Chapter 61: 61: Show the way - Part 1

"I don’t want to go to work. My body hurts. Who knew using magic could be this taxing?"

Liam complained as he tried to get out of bed, but his legs and back collapsed. His muscles were tense, and taking every step hurt.

But his body’s needs could not be avoided, and Liam forced himself to head to the toilet and do his business.

Warm water helped relax Liam’s muscles, but he still did not feel like he was in a condition to head to work. However, taking a day off was not an option, so he quickly headed down to eat breakfast.

As soon as Liam reached the kitchen, he had another revelation.

"Oh yeah! I will have to cook my own food for the next few days. Sigh I will miss Elder Erin and his cooking. It saved me so much time during the morning rush."

Liam quickly got to work and cooked a simple meal for himself and Asger.

The reason he had to do this, and the reason Elder Erin was not in his house, had to do with the collapsed temple.

No one knew how it collapsed, but it had caused panic in the magic society. As a result, Elder Erin, along with other high-class magicians, was called back to discuss what happened and what to do now.

The main problem was not that the temple had collapsed, but the fact that the holy relic was missing.

Liam, who had the holy relic in his inventory, wanted to chuck the relic somewhere and be free of the responsibility of carrying it around. But he had a feeling that it would be a bad idea.

It was highly sought after, and the chances of it being discovered and traced back to him were high if he took it out of his inventory. So it was better for him not to take it out and keep it hidden.

Liam finally finished making breakfast, plated his food, and then ran out of his house.

He was sure he broke all speed laws and ran all red lights, but it was something he would deal with later. For now, he had work to get to.

With his back killing him, Liam made his way to the almost-empty shop and sighed in relief. He had made it in time.

"Liam, you came? That’s good. I have even better news for you. Aria will not be here for the next few days because of... stuff that happened. Do you know about the Temple of Lunaris? Well, it collapsed, so a lot of people were called back to discuss it. Anyway, it has nothing to do with us."

Lucas told Liam, and hearing someone else talk about it made Liam feel a little guilty and curious to know more.

"Really? The temple collapsed? What are the authorities going to do about it? Have they found out who was behind this?"

Liam asked in a tense voice. He was sweating bullets as he tried to keep himself in check. He did not want to show how nervous he was when he asked this question.

Thankfully, it did not seem as if the elder noticed.

"Tsk, not yet. The authorities are looking into it, but apparently, they have not found the culprit yet. But when they do, that person will be in big trouble... why do you look so pale? Are you tired? Your back is hunched as well. Did something happen?"

The older male asked in a worried voice, but even his concern felt like Liam was being mocked.

’I can never allow anyone to find out that the culprit behind the temple collapse was me. I don’t think I would be able to live a carefree life if people knew about it.’

Liam sighed as he corrected his posture. But it did not help with the back pain.

The more he tried to act tough, the more Lucas looked worried about him. There was no getting around it.

Liam plastered on a faint smile and waved Lucas off. "I’m fine, really. Just a little sore from yesterday. I think I might’ve slept wrong, too."

Lucas didn’t look convinced, especially when Liam’s back gave out mid-sentence, forcing him to grab the edge of the counter for support. His knees buckled slightly, and a grimace twisted his face.

"Yeah, you’re totally fine. You look like an old man trying to pretend he’s still young. Seriously, Liam, if you don’t rest, you’re going to keel over one of these days."

Lucas said, crossing his arms and narrowing his eyes.

"I’ll rest when I get home. Besides, there’s not much traffic today. I’ll manage"

Liam reassured him, forcing himself upright despite the throbbing pain that pulsed down his spine.

Lucas sighed but didn’t press further, shaking his head as he walked away.

"Just don’t overdo it, alright? And if you need to leave early, let me know. I can cover for you."

Liam muttered his thanks, though he doubted Lucas’s offer would hold up if a sudden rush of customers came in. Not that it seemed likely today—business was slow.

The day dragged on, the clock ticking lazily as if mocking Liam’s pain. Customers trickled in, but none stayed long or bought much. Most of Liam’s time was spent tidying shelves and wiping down counters, his aching body protesting every movement.

But it wasn’t the slow pace of the day that weighed on him—it was the constant murmur of conversations he overheard from customers about the collapsed temple.

"Did you hear about the Temple of Lunaris? It’s been there for centuries!"

"They say it just crumbled out of nowhere. No warning, nothing."

"Some people think it was sabotage. Maybe those terrorists are back? You know, the ones who caused all that trouble a while back?"

Each snippet of gossip felt like a dagger to Liam’s gut, the guilt twisting and gnawing at him. He hadn’t meant to collapse the temple, but it didn’t change the fact that he had. And now, the entire magical community was in an uproar.
