Chapter 57: 57: Destructive Powers - Part 1

The rubble around Liam shifted precariously as he tried to descend the pile. He had to adjust his weight carefully to avoid falling face-first into the debris.

Several times, he felt himself lose balance, but every time he was on the verge of falling, an invisible force seemed to tug him upright, keeping him on his feet.

Liam glanced at the smiling man in front of him, seeking an explanation, but Victor seemed content to let him puzzle it out on his own.

The silence between them grew heavier, and Liam felt compelled to break it before the tension became unbearable.

"Excuse me, but I don’t think you explained what you’re doing here. Are you the only one doing rescue work?"

Liam’s voice carried a note of suspicion as he finally reached stable ground. He let out a relieved sigh but tensed up almost immediately when he noticed the curious and somewhat dark expression on Victor’s face.

[User is being probed with a search skill. Warning: User will not be able to block the full effect of the spell. Would the user still like to partially block the skill?]

The system’s warning came a moment later, and Liam hurriedly shouted "YES" in his mind.

He exhaled in relief as he felt the magic glance over him without delving too deeply. For now, he was safe.

But it raised an unsettling question—who was this man, and how had he managed to bypass Liam’s defenses so easily? Even in his weakened state, Liam still retained enough magic to protect himself, yet Victor had slipped through like it was nothing.

Victor’s eyes narrowed as he continued his probing attempts, clearly trying to unravel Liam’s secrets. Liam, however, held firm, despite the internal strain it caused. His face betrayed nothing of the struggle, a small victory that gave him some confidence.

Finally, Victor stopped, and Liam felt the tension ease slightly. He was about to relax when—

[Warning. User is advised to dodge—hssiss]

The system’s voice cut off into static as a hand clamped over Liam’s face. He froze, staring into a pair of dark eyes framed by long strands of disheveled hair.

"Now this is interesting. Do you mind if I take a closer look at your mind? I have a feeling I’d find something fascinating."

Victor’s voice was calm yet laced with unsettling amusement, sending a wave of dread through Liam. He tried to pull back, but Victor’s grip was unyielding, no matter how much force Liam exerted.

He wanted to use magic, but an overwhelming sense of exhaustion and draining power rendered him helpless.

"Be a good boy and let me look—"

"Oi, human! Did you find anything? Speak up before I burn this place to ashes!"

Asger’s loud, commanding voice cut through the tension like a knife. The grip on Liam’s face slackened just enough for him to twist free. Without thinking, Liam lunged forward and bit Victor’s hand, hard enough to draw blood.

Even Liam didn’t fully understand why biting was his first instinct, but it worked. He managed to pull away just as Asger climbed over the rubble, his sharp eyes locking onto Liam.

"Human, you found Liam..."

Asger’s voice trailed off as his gaze shifted from Liam’s reddened face to Victor, who was now cradling his bleeding hand in disbelief.

"Hey, did we find Liam? Victor, did you—Asger, maybe we should head back and leave these two alone. I feel like we’re interrupting something we shouldn’t be."

Bianca appeared moments later, her tone light but her words laced with misunderstanding. She placed a hand on Asger’s shoulder, as though trying to guide him away.

But Asger wasn’t budging. His sharp, dragon-like eyes flickered with growing anger as he assessed the situation.

Tension crackled in the air between them. Bianca opened her mouth to suggest a plan, but before she could, Asger snarled and lunged at Victor, his claws extending mid-strike.

The clash between Asger and Victor was deafening.

Every strike, every blow sent tremors through the ground, rattling the remnants of the already fragile temple. Asger’s claws slashed through the air with a feral precision, while Victor countered with an almost unnerving calm, using his magic to deflect and retaliate.

Sparks of energy crackled and burst around them, illuminating the ruins in a sinister glow.

Liam winced as the sheer force of their battle sent a shockwave through the area, toppling smaller pieces of rubble. His system chimed in, its robotic voice carrying a note of urgency.

[Warning: The fight is attracting external attention. Probability of others arriving: 83%. Suggested course of action: De-escalate the conflict.]

Liam’s heart sank. The system was never wrong, and judging by the growing intensity of the fight, it wouldn’t be long before their location was swarmed with curious onlookers or, worse, those who meant harm.

He turned to Bianca, who stood frozen, her eyes darting between the two combatants. The color had drained from her face, and her hands were trembling slightly.

"Bianca, we need to do something!"

Liam shouted over the cacophony of the fight.

Bianca snapped her head toward him, her pale expression quickly twisting into disbelief. Her look was almost comical, as if she couldn’t believe Liam was serious.

"You’re joking, right? You think we can stop them? Look at them! They’re tearing each other apart! Do you know what would happen if I tried to step in? I’d get flattened!"

"I’m not joking. I have a feeling this is going to get worse if we don’t step in now. We need to stop them before they go all out."

Liam said firmly, his voice cutting through her panic.

Bianca opened her mouth to argue, but another deafening crash made her flinch. Victor had just narrowly dodged a strike from Asger, the half-dragon’s claws gouging deep trenches into the stone floor.

The air itself seemed to ripple with the force of their blows, and the energy radiating from them was growing increasingly unstable.

Liam’s heart was beating strongly. He had every reason not to get involved in this clash, and yet, he could not stop himself from speaking. It felt as if he was being influenced by his past-life’s memory.
