Chapter 69: 69: First Step toward Control - Part 2

Silence followed that declaration and for a minute, Liam was afraid that he would be asked too many questions.

But instead of skiing questions, Lucas let out a short laugh.

"You? Studying magic? Now that’s something I never expected. Ah well, but I guess every Warden has this time in his life. Just don’t be too disappointed if you are not able to use magic."

Liam frowned before he answered.

"Don’t worry. I have no interest in magic. I just want more knowledge about it."

He lied as smoothly as he spoke but Lucas did not look convinced with his words. Still, the older decided to give Liam one last piece of advice.

"No, I did not think that. I was just worried about you. Especially since... That place isn’t exactly beginner-friendly. The scholars there are pretty uptight, and they don’t take kindly to outsiders. They believe that magic should be kept within certain circles."

Lucas warned.

Liam’s lips pressed into a thin line.

"I don’t care about their opinions. I just need the books. Besides, it’s not like they can say anything to me I have not heard before already."

Lucas sighed, now feeling sorry for Liam. He did not mean to bring up bad memories for the male.

"Suit yourself. The library’s on the west side of town, near the academic district. It’s easy to find, but getting inside might be another issue. They won’t let just anyone borrow books."

Liam crossed his arms.

"So, what do I need to do?"

Lucas smirked.

"That’s for you to figure out."

Liam narrowed his eyes, knowing Lucas wasn’t going to make this easy for him. But that was fine. He had faced worse obstacles. If gaining access to the library was the first challenge in his training, then so be it.

Taking a deep breath, he straightened his posture.

"I’ll manage."

Lucas chuckled.

"You’re in for an interesting experience, then. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you."

Despite the cautionary words, Liam felt something unfamiliar stir in his chest—determination.

He had spent too long relying on the system, too long running from his own limitations. But now, he had a goal. And he would do whatever it took to reach it.

With renewed purpose, Liam finished his shift and prepared himself for his next step.

Tomorrow, he would head to the Central Library for Magic. And no matter what it took, he would get the knowledge he needed.

But first...he needed to get a direction out of Lucas.

"Come on! Give me a direction to work at. Can you really not tell me where the library is?"

Liam asked once more and this time, Lucas let out a laugh.

"Hahaha, fuck! You are not easy to fool, are you kid? Most people would not have reasked me this question if I told them to figure it out themselves. But since you asked, I can give you an address for the library."

Lucas seemed to be just playing around but Liam did not feel as amused as Lucas looked and sounded at the moment.

The older noticed that Liam was not laughing at his words and he quickly calmed down with an almost guilty look on his face.

*Sigh*

"Fine, here. Take this card and head to the library. You don’t have to come to work tomorrow. It works out well since I also needed a day to get my affairs in order. You don’t have to feel bad about missing work for a day. I will even pay you for it."

Lucas assured Liam, making sure the younger did not feel guilty about missing work. But the joke was on him since Liam did not feel guilty about his day-off at all.

Not that he was going to say anything about it. Free money was free money, no matter where he got it from.

If Lucas was willing to pay him for missing a day of work, then Liam would be a fool to complain about it.

"Ah, before you head out there tomorrow, I feel like I should warn you about something. Don’t be overly curious and head into the forbidden section. I do want to see you making it to work the day after."

Somehow, Lucas’s words managed to make Liam nervous and he felt himself shiver at the tone of his voice.

His previous experiences had trained him not to ignore such feelings, so Liam vowed to be more careful when he visited the central library.

Next morning, Liam woke up early to do his morning routine before he sat down for breakfast. Since he did not have work, he did not have to worry about heading to work.

For the first time in a few days, Liam actually saw Asger and had time to talk to him.

The half-dragon barged into the dining room half an hour after Liam finished eating and the young-looking dragon did not even notice Liam sitting in front of him as he reached out to grab the toast.

About halfway through his breakfast, Asger finally decided to regain his consciousness and notice that he was not as alone as he thought.

"Y-You-! What are you doing back home? Should you not be at your work? Don’t tell me...you stayed back to keep an eye on me! I, Azgarethorax Malfiros, the Abyssal Wyrm of Eternal Desolation, will not forgive this humiliation-"

Liam felt a headache incoming. He also felt a need to justify his choices to the half-dragon.

"I did not get the day-off so that I could have fun. I took the day off because I need to visit the Magical Library for some business...I don’t like the look in your eyes. Asger, don’t speak. I am not going to take you with me."

Liam was firm in his decision and he made sure his words came across as clearly as he could make them.

So he did not know why and how he ended up walking toward the Central Magical Library with the half-dragon’s hand held in his own. He did not even want to do this in the first place.

Fuck! What possessed me to give in to Asger of all people? I don’t think I will ever recover from this.’
