Chapter 67: 67: I am being followed - Part 2

To Liam, magic felt like a familiar embrace, and it covered him fully. He relied on the system to help him out, and he quickly drove away.

But even as Liam drove away, he could feel his body becoming heavy. The strain of magic made him sluggish at times, but it had never felt this bad before.

Fuck! What is happening? Is it because I am not well right now? Is that why my body feels like it is about to break down? I—I need to stop—

[System warning: User’s body is no longer able to control his magic due to poor maintenance conditions. Forceful magic shutdown will commence.]

The system warned seconds before Liam felt the magic fade, and he came back into focus.

"What do you mean forceful shutdown? Why is this an option? And why now of all times... fuck, I don’t have time for this."

Liam complained as he turned his bike to enter the emptier parts of town. The roads there were narrower, and he had a better chance of losing the car following him.

But the car was the smaller concern for him. The bigger concern was his lack of magic at the current time.

Truthfully, Liam knew that this was a probability. He had more than enough memories in his mind that told him the importance of maintaining a healthy body and controlling his magic.

And yet, despite being well aware that this was something Liam needed to do, he had neglected this aspect of his training.

In simpler words—he knew how to use his magic in theory, but in practice, he was reliant on the system for the output of his magic.

It had not been a problem until now, but that was because Liam had been using his magic in moderation, making it possible for the system to control. But this time, the system had failed due to his bad condition.

"Fuck! This is something I will need to fix as soon as possible. I need to start with the basics once more... and maybe build up some stamina as well while I’m at it."

Liam was already winded, and all he had done until now was drive. He was afraid of what would happen once he decided to get down and face the group following him.

"System, is there anything I can do for now?"

Liam asked in a tired voice as he stopped his bike in an abandoned spot to catch his breath. Panic was beginning to color his vision white, and Liam needed a breather to calm down.

The car following him also stopped once it noticed that Liam had stopped, and some unknown masked people came out of it.

"What the... our target is this man? Man, what a letdown. I cannot feel anything special from him. Why did we have to spend our time chasing him down?"

One of the masked people spoke in an agitated and disappointed voice. Liam ignored the tone and tried to find some clues to figure out who these people were.

"Stop talking and get to work. We need to bring this man back and start the inauguration ceremony. Our time of glory is approaching fast. Our god has begun to show signs of awakening, and we need all the sacrifices we can get."

The second man spoke with confidence as he stepped forward toward Liam.

Liam had no idea what these people were talking about, but he knew that it could not be anything good, and that made him panic even more.

"Hello! System! A little help here—"

Liam asked seconds before his body moved on its own, and he dodged the attack. His attacker looked happy to see that Liam had dodged, and he even let out a joyous laugh.

"Oh! So you do have some fight left in you? That’s good! I was afraid that you were going to make this too dull for me. Now, show me what you’ve got."

The man yelled before he attacked once more. But unlike before, his attacks were much more focused now, and they also had magic boosting them.

Liam was no expert at using magic, but he could sense his attacker using magic, and that gave him an idea.

In his memories, he had seen himself use his own magic to disrupt others’ magic and block others from being able to use magic. It was a delicate process that required fine control, but Liam felt like he had no choice.

"System, guide me."

Liam whispered before he waited for the next strike to come. He allowed it to hit his arm before he wrapped his arms around the wrist heading for him, and he closed his hand around that wrist.

"Caught you."

Liam whispered through clenched teeth as his arm throbbed with pain.

"H-Hey, what are you... let go of me right now."

The attacker spoke, finally noticing what Liam was trying to do. But before either could do anything else, Liam felt his magic getting disturbed. He tried to stop himself in time, but Liam was unable to stop the small explosion.

Liam’s magic control was not good, and as a result, he was not able to stop himself from interfering with his opponent in time.

"O-Oi! Let go of me now."

His opponent yelled with fear in his eyes, but it was too late. Before anyone could blink, the man exploded into a shower of blood and bones, making both Liam and his partner look stunned.

"W-What happened? What did you do, you monster? How dare you—"

The partner asked in a shocked voice, but no one was more shocked than Liam at what happened.

The system came to Liam’s rescue quickly, and Liam felt a sense of calm wash over him. Objectively, he knew what he needed to feel about the situation, but that filter made sure Liam would not feel anything.
