Chapter 64: 64: Would you like to join a Cult? - Part 2
Liam had gotten rid of the card, but it did not seem as if the card was ready to be gotten rid of just yet.
He pulled his hand back, and his stomach dropped when he saw the same black card sitting in his purse, the golden symbols glinting under the dim light.
"What the—? I threw this away!"
Liam looked around, half-expecting the teenager to jump out from a corner and laugh at him, but the shop was empty. Frowning, he marched over to the trash can to check. Sure enough, the card wasn’t there.
"This is ridiculous. Stay there this time"
He muttered, heading to the dumpster outside. He tossed the card into the bin with a little more force than necessary, watching as it disappeared among the other trash.
Feeling slightly more at ease, Liam locked up the shop and hopped onto his bike to head home.
The next morning, Liam was already in a bad mood. His body still ached, and the system had decided to force another "training session" in his dreams, leaving him feeling more exhausted than rested.
Dragging himself to the kitchen, Liam made a quick breakfast before grabbing his purse to leave for work. He was halfway out the door when he paused, a sinking feeling creeping into his chest.
"No, it can’t be..."
He whispered to himself, shaking his head.
He slowly opened his purse, and there it was. The black card.
Liam stared at it, his heart pounding. He didn’t understand what was happening. He’d thrown the card away—twice! Yet, here it was, as if it had never left his possession.
"Alright, this is officially creepy."
Grabbing the card, he stormed back into the house and tossed it onto the counter. He didn’t care how strange it was—he wasn’t taking it to work with him. He didn’t need the added stress.
But as he stepped out of the house and locked the door behind him, a thought lingered in the back of his mind.
What if there’s more to this card than meets the eye?
He shook his head, trying to push the thought away.
"Nope. Not my problem. Not dealing with this today."
Liam was finishing up his quick breakfast, still trying to shake off the unsettling feeling from the strange black card.
The house was quiet until the sound of footsteps broke the silence. Liam looked up to see Asger entering the room, a rare sight this early in the morning.
For once, the half-dragon was awake at a reasonable hour. He rubbed his eyes lazily, his usual bored expression plastered across his face. His golden eyes scanned the room, disinterested, before he mumbled.
"Morning."
"Morning."
Liam replied, slightly taken aback by the sight of Asger being up so early.
Without waiting for an invitation, Asger shuffled over to the breakfast table and plopped into a chair. He leaned over the food Liam had prepared, sniffing it with an exaggerated motion.
"Not bad-"
Asger commented, his voice neutral as he reached for a piece of toast. But then he froze mid-reach, his nostrils flaring. His golden eyes narrowed, and his head turned sharply to look at Liam.
"What is it?"
Liam asked, confused by Asger’s sudden change in demeanor.
Asger didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stood up, his movements tense. He walked toward Liam and grabbed his wrist, holding it up to his face. His nose wrinkled in displeasure, and his grip tightened slightly.
"You reek."
Asger said flatly, his voice laced with irritation.
"Excuse me?"
Liam blinked, baffled. He had just taken a shower so he did not understand what Asger was saying.
"You have a weird magical smell on you. It’s strong, and it’s annoying me. What did you get into this time?"
Asger elaborated, waving his free hand as if to fan the air around Liam.
Liam frowned, pulling his hand back.
"Magical smell? I don’t even know what that means. I haven’t done anything except work and try to get some sleep—which, by the way, I failed at."
Asger crossed his arms, his gaze scrutinizing.
"No, this isn’t normal. It’s...something different. Something off. You didn’t pick this up from work or the usual stuff. Where were you yesterday? Did you touch anything weird?"
At that, Liam’s mind immediately went to the black card. With a reluctant sigh, he reached into his purse, hesitating briefly before pulling it out.
"This, maybe?"
Liam held up the card.
The reaction was immediate. Asger recoiled as if Liam had shoved a pile of garbage in his face. His golden eyes widened, and his usually calm demeanor shattered.
"Get that thing away from me! What is wrong with you? Why do you have something like that?"
Asger hissed, taking several steps back.
Liam raised an eyebrow.
"It’s just a card. A weird kid gave it to me yesterday. He wanted me to join some cult or something, but I told him no. I even tried throwing it away—twice—but it keeps showing up in my purse. I was going to ignore it."
"Just a card? Oi human, are you dumb? That thing isn’t just anything. It’s dangerous. You shouldn’t have even touched it!"
Asger growled, his voice low and tense.
Now thoroughly concerned, Liam glanced down at the card in his hand. It didn’t look dangerous—just a black card with golden symbols etched onto it. But the way Asger was reacting made his skin crawl.
"What’s so dangerous about it?"
Liam asked cautiously.
Asger shook his head, running a hand through his silver hair in frustration.
"I don’t know exactly, but I can feel it. That card reeks of old magic, dark magic. And whoever gave it to you isn’t someone you should be dealing with. Burn it away. Or better yet, give it here and I will do it for you. I will also curse the one who gave this to you so that-"
Asger was getting more and more violent with the way he was speaking and Liam felt like it was a good idea to stop the half-dragon now.
