Chapter 60: 60: The aftermath - Part 2
The ice cream shop was tucked into a quiet street, its pastel-painted walls and warm lights a stark contrast to the earlier chaos. Once inside, the group settled into a corner booth, and the mood shifted almost instantly.
Aria and Asger, who had joined them along the way, acted like children in a candy store. Aria clapped her hands excitedly as she read the menu, her eyes sparkling with delight.
"Asger, look! They have dragonfruit flavor!"
Aria exclaimed, nudging the half-dragon, who looked equally thrilled.
"Finally, something worthy of my taste!"
Asger declared, puffing out his chest as he ordered an extravagant sundae that towered like a mountain.
Bianca, ever the responsible one, tried to rein them in but ended up indulging herself as well, ordering a colorful array of desserts. But she was a kid as well, and she fell to the temptation of ice-cream as well.
"Don’t start without me. I want to choose my own flavor as well.
The shop’s staff looked both amused and overwhelmed as they scrambled to prepare the group’s order.
Mostly because they had a kid, an almost adult and an actual adult acting like kids and jumping around.
Liam, however, couldn’t relax. Partially because he felt like a parent with three hyper-active kids and the other part because of Victor.
He kept one eye on Victor, who sat calmly across from him, sipping a cup of coffee. The older man seemed unfazed by the childish antics around him, but his piercing gaze occasionally flicked toward Liam, as if assessing him.
Once the food and ice cream were served, the table erupted in cheerful chatter. Even Liam found himself momentarily distracted by the lighthearted atmosphere, though he remained wary of Victor’s subtle glances.
It was after the plates had been cleared and the group was basking in a post-meal haze that Victor finally spoke, his voice cutting through the laughter like a blade.
"Liam, have you ever thought about joining a guild?"
He began, leaning forward slightly.
The question made Liam’s heart skip a beat. He knew this wasn’t a casual inquiry. Victor’s tone was too calculated, too precise.
"I’m not sure what you mean. I don’t think I’m cut out for guild work. That is why I decided not to call you after your last offer."
Liam replied cautiously, forcing a neutral expression onto his face.
Victor’s lips curled into a knowing smile, one that sent chills down Liam’s spine.
"Don’t sell yourself short. Someone with your... talents could benefit greatly from a guild. Especially one that knows how to keep secrets"
Victor said smoothly.
Liam felt his chest tighten. There it was—confirmation that Victor suspected something about him. Or worse, knew. But Liam wasn’t about to let anything slip.
"I don’t have any talents worth mentioning. I’m just an average guy trying to get by."
Liam said with a forced chuckle, trying to downplay the situation.
Victor’s eyes gleamed with amusement, as if he could see right through Liam’s facade. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek black card, sliding it across the table toward Liam.
"Well, if you ever change your mind, you know where to find me. Consider this an open invitation. And if you ever find yourself in need of... assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out"
Victor said, his tone almost teasing.
Liam hesitated before picking up the card, his fingers brushing against the embossed text. It bore Victor’s name and a contact number, as well as an elegant emblem that Liam didn’t recognize but felt had significance.
"Thanks."
Liam said, slipping the card into his pocket with a nonchalant air. But in his mind, he vowed never to use it.
Victor’s smile widened as if he knew exactly what Liam was thinking. "I look forward to the day you decide to call," he said, his tone dripping with confidence.
The rest of the evening passed in relative peace, though Liam couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. Even as they left the shop and said their goodbyes to Victor, Liam felt the older man’s gaze lingering on him.
Back in his room, Liam finally allowed himself to relax, collapsing onto the bed with a groan. The events of the day played in his mind like a whirlwind, from the near-disaster at the temple to Victor’s unsettling offer.

The system’s voice chimed in, validating Liam’s suspicions.
"Yeah, I figured that out already," Liam muttered, staring at the black card he’d pulled from his pocket.
He turned it over in his hand, the embossed emblem catching the light. Despite his vow not to call, he couldn’t deny the nagging thought at the back of his mind: what if he really needed help someday?
Shaking his head, Liam stuffed the card into a drawer and slammed it shut.
"No way," he said firmly. "I’m not getting involved with him."
But as he lay there in the dark, he couldn’t help but feel that his path and Victor’s were far from finished crossing.

Meanwhile, in another place, people clad in white gathered around a small altar and they prayed to their god.
Chanting filled the chamber as thousands of people spoke at the same time and offered their magic. But it did not feel enough.
"O Divine One. Please show us the way. Guide us and tell us what we should do to bring your glory back into this world?"
The man praying to the altar asked, but he did not get an immediate answer. He was about to give up when he saw moonlight shining at the glass he had laid down on the table.
At first, there seemed to be nothing special about that glass. But within seconds, the light began to form patterns and almost formed a complete map, telling these people where they needed to go.
"A-Ah, divine one. So this is your will? We shall carry it out. Please, guide us and show us the way. We promise to carry out whatever you want us to do."
