didn’t need anyone to tell him that this was his path, and from Seer and Rion’s reaction, they had also gotten theirs.
The information faded away, and their minds returned back to the carriage. The air immediately became heavy. Seer quickly found a place to stop the carriage.
All of them stayed. They didn’t say anything. It was as if a weight had been put on their hearts.
"I guess this is it," Rion said.
"Haha, a partnership short-lived," Seer said.
"So this means seven days," Jake said.
"Seven days until it all falls to nothing. I thought I would be able to at least do some exploration with you, Jake," Rion said.
"We could still go this last seven days," Jake said.
"No, at this point, no Chosen should be together. Honestly, I don’t trust either of you—even Rion, whom I have stayed with for months.
"The people you think you know hit you the hardest. It was fun while it lasted, but all that ends as soon as we get our paths," Seer said.
"So this is it?" Jake asked.
"This is it, Jake," Rion said.
"You have a little to do, Jake. Learn about your path, and also get ready. In seven days... but I’m sure you’ll survive," Seer said.
"Oh, and one thing, Jake—your path is your greatest secret," she added.
The air remained tense. All of them sat there, not moving, for a few minutes. Finally, Rion stood up.
"Seer, I guess I’ll be seeing you around. I need to try and master my path before the time comes," he said and left the carriage, walking away without looking back. He left like he hadn’t spent all that time with Seer.
"I’m guessing you’ll hand the crystal to the guild. I’ll let you be on your way," Jake said and got up. He got out of the carriage; Ophelia and Crypt followed him.
At first, he didn’t think the paths were this big of a deal, but to his surprise, just them getting their paths ended their partnership in an instant.
If it was just him, he would have understood, as he was new to them. But those two had been together for quite a long time, yet they went their separate ways that easily.
He walked down the street, thinking about how the situation just changed. It still felt unreal to him, but he didn’t have time to think about something like that. He could only worry about his own path that had awakened.
"The Path of the Broken Logic," he muttered. "System, do you know anything about this?" he asked.
[Nothing. I’m built for necromancy, sadly, and though I might know some other things, your path is definitely not something that I can understand.]
"This is bad. I have no idea where to start from. I’ve lost the only people that might help me. This is definitely not a good starting point," Jake said.
"You’ll be fine, Jake. Even if it takes longer for you to understand your path, no one will be able to take you down. Or are you forgetting that you have me?" Drakes asked.
"How proud of you. But I guess that’s true. With you, I’m sure I don’t really need to worry. But that doesn’t mean I’ll start allowing it to get to my head. You should know by now that the trials are definitely not something to play with," Jake said.
