Chapter 55: 55: Trap Lineup- Part 2
The sudden deluge extinguished the remaining flames on the orc, but it also served another purpose. The floor was now slick with water, making it difficult for the orc to maintain its footing.
As it charged toward Liam, it slipped, crashing to the ground with a thunderous impact.
"Okay, that’s progress."
Liam muttered, already moving toward the next plate. This one was marked with an earth symbol. When he activated it, large stone pillars erupted from the ground, forming a barrier between him and the orc.
The creature roared in frustration, smashing its club against the pillars in an attempt to break through. The sound echoed through the chamber, but the barriers held firm—for now.
Liam’s mind raced. He needed a way to finish this. The orc was still too strong, and he couldn’t keep running forever. His eyes landed on the final pressure plate, marked with an air symbol.
"That has to do something."
He muttered, dashing toward it.
As soon as he stepped on the plate, a powerful gust of wind surged through the room. The force was enough to knock Liam off his feet, but it also had a more dramatic effect on the orc.
The wind lifted the creature off the ground, sending it crashing into the sharp edges of the stone pillars.
The orc let out one final, guttural roar before it fell to the ground, motionless. Liam lay on the floor, gasping for breath, his body trembling from the exertion.
[Threat neutralized. User has successfully overcome the trap.]
The system’s calm notification felt almost mocking after the ordeal he’d just endured.
"Yeah, sure, let’s call it a success."
Liam muttered, pulling himself to his feet. His entire body ached, but at least he was alive.
He glanced at the orc’s lifeless body, a pang of guilt hitting him.
Despite the creature’s mindless aggression, it was still alive—once. But he didn’t have the luxury to dwell on morality. He needed to secure the sacred relic and get out of here before another trap activated.
Liam approached the relic cautiously, his steps measured and deliberate.
The pedestal it rested on was intricately carved, glowing faintly with magical energy. He could feel the relic’s power emanating from it, a pulsing warmth that made his skin tingle.
"Okay, just grab it and go,"
He told himself.
He reached out, his fingers brushing against the relic’s surface. It was cold to the touch, despite the warmth it radiated, and it seemed to hum softly as he lifted it from the pedestal.
[Warning: Removing the relic has activated the final trap. User must evacuate immediately.]
"Of course it has."
Liam muttered, already running toward the exit. The room began to shake violently, chunks of the ceiling falling as the ancient temple started to collapse.
Behind him, he heard the sound of mechanisms grinding to life—more traps activating. He didn’t look back to see what they were. He didn’t need to know.
The only thing that mattered was getting out alive.
As he sprinted through the crumbling temple, Liam could hear the system’s voice in his mind, providing updates on the structural integrity of the building.
[Collapse in progress. Estimated time until complete structural failure: 2 minutes and 30 seconds.]
"Great! Just great!"
Liam yelled, pushing his body to its limits.
He could see the entrance now, a faint light at the end of the dark corridor. Summoning every ounce of strength he had left, he sprinted toward it, diving through just as the temple behind him caved in completely.
Liam landed hard on the ground outside, coughing as he inhaled the fresh air. The temple was gone, buried under a mountain of rubble.
But in his hand, he still held the sacred relic.
"Well, time to make my escape. That was a lot more dramatic than I expected."
He said between gasps for air.
He didn’t have time to rest, though. He knew the relic’s power would draw attention, and he couldn’t afford to stay in one place for too long.
As he stood, brushing the dust off his clothes, he resolved to figure out what to do with the relic—and fast.
______
Beep
The loud noise alerted everyone that there was an emergency, and panic surged through the hotel.
Normal people who were intoxicated panicked and tried to get out of the building.
But the ones who were the most worried were the magicians, who had to ensure the building remained intact and did not collapse.
For the first time in history, a temple’s emergency signal had sounded like this, and there could only be a few reasons behind it.
Everyone found the situation dumbfounding, but there was a group that found the beeping particularly annoying.
"Ugh, what is this noise, and why is it so loud? I can’t concentrate if it keeps blaring in my ears. Someone, make it stop."
Asger complained, blocking his ears to muffle the sound. The loud noise was grating on his sensitive senses, making the half-dragon more irritable than he needed to be.
"Well, these sirens are unnecessarily loud. Should I do something about it? I can use magic to quiet them down and—"
Victor paused mid-sentence, his usually carefree demeanor vanishing in an instant. His sharp eyes scanned the surroundings as a sudden sense of impending doom washed over him.
"Wait! The structure—it’s destabilizing. An explosion is imminent. This entire place is going to come down."
He muttered, raising a hand to silence Bianca and Asger. His tone carried an urgency that immediately silenced any further complaints from Asger.
Bianca’s eyes widened as she felt the faint tremors beneath her feet. The magic surrounding the temple was fluctuating violently, as if a massive force was about to be unleashed.
"Victor?" Bianca asked cautiously.
"We don’t have time. I’m going to use large-scale magic to get everyone out. That includes every single person inside this temple—magicians, civilians, everyone"
Victor declared, his voice steady despite the chaos around him.
He was not someone who usually cared for others, but this time was an emergency since too many lives were involed.
