Chapter 75: The Results
Thunder exploded like a cannon right above them, and a giant spear of lightning descended upon the Great Storm Tree. It struck the upper canopy like a divine hammer, setting the sky ablaze with blue fire.
The impact shook the earth. The entire forest lit up in an instant, brighter than day.
Kael felt it, the wild energy surging down the tree, cascading through its veins, bursting down to the roots.
But not all of it went to the tree.
Some of it, like a curious child, strayed.
It leapt to Kael’s construct—his little makeshift rod of root and wood—and it struck.
The lightning arced.
It entered the wood, danced through his hands, and burst downward into the root buried beneath him.
Kael screamed as his body convulsed from the surge. He had almost forgotten about the pain he experienced from the assimilation of Draven’s mana, and this lightning did the job of reminding him.
Every muscle in his body tensed, his heart skipped a beat, and sparks sprayed from his fingertips. His feet dug into the earth, boots nearly melting from the discharge.
And then, just as suddenly as it came, it was gone.
He collapsed to his knees, gasping, shoulders heaving.
But he was still alive. He was very hard to kill.
Smoke curled from his clothes, and his fingers still tingled, but he was smiling.
"It works," he whispered.
Then he chuckled, coughing a little. "It actually works."
From afar, Kiona screamed his name again, and the others were already running toward him.
But Kael, burnt, battered, and sparking, just sat there in the middle of the storm, laughing softly like a madman who had just glimpsed the answer to everything.
The storm soon passed, and the group brought him back to their little camp. His Draconic Regeneration was already doing wonders, as he was almost healed completely.
Nobody questioned him and instead let him have some peace to relax his mind. After all, they were sure that he had succeeded from his mad laugh, so they weren’t worried.
After some time, Kael raised his head and asked Rias, who was standing close to the trunk of the Great Storm Tree, "What do you think of it?"
"I expected it to be a seal, but no, it’s different. It’s not a seal," Rias spoke, caressing the jagged surface of the trunk. "Perhaps someone with the Authority of the Lightning Domain planted this tree, which gave it some divinity of their own."
Everything bad returned to normal, and if a mundane person were to visit the tree, they wouldn’t even realize the horrifying power and secrets it held.
"Yes, it could be the case," Kael muttered, remembering how Draven had thrown him here—and he also probably held Lightning Authority.
"Whatever it is, it’s certainly not dangerous for us anymore," Rias had a subtle smile playing on her lips as she said. "What you did was amazing."
Kael was taken aback for a moment, seeing that dazzling smile—which was enough to mesmerize any man. He wondered if she belonged to some bewitching authority...
Kiona didn’t seem to mind his reaction any longer, as she asked, "I have a clue, but can you please explain what you did there, Master?"
"It’s as you have guessed," Kael smiled at her. "The main tree works as the conductor, and the roots function as the converter. And it doesn’t need a connection from the main body to do it."
"Are you planning to use the wood from the tree to make houses?" Seth asked.
"Nope. We will just create lightning rods made of wood at the top of every house. It’ll absorb the lightning, transfer the energy to the ground, and make the houses safe."
It was a simple method that he had learned back on Earth about lightning rods. It worked in similar ways, but here the material was the special wood.
"Master, I’ve been wondering for a while, but why are you so fixated on making your nation here?" Kiona asked in confusion.
While she knew that the place was very suitable to build their nation, the Giant Storm Tree alone had caused them a lot of problems, so she didn’t understand why Kael wanted to settle here so adamantly.
"It’s because we are safe here, and we also don’t have many enemies we need to fight to make our base. The Giant Tree also provides us with a line of defense, good resources, and practically everything we need for our nation." Kael smiled and stood up. "But more than that, my guts tell me that this is the best location, and I’ll regret it if I move away."
And he had always trusted his gut... after making some confirmations, like he did this time with Alpha. After all, the tree might have intelligence and could be using mind hexes to affect their thoughts and judgment.
He didn’t have a good history with trees.
Kiona seemed to buy his explanation as she said, "My teacher once said that Dragons have very terrifying perception. Some high-level ones can even detect dangers if someone plots to harm them."
Kael raised an eyebrow but didn’t speak on the matter. Mostly because he was fighting back a yawn, so he asked, "Are you all fine with sleeping outside for today?"
"We have the habit," Seth spoke quietly, and the other two nodded.
Kael turned to ask Rias, but she just stepped back, vanishing from her spot and she left behind some words.
"I’ll come back in the morning."
’Her actions are auspicious,’ Kael muttered, as he dropped his back onto the ground. They had already cleared the area and also used soft grass to make a nice place for them to sit.
[Master, who would want to sleep outside when they can just teleport to a city and enjoy a nice, cozy room.]
’That’s true as well,’ Kael closed his eyes and said, "Good night, you all."
"Good night, Master..."
The night passed by quietly, as everyone gave their bodies and minds the much-needed rest. But as they had evolved bodies and also tempered minds, a single night was more than enough for them to recover from their exhausted state.
