Chapter 62: 62: Show the way - Part 2

By the time closing hour rolled around, Liam was exhausted—both physically and mentally. He locked up the shop, waved goodbye to Lucas, and headed toward his bike.

The cool evening air brushed against his skin, offering a small reprieve from the heat that had built up over the day. All Liam could think about was getting home, collapsing onto his bed, and maybe indulging in some comfort food.

But just as he reached his bike, a voice called out behind him.

"Excuse me!"

Liam turned to see a teenager, maybe fifteen or sixteen years old, jogging toward him. The boy was dressed in a hoodie and jeans, his dark hair slightly disheveled.

"Uh, yeah? Can I help you?"

Liam asked, already feeling a flicker of unease.

The teenager didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he pulled something out of his pocket—a shard of glass about the size of his palm. It glinted faintly in the dim light, and Liam realized it wasn’t ordinary glass. Magical runes shimmered across its surface, forming a faint map.

"Do you know where this points?"

The boy asked, holding up the shard. His tone was casual, but his eyes were sharp, studying Liam intently.

Liam blinked, leaning in slightly to get a better look. The map etched onto the glass was unmistakable—it pointed directly to the antique shop where he worked.

"Uh, yeah, it’s pointing to the shop right there."

Liam said, gesturing behind him.

The teenager’s eyes flicked toward the shop, his expression unreadable.

"This shop?"

"Yep. Old antiques, curios, and a bunch of random junk. Nothing too exciting."

Liam said with a shrug. He couldn’t help but feel a pang of suspicion. Who was this kid, and why did he have a magical map pointing to the shop?

The boy nodded slowly, his gaze lingering on the shop for a moment before he turned back to Liam.

"Thanks. Sorry to bother you."

"No problem."

Liam replied, already turning back to his bike. He didn’t have the energy to deal with whatever strange experiment or treasure hunt this kid was on. Probably some kind of social media challenge or school project, he reasoned.

But as Liam mounted his bike and pedaled away, he couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. He glanced over his shoulder and saw the teenager still standing there, his eyes following Liam’s every move.

The boy’s expression had changed—no longer casual or curious, but sharp and calculating. He wasn’t looking at the shop anymore; he was watching Liam.

Liam’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly turned his head back, forcing himself to focus on the road. He told himself it was nothing, just paranoia brought on by guilt and exhaustion.

But deep down, he couldn’t ignore the nagging feeling that this encounter was far from innocent.

Liam finally reached home, and the exhaustion in his body made every step feel like an impossible task. The pain in his back had become almost unbearable, but he still managed to drag himself inside.

Asger was already lounging on the couch, his dragon-like tail flicking lazily behind him.

Liam plopped down on the couch next to Asger with a groan.

"I’m so done today."

He muttered, rubbing his temples.

Asger, ever the demanding half-dragon, perked up at the sight of Liam.

"Oi, human. I’m hungry. What’s for dinner? You seem too tired for me to such off your magic, so I will make do with human food for today."

Liam’s eyes narrowed.

"You know, some of us don’t have the luxury of just demanding food whenever we feel like it," he grumbled, but his body betrayed him. The thought of cooking anything seemed like the last thing he could handle.

After a moment of internal debate, he sighed and pulled out his phone.

"Fine. I’ll just order takeout. It’s easier than cooking when my body feels like it’s been run over by a herd of bulls."

Asger didn’t need to be asked twice. He practically jumped up, his tail swishing in excitement.

"Order something good! I’m not in the mood for anything too bland."

Liam rolled his eyes but didn’t bother arguing.

He placed an order for some greasy comfort food, hoping it would help him get some much-needed energy. He lay back against the couch, feeling the weight of his exhaustion press him deeper into the cushions.

It wasn’t long before the food arrived, and Liam barely managed to drag himself out of his stupor to retrieve the bags.

Asger wasted no time in grabbing the largest portion of fries and a burger, devouring it almost in one gulp.

Liam could barely summon the energy to eat himself, his body just wanting to sleep. He quickly ate what he could, though, knowing he needed to fuel himself if he was going to make it through the next day.

Eventually, with the meal finished, Liam collapsed into his bed, his body longing for the comfort of sleep.

This is the one good thing left today. A decent meal and sleep.

But little did he know, the system had other plans.

As Liam drifted off, his body finally relaxing and his mind slipping into the peaceful haze of sleep, the system decided that this was the perfect opportunity to start its latest "training."

[Training Mode: Memory Enhancement Initiated. User will be prompted to recall specific memories and experiences for improvement in mental processing. Progress will be measured and adjusted accordingly.]

Liam’s eyes shot open as his mind suddenly jolted awake. He groaned, feeling more tired than before. The system’s annoying voice echoed in his head.

"What the hell?! I was sleeping! You could’ve picked any other time to do this!"

Liam shouted inwardly, clenching his fists in frustration.

But the system, as always, didn’t seem to care about his complaints.

The frustration only built as the memories flooded his mind—random and disjointed recollections of his past, some he had tried to forget, others that had never been fully processed.

The worst part? He had no control over it. The system was poking at his brain, forcing him to experience them over and over again until they were clearer.

Each memory felt like a punch to the gut, like a scene in his life playing out in vivid, painful detail, and he could do nothing to stop it. There was no escape from the system’s relentless training.

He slammed his eyes shut, biting down on his lip to keep from yelling. His body felt heavier, weighed down by the mental strain that had somehow transferred into physical exhaustion.

Liam cursed under his breath.

This is not how I wanted to spend my night. Why can’t you just leave me alone, system?

But there was no answer, of course. There never was.

He lay there for what felt like hours, unable to rest properly, as the system pushed him further and further into recalling fragments of memories and experiences.

Every time he thought he was going to drift back to sleep, another memory would flood his mind, and the cycle would start again.

[Training Mode complete. User has successfully recalled memory of past events, integrating information more efficiently. Further progress in user’s memory training will continue over the next cycle of sleep.]

By the time the system finally relented and allowed him to sleep again, he was more exhausted than when he first went to bed. He could barely keep his eyes open.

Despite how drained he felt, there was a grim resignation settling in.

I guess tomorrow is going to be just as bad, if not worse.

Liam closed his eyes, but the weight of the day, the memories, and the system’s interference hung over him like an oppressive fog. He had a feeling he wouldn’t be getting any rest tomorrow, either.
