Chapter 93: Anchors
Chapter 93: Anchors
With his new guesses on the Gods, Kael felt that many things made sense. It also provided him a way to fight them, but of course, he knew how ridiculous it sounded.
If he tried to harm their faith, he might receive a meteor on his nation all of a sudden. He could actually see that happening, as he didn’t have any divinity to protect him.
Draven’s chuckle brought him out of his thoughts as he answered Kael’s question.
[Not quite right but also not wrong. Faith is one of the main reasons as to why they are Gods. But it’s a different matter on achieving that divinity. It plays a part, but it isn’t the main ingredient.]
’Hmm, well, at least I have gotten one part right so I can work on that. As for the others, I’ll probably end up dead before finding them,’ Kael chuckled.
[That’s true. From what I’ve observed of the current world, they’ve erased most of the history related to achieving divinity. Perhaps there’s a reason behind it, perhaps not.]
Kael raised an eyebrow and asked, ’You don’t know about it?’
[I’m just not sure about it because they’ve erased it even from the Astral World. It seems something serious happened while I was sealed away which led to them destroying that.]
’Probably the War of the Fourth Epoch?’ Kael guessed. ’It’s said Gods used to walk on land but they stopped after the War of the Fourth Epoch.’
[Yes, it’s definitely related to that. Anyways, try to keep your curiosity in check, boy. There are things in this world that you simply can’t bear to know. The knowledge about Gods’ existence and their Anchors isn’t something weaklings like you should know.]
’I guessed that much after almost dying,’ Kael sighed, but then questioned, ’But I don’t understand something. It’s not like I’m some high-IQ individual that only I can come to this conclusion, right? What about others?’
[The fault lies with that lass too. She forgot about not telling the information to others, which ended up with you guessing everything. As for your question, yes, there have been many who guessed it, but there is a force in this world that actively works to erase their memories.]
’Wait? What? You mean...’
[Yes. Even if someone guessed it, that force would be triggered and their memories of that moment would be wiped out or maybe even replaced. That force is a combined work of many Gods, so resisting it is useless unless you’re a high-rank Demi-God.]
’Demi-Gods can endure the burden of this knowledge? Or maybe they can just resist that force?’
[Kind of both. This knowledge is useful even for high-rank Demi-Gods, as they still need Anchors to stabilize themselves. That lass is just an anomaly who doesn’t need an Anchor.]
Hearing that, Kael remembered how there were many churches in the names of heroes of the past. They were worshipped alongside the Goddess for their heroic deeds.
His eyes widened slightly as he realized that most of them were probably still alive. They were using the worship of people to Anchor themselves.
’And it doesn’t matter to the Goddess because she has way too many believers, and since those Demi-Gods are technically under her, it doesn’t matter?’
[I don’t know much about that, since I didn’t have many followers back in the days. And just when my church was about to be established, things happened and I ended up here.]
’I have so many questions,’ Kael wanted to scratch his head in frustration. ’So, why didn’t I just forget stuff about the Gods then?’
[For two reasons. I told you, that lass is a walking anomaly. Don’t even try to apply normal logic to her, because it will always fail. You being in contact with her restricted that force.]
’What about the second reason?’
[Heh, you have my mana within you. How can someone with my bloodline be affected by something like that?]
Kael rolled his eyes and asked, ’Does that mean you’re above the Gods?’
[Not quite. And I think it would be better for you to stop trying to get knowledge on Gods. Remember that just you knowing about them will alert some of them.]
’That’s possible?’
[There’s one bastard whose name, if you even just think, he will know your knowledge and through that connection, he will be able to observe you and hear everything around you. Not to mention, if he wants, he can just teleport to you or kill you through that connection.]
Kael felt a chill down his spine hearing that creepy description.
[Don’t worry. As long as you don’t try to remember his name, he won’t be able to connect with you. But try your best not to casually call out suspicious names in the future.]
’Ain’t this world too dangerous?’ Kael sighed and asked, ’You keep mentioning Anchors of Gods and even Demi-Gods, but Anchor for what? Like, will they get demoted without Anchors?’
[Oh no, there’s something worse than that and I’m sure you are very familiar with it.]
’Huh? What?’
[Corruption!]
’The hell?’ Kael was shocked to the core and couldn’t even speak for a while. His whole assumptions about Corruption seemed to be crumbling down.
He had always thought that if he aimed to become a God-like being, then he would be able to defeat the Corruption and the Apocalypse.
Draven’s words had made his beliefs more firm. But now that he got to know that even Gods could be Corrupted, his reality seemed to have suffered a crack.
He tried to calm his heart and asked, ’What do you mean, old man?’
[Corruption and Apocalypse are much more than you can imagine, boy. Heh, you think just by becoming a God, taking over a few Authorities, you can destroy the Corruption? That’s just ridiculous thinking. Even Primordials like me suffered from it.]
Kael stayed silent for a good while before asking, ’Then, is there anything beyond the Gods?’
[... You really are a persistent one, huh. All I can say is that the room for improvement doesn’t end at Godhood. It is just one of the many steps you need to take to defeat the Apocalypse.]
Kael once again stayed silent for a while before he laughed and said, ’That’s fine then. I just need to go beyond the Gods to achieve my goals. Hehe, the Apocalypse will come to an end.’
[End, huh. What a beautiful word.]
’Old man...’
Before Kael could ask even further, Draven yawned and said,
[I’m going to sleep, so don’t bother. Find out the answers yourself... actually, never mind. Just wait for me and focus on building your nation. I don’t know how you’ll do it, you just need to focus on it. Do not try to probe into Gods, and especially that flame.]
Kael opened his mouth and closed it in speechlessness. He had so many questions, but this old man always liked to be secretive.
He clicked his tongue and said, ’Fine! I’ll try my best to do that.’
[Yeah. And you don’t need to gather followers for me because my situation is very different, and my Anchors are much different. It won’t work.]
’Got it!’
[And you can think about a few things now, as the flame will protect you. But try your best not to speak or do too much.]
’Understood!’
Kael felt like he was a kid who was about to go to school for the first time all alone, and his mother was giving him lectures on things he needed to be careful of.
[I can beat you like your mother too!]
Kael turned even more speechless, wondering if Draven had left behind something inside him to hear his thoughts.
[Whatever. Just remember to tell that lass to be careful of the things she speaks. She’s a high-ranking Demi-God and an anomaly at that, so her presence is both beneficial and harmful to you.]
’Understood, Mom!’
[The day I come out of the seal will be the day I’ll take over your body and run around your nation completely naked.]
Kael choked on his saliva and was going to retort but felt his surroundings shifting. The reality around him changed back to normal and he appeared back in his little home near the Great Storm Tree.
Kiona sat beside him, dazed as if she were dreaming while sitting upright. On the other hand, Rias was sitting not far from him, eyeing him with a strange glint in her eyes.
Kael cursed as soon as he came to his senses, ’Damn you, coward old man.’
[I can still summon lightning, you know.]
Kael really wanted to question the world, ’How the hell is this annoying old man a Primordial Dragon God?’
But there would be no response, so he didn’t bother. He also kept quiet as he considered himself to be a bigger person.
"Kael, how did you change so quickly?" Rias asked in puzzlement as she stared at Kael with her beautiful eyes.
