Chapter 56: 56: Trap Lineup- Part 3
"Hey, we are not here for that. We need to find Liam first and then think about everything else."
Asger growled lowly, clearly reluctant to leave without a fight, but Bianca placed a calming hand on his arm.
"We’ll have to trust him on this."
Victor raised his staff, the air around him crackling with energy as he began casting. Complex runes formed in the air, spinning rapidly as he channeled his immense magical reserves into a single, overwhelming spell.
______
Meanwhile, deep inside the temple, Liam stood frozen as his system blared a warning.
[Warning: Large-scale magic detected. User can opt for immunity to the teleportation spell. Choose: Yes/No.]
Liam’s brow furrowed as he read the system notification. His gut twisted in apprehension.
"A teleportation spell? Large-scale magic? What the hell is happening out there?"
He quickly weighed his options. Teleportation sounded like a safer choice, but Liam had no idea where he would end up.
If he left this area, he risked exposing himself to the people who had brought him here—and he wasn’t ready to face them again just yet.
"No. "I’m staying put. I’ll take my chances here. With my luck, who knows where I will end up at."
He muttered.
He selected No on the system interface, and instantly another notification appeared.
[Decision registered. Preparing defensive measures. Recommend deploying a high-level barrier to absorb incoming impact.]
Liam cursed under his breath.
"Guess I don’t have much of a choice."
He extended his hands, summoning all the magical energy he could muster. A shimmering dome of light began to form around him, growing stronger with every second.
The ground beneath him trembled violently, and a deafening roar echoed through the temple as the explosion erupted.
The shockwave tore through the structure like a hurricane, reducing ancient walls and pillars to rubble in seconds.
Liam braced himself, gritting his teeth as the force of the blast slammed into his barrier.
"Hold...just a little longer!"
He shouted, sweat dripping down his forehead as he poured every ounce of his energy into maintaining the shield.
Finally, the shockwave subsided, leaving behind an eerie silence. Liam’s barrier flickered and then dissipated, leaving him panting and drained but otherwise unharmed.
He glanced around and realized he was lucky to be in a section of the temple that had miraculously avoided complete destruction. Most of the debris had fallen away from him, and there were no signs of other people in this part of the structure.
"Well...guess I survived that."
He muttered, leaning against a cracked wall to catch his breath.
Liam emerged cautiously from the wreckage, scanning his surroundings.
The area was eerily quiet, with no signs of life. The temple’s destruction had left behind a massive crater, and the once-grand structure was now nothing more than rubble.
"Looks like everyone’s gone. Good. That means no witnesses."
Liam muttered, brushing dust off his clothes.
The system chimed in again.
[Status: User has successfully survived the explosion. Magical energy levels stabilizing. Suggest proceeding with caution.]
Liam sighed.
"Thanks for the advice. Like I wasn’t already doing that."
He began picking his way through the debris, trying to find a way out of the ruins. His mind raced with questions. Who had used such powerful magic? Was it connected to the group that had brought him here?
And most importantly—how was he going to get out of this mess without being noticed?
Liam leaned against a fractured pillar, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. His body felt like lead, and every attempt to use magic only resulted in a weak flicker before fizzling out entirely.
The system chimed softly in his mind, its tone urgent but calm.
[Warning: Prolonged exposure to magical residuals has weakened your physical and magical capabilities. User is advised to retreat to safety immediately to avoid detection or further harm.]
"Easy for you to say. I can’t even move properly."
Liam muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.
The weight of his exhaustion settled over him like a suffocating blanket, and for a brief moment, Liam considered simply giving up and collapsing where he stood.
The temple was quiet now, eerily so, but he knew it wouldn’t last. Someone would come to investigate the aftermath of the chaos.
Gritting his teeth, Liam forced himself to take a shaky step forward. His vision blurred slightly, and the sharp pain in his side reminded him that he wasn’t just tired—he was injured too.
He tried once more to summon a basic barrier spell to shield himself, but the strain was too much. His knees buckled, and he barely managed to catch himself before hitting the ground.
As he crouched there, trying to will his body to cooperate, he heard footsteps echoing through the ruined chamber.
Panic surged through him, and with trembling hands, he prepared to channel the last remnants of his magic. It wasn’t much, but it might be enough for a single strike if he had to defend himself.
The footsteps grew closer, accompanied by a faint, familiar hum of powerful magic. Liam’s heart raced.
Whoever was approaching wasn’t just some random scavenger—they were strong, and he was in no condition to fight them.
The shadow of the figure loomed over him, and Liam’s pulse quickened as he prepared to unleash his spell. But before he could act, the tension was broken by a cheerful, almost teasing voice.
"Well, well, if it isn’t the young man from the old man’s shop. Fancy seeing you here. Or should I say, you’ve got a real knack for getting yourself into trouble, huh?"
Liam froze, his magic faltering as he processed the familiar voice. Slowly, he lifted his gaze, and sure enough, standing before him with his usual carefree demeanor was Victor.
"You... You’re that guy from the shop"
Liam’s voice cracked as recognition dawned on him.
Victor grinned, leaning casually on his staff.
"That’s me. Small world, isn’t it? Though I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting to run into you in the middle of a collapsing temple."
The tension in the air eased slightly as Liam lowered his trembling hands. Victor’s relaxed attitude and easy smile were disarming, even in the midst of the chaos.
"What are you doing here?"
Liam asked, his voice hoarse.
Victor shrugged.
"Oh, you know, just taking a stroll, knocking out some goons, and maybe rescuing someone who’s been making waves. Speaking of which, care to explain how you ended up in this mess?"
Liam couldn’t help but let out a weak laugh, the absurdity of the situation finally catching up to him.
"It’s... a long story."
Victor chuckled, extending a hand to help Liam up.
"Don’t worry. We’ve got time. Let’s get you out of here first."
For the first time in what felt like hours, Liam allowed himself to relax, the weight of his fear lifting slightly in Victor’s presence.
