Chapter 85: Making the house
Chapter 85: Making the house
Kael knew that he was attracted to Rias, and it would actually be odd if he wasn’t attracted to her. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever met, and she was also a very nice person.
But that was it. He just had some goodwill toward her and considered her a good friend who needed his help. And he had no plans to make any further attempt to progress their relationship from a different angle.
After all, she wasn’t a complete person now, and if one day she recovered all her memories and realized that she was suddenly in a relationship she didn’t agree with, she might just kill him.
But it was different when it came to being friends.
Kiona also understood it, so she dropped the topic and went along with him toward the metal rods for their work.
[Master, I’m confused.]
’Woah! Same here!’
[Master...]
’Don’t overthink. I’m just not ready for any serious relationship right now.’
[I see. You must have your reasons, so I won’t probe. But Master, wasn’t this too anticlimactic?]
’Are you also watching movies or what?’ Kael was speechless. ’We are both adults and also aware of each other’s feelings, so why bother going through too much drama?’
[That’s true.]
’Yeah, and she only came out because she felt inferior to Rias. Her sheer presence forced her to confront me. Nothing too surprising.’
[But you are hesitant.]
Kael smiled wryly. ’That I am.’
He shook off those thoughts when they reached a clearing where a small heap of metal rods greeted them.
Without wasting any time, the two of them got to work and began shaping the necessary metal rods. It was all according to Kiona’s plans, and Kael also silently followed her lead.
She had already planned everything and also taken some steps to ensure they could build a proper house, so Kael just followed her words and used his flame control to connect the various rods, and also used his incredible strength to shape them.
Kiona was doing the same, and he could hear the constant hammering sound from her side. Of course, they didn’t have any hammers, so they had to use their fists to shape the rods.
They continued their tiresome work for almost an hour, but they were happy because a major part of the task was done, and they could move on to the next stage.
Kiona wiped the sweat dripping from her forehead down to her cheeks and said with glee, "This will suffice. Now, I’ll make the base with them underground, and you can bring the materials to the site till then."
"Want my help?" Kael asked.
"No, I’ve already left out some space in the necessary positions, so this will work just fine. I also have some paste ready to fill in the gaps," Kiona said with a smile. "I’m also using the wooden logs as beams. Some of them are from the Ironbark Tree, so they can endure a lot."
Kael nodded and walked away, leaving her to her work. The materials were placed in different spots, so he needed to run around a little. The only thing that caused problems was the Sunbathed Liquid Sap, but Kael handled it carefully.
He did that while Kiona busied herself with her part. Soon, he had brought everything except the bricks, so he headed toward them.
The place where they had kept the Blackstone Bricks was nearby, so he didn’t have to walk far, but he still needed to carry them all toward the construction location.
Kael rolled up his sleeves and tightened his grip around the big stack of Blackstone Bricks, each one dense, heavy, and slightly warm to the touch.
The surface of the bricks shimmered faintly under the sunlight, reflecting a dark luster like obsidian infused with molten veins. They weren’t just strong—they were magically resilient, ideal for withstanding lots of environmental threats.
He reached the construction site, where a partial foundation had already begun to take form. Kiona stood at its center, her back slightly hunched as she pressed two metal rods together, sealing them with the faint glow of a reddish-orange paste made from the Sunbathed Liquid Sap.
Her muscles flexed under her sleeveless tunic, dust clinging to her skin as she worked with focused rhythm and quiet precision.
"Perfect timing, Master," she said, not looking up. "Just drop them next to the northern side."
Kael chuckled and obeyed. "You really got the whole blueprint in your head, huh?"
"Of course," Kiona said with pride, finally pausing to wipe sweat from her brow. "The home we build today will one day become the heart of our Nation. Every detail matters."
She leapt out of the foundation pit and landed beside him gracefully, her tail swishing with renewed excitement.
Her lioness ears perked as she surveyed the materials around them—the rods, the wooden beams, the logs Rias had collected, the stone containers filled with water infused with Sunbathed Sap, and the bricks Kael had just delivered.
Kael admired her for a second before getting back to work. "Alright then, Chief Architect. What’s next?"
She smirked. "Let’s build the frame."
Together, they began by laying out the metal rod skeleton that would act as the inner structure of the house. Kiona had already welded many rods underground into a support grid, and now they connected vertical rods to act as support columns, anchoring them deep into the soil.
Kael used his fire affinity to heat and fuse the connections, shaping corners with precise control. The heat flared momentarily with each weld, casting dancing shadows on their dirt-covered clothes and flushed, slightly sunburned faces.
Kael brought over the Ironbark Tree logs, the toughest wood they could harvest aside from the Great Storm Tree. Their bark was dark and lined with a natural metallic sheen, sturdy enough to withstand both storms and powerful beasts.
These were laid over the top of the rods as ceiling beams, fastened in place with a mix of natural resin and melted Blackstone Dust.
"I had no idea Ironbark was this flexible," Kael muttered, twisting a thick beam into place with some difficulty.
"It isn’t," Kiona replied, laughing. "You’re just that strong."
"And you like that," Kael smirked.
"I will like to keep my silence," Kiona said and began focusing intently on the housing again.
